The Collect.

ALMIGHTY God, whom

children, toffed to and fro, truly to know is everlasting

and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the fleight of men, and cunning craftinefs, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but, fpeaking the truth, in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Chrift: from whom the whole body fitly joined together, and compacted by that which every joint fupplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itfelf in love.

The Gofpel. John xv. 1. AM the true vine, and my Father is the hufbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you, As the branch cannot bear fruit of itfelf, except it abide in the vine, no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the fame bringeth forth much fruit for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is caft forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and caft them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye thall afk what ye will, and it thall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; fo thall ye be my difciples. As the Father hath foved me, fo have I loved you continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye ihall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his

lite; Grant us perfectly to know thy Son Jefus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life; that following the fteps of thy holy Apoftles, Saint Philip and Saint James, we may fedfafily walk in the way that leadeth to eternal life, through the fame thy Son Jefus Chrift our Lord. Amen.

The Epiftle. James i. 1. AMES, a fervant of God and of the Lord Jefus Chrift, to the twelve tribes which are fcattered abroad, greeting. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 'knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wifdom, let him afk of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it thall be given him. But let him afk in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth, is like a wave of the fea driven with the wind and toffed. For let not that man think that he thall receive any thing of the Lord. A double-minded man is unfiable in all his ways. Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: but the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grafs he thall pafs away. For the fun is no fooner riten with a burning heat, but it withereth the gra's, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fathion of it perithe h: to alfo thall the rich man fade away in his ways. .Bieffed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he fhall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promifed to them that love him,

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be alfo. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas. faith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goeft; and how can we know the way? Jefus faith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me. If ye had known me, ye fhould have known my Father alfo: and from henceforth ye know him, and have feen him. Philip faith unto him, Lord, thew us the Father, and it fufe ficeth us. Jefus faith unto him, Have I been fo long time with you, and yet haft thou not known me, Philip? He that hath feen me hath feen the Father; and how fayeft thou then, Shew us

The words that Ifpeak unto you 1 fpeak not of myself: but the Father, that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or elfe believe me for the very works' fake. Verily, verily, Ifay unto you, He that believeth on mc, the works that I do fhall he do alfo; and greater works

The Gofpel. John xv. 12.

That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends,

HIS is my commandment,

ye do whatfoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not fervants; for the fervant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Ye have not chofen me, but I have chofen you, and ordained

For the Epistle. iaiah xl. 1. OMFORT ye, comfort ye my people, faith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerufalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for the hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her fins. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the defert a highway for our God. Every valley thall be exalted, and every mountain and hill thall be made low and the crooked thall be made ftraight, and the rough places plain: and the glory of the Lord thall be revealed, and all fleth fall fee it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath fpoken ít. The voice faid, Cry. And he faid, What shall I cry? All fleth is grafs, and all the goodlinefs thereof is as the flower of the field: the grafs withereth, the flower fadeth: because the Spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: furely the people is grafs. The grafs withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God thall ftand for ever. O Zion, that bringeft good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerufalem, that bringeft good tidings, lift up thy voice with ftrength: lift it up, be not afraid;

fay unto the cities of Judah, Be-
hold your God! Behold, the Lord
God will come with strong hand,
and his arm thall rule for him:
behold, his reward is with him,
and his work before him. He
fhall feed his flock like a thep-
herd; he thall gather the lambs
with his arm, and carry them in
his bofom, and fall gently lead
thofe that are with young.

and the brought forth a fon. And her neighbours and her coufins heard how the Lord had thewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her. And it came to país, that on the eighth day they came to circumcife the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother anfwered and faid, Not fo; but he fhall be called John. And they faid unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. And they made figns to his father, how he would have him called. And he afked for a writing-table, and wrote, faying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loofed, and he fpake, and prailed God. And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all thefe fayings were noifed abroad throughout all the hillcountry of Judea: and all they that heard them, laid them up in their hearts, faying, What manner of child fhall this be? And the hand of the Lord was with him. And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghoff, and prophefied, faying, Bleffed be the Lord God of Ifrael; for he hath vifited and redeemed his people, and hath raifed up an horn of falvation for us in the houfe of his fervant David; as he fpake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been ince the world began: that we thould be faved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; to perform the mercy promiled to our fathers,

and to remember his holy covenant, the oath which he fware to our father Abraham, that he would grant unto us, that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might ferve him without fear, in holinefs and righteoufnefs before him, all the days of our life. And thou, Child, thalt be called the Prophet of the Higheft: for thou fhalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; to give knowledge of falvation unto his people, by the remiflion of their fins, through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the Day-fpring from on high hath visited us, to give light to them that fit in darkness and in the fhadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. And the child grew, and waxed ftrong in spirit, and was in the deferts till the day of his thewing unto Ifrael.
