Mr.

HE encouragement which your valuable and impartial Mifcellany attords

however

hope that you will devote the corner of a page to the infertion of the following attempt at an infcription for the monument to be erected to the memory of its illuftrious fubject. But one infcription can be chofen; but, before the choice is fixed, every one is at liberty to produce his efforts. Under that confideration I produce mine, but with a very faint hope of their acceptance. NEOS.

"To him,

to that man,

who, after having ferved his country in various climes,
died at laft in the arms of Victory, in a far distant land;
to Lieutenant-general Sir RALPH ABERCROMBY, K. B.
who, after two haraffing campaigns in Holland, ́
and one spent in the capture of various Colonies,
belonging to the enemies of his country, in the West-Indies;
was called upon to lead a large and
well-appointed army

to victory, in the fertile but unhealthy plains of Egypt;
where, in the field of battle,

and at the commencement of the engagement,
before the gates of Alexandria,

he received a mortal wound on the 21ft March, 1801;
which he concealed, till he faw the battle his own,
and the enemy completely defeated; ̧

and then, after lingering fome days,

expired amidst the tears and regret of a victorious arnıy.
To fuch a man,

a grateful country and a generous king
have erected this monument;
as a testimony

of their admiration of his many and great virtues,
and in order to perpetuate to posterity,
as far as marble can,

the memory of so great a man.
Obiit 28 Mar. 1801, 41 Geo. III.

Anno ætatis 68.

His afhes lie interred at Malta, but his fame is embalmed for the admiration of future ages, and his memory deeply graven on the bofom of his difconfolate country.

In him were combined the heroifm of the foldier, and experience of the fage, the bravery of the warrior, and the humanity of the mau.

Reader, this marble is not the tablet of flattery. To flatter the dead would be mockery. But to characterise the man, to diftinguish the hero, is the office of his monumental inscription.

P. 798, b. Perleganda fhould be perlegenda; and after majeftati add ab, as in p. 620. P. 1004, a. for "Doctrines," read "Doctrine;" for "Matthew xxv. 30" read 36;"Matth. xxi. 15." read 15, 16," "Dan. xii." read "xii."
