PRINTED AT THE BAPTIST MISSION PRESS, CIRCULAR ROAD. SOLD BY THE AUTHOR, CHINSURAH ; AND AT THE DEPOSITORY OF THE BENGAL CHRISTIAN TRACT AND SCHOOL-BOOK SOCIETY, CALCUTTA. Price 5 Rs. in boards.-Proceeds devoted to an edition of the work in the Bengake language. ADVERTISEMENT. It may be proper to inform the reader, that this little work was composed, without the remotest idea of its being presented to public notice in English. The author's intention was merely to prepare a small tract on the subject to which it relates,in Bengalee. Having, however, with a view of facilitating its progress, first written it in the former language, and also extended it beyond his original design, it was suggested to him by several esteemed friends, that it might be rendered more extensively useful by being first published in its present form. It owes its appearance, therefore, solely to the advice of those friends, for whose judgment he entertains the highest respect, and against which it would be arrogance in him to oppose his humble opinion. He is conscious that a seven years' residence in India, during which he has been in the habit of speaking and studying Bengalee more than English, will have occasioned numerous errors of composition, for which his work will need apology; but if it may prove at all useful in its ephemeral passage to oblivion, his great object will be obtained. With this view, and with the design of deriving from it some pecuniary assistance towards the publication of an edition in Bengalee, he now commends it to the Divine blessing, and to the candour of the Christian public.
