53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily I say unto

you, Except ye eat the Acth of the Son of man, and 54 drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth

my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hatheternal life, 55 and I will raise him up at the last day. For my feth 56 is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed (s). He

that eateth my Aesh, and drinketh my blood, dwel57 leth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath

fent me, and I live by the Father ; fo, he that eateth 58 me, even he shall live by me. . This is that bread

which came down from heaven: not as your fathers

did eat manna and are dead : he that eateth of this 59 bread, shall live for ever. These things said he in the 60 synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum. Many there

fore of his disciples, when they had heard this (t),

faid, This is an hard saying, who can hear it? 61 When Jesus knew in himself, that his disciples mur

mured at it, he laid unto them, Doth this offend you? 62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up

blessed Lord then takes occasion to assert his own superiority, invites thein 10 eat, not such temporary perishable food as manna, which their forefathers had in the wildernels, but the true living, that is, everlalling bread, from heaven; describing under that name, belief in him, and obedience to his doctrine, as being spiritual food and nourishment to the foul. And this is the meaning of this frong figure, which is continued through this whole discourse : but the conceptions of the Jews were too gross to understand it in its true fenre.

(s) Not literally and naturally, and yet verily and indeed, that is truly, and in fact, if taken in a spiritual sense. Observe, that though there is no reafon to inagine that this general way of speaks ing was intended by our Lord to be understood particularly of his la fupper, yet it may fairly be applied to that subject, and may ferve to explain iis frue and real meaning. Besides which, if the passage be underfood of both the body and blood of Christ, then is ihere a neceflity for communion in both kinds; viz. in Wine, as well as Bread.

things, Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry (a), because the Jews 2 fought to kill him. Now the Jews feast of tabernacles 3 was at hand. His brethren therefore said unto him(b),

Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also

(u) I am to ascend into heaven ; and when I am taken up from you, then surely you will be convinced that I cannot inean to offer you my fesh to eat in a literal sense.

(w) What I have said of giving myself for food, is to be taken spiritually, and in that sense alone can my flest be profitable to the Soul.

(*) Besides those of my common hearers, who have deserted me, one even of you, my chosen disciples, is a false traitor, and is doing the work of the devil.

felf feeketh to be known openly : If thou do thele 5 things, shew thyself to the world. For neither did his 6 brethren believe in him (dl). Then Jesus said unto

them, My time is not yet come : but your time is al7 way ready. The world cannot hate you ; but me it

hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof 8 are evil. Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet

unto this feast, for my time is not yet full come. 9

When he had said theie words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in 11 secret (e). Then the Jews fought him at the feast, 12 and said, Where is he? And there was much mur

muring among the people concerning him(f): for

fome said, He is a good man: others faid, Nay; but 13 he deceiveth the people. Howbeit, no man spake

openly of him (8), for fear of the Jews. 14

Now about the midst of the feast, Jesus went up 15 into the temple, and taught. And the Jews marvel

led, saying, How knoweth this man letters (h), having 16 never learned ? Jesus'answered them, and said, My 17

doctrine is not mine (i), but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doc

trine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of 18 iyself. He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own

angry at me, because I have made a man every whit 24 whole on the sabbath-day (o)? Judge not according to 25 the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. Then

said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he whom 26 they seek to kill ? But lo, he speaketh boldly, and they

fay nothing unto him: do the rulers know indeed 27 that this is the very Chrift? Howbeit, we know this

man whence he is : but when Christ cometh, no man 28 knoweth whence he is (0). Then cried Jesus in the

temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and

ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, (k) You pretend to great respect for the fourth commandment, but

you have none for the fixth ; for you are contriving how to kill me who have committed no crime,

but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not (9). 29 But I know him, for I am from him, and he hath 30 sent me. Then they fought to take him : but no

man laid hands on him, because his hour (r) was not 31 yet come. And many of the people believed on him,

and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more mi32

racles than these which this man hath done! The Pharisees heard that the people murmured (s) such

things concerning him: and the Pharisees, and the 33 chief priests sent officers to take him. Then said

Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, 34 and then I go unto him that sent me. Ye shall feek

me, and shall not find me : and where I am, thither 35 ye cannot come.

Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find

him ? will he go unto the disperfed aniong the Gen36 tiles, and teach the Gentiles? What manner of fay

ing is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall

not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come? 37

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst (t), let him come 38 unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the

scripture hath said (u), out of his belly shall Aow rivers 39 of (w) living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit,

which

come.

(9) True it is, that ye know me as to my birth and education ; but ye will not attend to the commission and authority I act by, and ye set yourselves against me, though I am come from God.
