Promises to repentance. righteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Is. 57. 15. For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

Is. 66. 2. To this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

Jer, 3, 22. Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings.

Hos. 6. 1. Come, and let us return unto the Lord: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he bath smitten, and he will bind us up. After two days will he revive us : in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. Then shall we know if we follow on to know the Lord : his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Joel 2. 12. Therefore also now, saith the Lord, Turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord

your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth bim of the evil.

Dan. 9. 20. And while I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin, and the sin of my people—the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.

Lk. 15. 21. Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him.

False repentance.-Reproof unwelcome. just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

567. Is there a spurious kind of repentance ?

Mat. 27. 3. Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himsell, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? See thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

2 Cor. 7. 10. Godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Reproof.

563. Are persons commonly pleased to receive faithful reproof for their faults ?

Pr. 1. 25. Ye have set at naught all my counsel, and would none of my reproof.

Pr. 133. 1. A scorner heareth not rebuke.

Pr. 15. 10. Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die. 12. A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.

Am. 5. 10. They hate him that rebuketh in the gate.

Lk 3. 19. But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

Jn. 7.7. The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it; that the works thereof are evil.

559. Ought we fai'hfully to reprove and rebuke the errors and vices of others, und kindly tell them their faults, though it give offence ?

Lev. 19. 17. Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thy heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbor, and not suffer sin upon him.

Ps. 141. 5. Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head.

Pr. 19. 25. Reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

Pr. 24. 24. He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him: Bui to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon him.

Pr. 25. 12. As an ear.ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient

ear.

Pr. 28. 4. They that forsake the law praise the wicked; but such as keep the law contend with them. 23. He that rebuketh a man, afterwards shall find more favor than he that flattereth with the tongue.

Is. 58. 1. Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

Ezk. 16. 1. Again the word of the Lord came untə me, saying, Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations.

1 K. 18. 16. And Ahab went to meet Elijah. And it came to pass when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, art thou he that troubleth Israel? And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord.

1 K. 20. 21. And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee: because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord. Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy posterity And I will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Abijah, for the provocation where with thou hast provoked me to anger, and made Israel to sin. 571. Ought those who tell others their faults, and reprove them, first to correct their own fuulis ?

Mat. 7. 3. Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
