Zach.7.5. He makes no account of any of our Alts of Piety, except we aim at his Glory in them. What an excellent frame of Spirit was there in holy David, who profeffeth, Pfal 16.8. 1 have fet the Lord alwaies before me. Did we bat keep this one common Principle warm upon our hearts, that God fees; how would it keep us fin cere and upright? How would it deter us from beart fins, and the clofeft hypocrifie, and from warping into any finful practile? This was that which kept fofeph fo upright, Gen.39.9. How can I do this great wickedneffe, and fin agains God? Ask thy felf therefore often this question, Will this be pleafing to God that I am now going 4bout? If credit or shame will reftrain thee from fin, how much more fhould Gods eie? Nothing more feeds, maintains, and preferves Piety, than a conftant awe of God. David gives the reason the wicked are fo bad, They have not fet God before them, Pfal.86.14. Abraham was afraid of himself in Gerar Gen.2c.11. And what was the reafon? why faies he, the fear of God is not in this place. Men durft as well run their heads into a hot flaming Oven, as fin against God, fo impudently as they do, if they thought he faw them, and would call them to an account,

The fear of God is a Grace of continual use; If that be not before our eies, we are exceeding apt to grow careleffe and fecure. We cannot be alwaies praying unto God, nor praising of him,

nor

nor worshipping of him, nor emploied in Acts of Special communion with him. Yet we ought to be alwaies in his fear, and to remember, that we' are alwaies under his eie. Be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long; 'tis Solomons advice, Prev.23.17. Right thoughts of God are the fewel that maintaines the life of Religion, which otherwife would be foon extinguished. Remember therefore Gods Omniprefence, and that will make thee upright, and careful to approve thy heart unto him. Sincerity, 'tis the life of all our Graces, and puts life into all our duties. Faith unfeigned, Love without diffimulation, a plain Spirit in which there is no guile, these are Gods delight.

The clearer therefore thou ftandeft in thy own thoughts, concerning the uprightneß of thy heart, in the tenure of thy Chriftian course, incomparably the more joy and comfort thou wilt have. Let integrity and uprightneß preferve me, was Davids praier, Pfal.25.21. Keep thy inte grity; and thy integrity will keep thee: A good man, next to his care that he give not God any occafion against him, will take care that he give not his Confcience any occafion against him. Be afraid therefore of giving thy Confcience any juft occafion to reproach, and rebuke thee; Confciexce, 'tis Gods Magiftrate within, that is appointed to be a terrour not to good works, but to the evil. Wouldst thou then not be afraid of this power?

power? do that which is good, and thou (balt have praife of the fame; to allude to that in Rems.13. O! it is exceeding fweet, (no man knowes how fweet but he that has it) to have the teftimony of a good Confcience, upon good grounds. A good Confcience, 'tis the best pillow to fleep upon, the best dish to feed upon; a dish faid I? nay, tis afeaft, a continual feaft, Prov 15.15.
