LUKE XXIII. 34–41.

for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; Matt. v. 44.

VER. 35.

Καὶ εἱστήκει ὁ λαὸς θεωρῶν. Ἐξεμυκτήρίζον δὲ καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες σὺν αὐτοῖς, λέγον τες· Αλλους ἔσωσε, σωσάτω ἑαυτὸν, εἰ οὖ τός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστὸς ὁ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐκλεκτός.

And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him suve himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.

[And sitting down, they watched him there; And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the Chief Priests mocking him, with the Scribes and elders, said, He saved others, himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God, Matt. xxvii. 36. 39-43. And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ab, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, Save thyself, and come down from the cross. Likewise also the Chief Priests, mocking, said among themselves with the Scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save. Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe, And they that were crucified with him reviled him, Mark xv. 29-32.]

VER. 36.

Ἐνέπαιζον δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται, προσερχόμενοι, καὶ ὄξος προσφέροντες | αὐτῷ,

And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, [They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall, Matt. xxvii. 34. And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh, Mark xv. 23. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar and they filled a spungė

*Ην δὲ καὶ ἐπιγραφὴ γεγραμμένη ἐπ' αὐτ τῷ γράμμασιν Ἑλληνικοῖς καὶ 'Ρωμαϊκοῖς καὶ ̔Εβραϊκοῖς· ΟΥΤΟΣ ΕΣΤΙΝ Ο ΒΑΣΙ

ΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ.

And a superscription also was written and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, OF THE JEWS.

[And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS, Matt. xxvii. 37. And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS, Mark xv. 26. Εἷς δὲ τῶν κρεμασθέντων κακούργων iBλacphμei avrov, Néyor. El où et i Χριστὸς, σῶσον σεαυτὸν καὶ ἡμᾶς.

And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

[The thieves also which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth, Matt. xxvii. 44. And they that were crucified with him reviled him, Mark xv. 32.]

VER, 40.

̓Αποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἕτερος ἐπετίμα αὐτῷ, λέγων· Οὐδὲ φοβῇ σὲ τὸν Θεὸν, ὅτι ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ κρίματι εἶ ;

But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

Καὶ ἔλεγε τῷ Ἰησοῦ· Μνήσθητί μου, Κύριε, ὅταν ἔλθῃς ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου.

And he said unto Jesus, a Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

VER. 43.

Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ̓Αμὴν λέγω σοι, σήμερον μετ ̓ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ παραδείσω.

And Jesus said unto him, a Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be b with me in paradise.

bI will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also, John xiv. 3. Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me : for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world, xvii. 24. We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord, 2 Cor. v. 8. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better, Phil. i. 23.

How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter, 2 Cor. xii. 4. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God, Rev. ii. 7.

VER. 44.

"Ην δὲ ὡσεὶ ὥρα ἕκτη, καὶ σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ' ὅλην τὴν γῆν, ἕως ὥρας ἐννάτης.

And it was about the sixth hour, und there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

[Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour, Matt. xxvii. 45. And when the sixth hour was come, there

VER. 45.

Καὶ ἐσκοτίσθη ὁ ἥλιος, καὶ ἐσχίσθη τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ μέσον.

a And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

[And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom ; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent, Matt. xxvii. 51. And the veil of the temple was rent Mark xv. 38.] in twain from the top to the bottom,

VER. 46.

Καὶ φωνήσας φωνῇ μεγάλη ὁ Ἰησοῦς, εἶπε· Πάτερ, εἰς χεῖράς σου παραθήσομαι τὸ πνεῦμά μου. Καὶ ταῦτα εἰπὼν ἐξέπνευ

σεν.

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit; and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

[And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama, sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost, Matt. xxvii. 46. 50. And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost, Mark xv. 34. 37. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, be said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost, John xix. 30.]

VER. 47.

Ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ ἐκατόνταρχος τὸ γενόμενον, ἐδόξασε τὸν Θεὸν, λέγων· Οντως ὁ ἄνθρω Koç obrog dínasos Av.

Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.

[Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly.

saying, Truly, this was the Son of God,

VER. 48.

Καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαραγενόμενοι όχλοι ἐπὶ τὴν θεωρίαν ταύτην, θεωροῦντες τὰ γενόμενα, τύπτοντες ἑαυτῶν τὰ στήθη ὑπέστρεφον.

And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.

VER. 49.

Εἱστήκεισαν δὲ πάντες οἱ γνωστοὶ αὐτοῦ μακρόθεν, καὶ γυναῖκες αἱ συνακολουθήσασαι αὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὁρῶσαι

ταῦτα.

And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things. a See on ver. 27.

VER. 50.

Καὶ ἰδοὺ, ἀνὴρ ὀνόματι Ἰωσήφ, βουλουτὴς ὑπάρχων, ἀνὴς ἀγαθὸς καὶ δίκαιος. And behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:

(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them ;) he was of Arimathea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for a the kingdom of God.

[When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple, Matt. xxvii. 57. Joseph of Arimathea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, Mark xv. 43. And after this, Joseph of Arimathea (being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews), John xix. 38.]

VER. 52.

Οὗτος, προσελθὼν τῷ Πιλάτῳ, ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.

*And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man

before was laid.

[And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out of the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed, Matt. xxvii. 59, 60. And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was

hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre, Mark xv. 46. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And there came also Nicodemus, (which at the first came to Jesus by night,) and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. CHAP. XXIV.VER. 1. Τη δὲ μιᾷ τῶν σαββάτων, ὄρθρου βα θέος, ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὸ μνῆμα, φέρουσαι ο ήτοι μασαν ἀρώματα, καί τινες σὺν αὐταῖς.

Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

VER. 2.

A. D. 33. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

VER. 4.

Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ διαπορεῖσθαι αὐτὰς περὶ τούτου, καὶ ἰδοὺ, δύο ἄνδρες ἐπέστη σαν αὐταῖς ἐν ἐσθήσεσιν ἀστραπτούσαις.

And it came to pass, as they were much perplered thereabout, behold, tu0 men stood by them in shining garments :

VER. 5.

Εμφόβων δὲ γενομένων αὐτῶν, καὶ κλι νουσῶν τὸ πρόσωπον εἰς τὴν γῆν, εἶπον πρὸς αὐτάς· Τί ζητεῖτε τὸν ζῶντα μετὰ τῶν νεκρῶν ;

And, as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

VER. 6.

Οὐχ ἔστιν ὧδε, ἀλλ ̓ ἀγέρθη. Μνήσθητε ὡς ἐλάλησεν ὑμῖν, ἔτι ὧν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαία, He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

VER. 7.

Λέγων· Οτι δεῖ τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδοθῆναι εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων ἁμαρτω λῶν, καὶ σταυρωθῆναι· καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρα ἀναστῆναι.

a Saying, the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

a And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of Εὗρον δὲ τὸν λίθον ἀποκεκυλισμένον ἀπό men: And they shall kill him, and του μνημείου,

[And, behold, there was a great earthquake for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, Matt. xxviii. 2. And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great, Mark xvi. 4. And seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre, John xx. 1.]

the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry, Matt. xvii. 22, 23..

VER. 8.

Καὶ ἐμνήσθησαν τῶν ῥημάτων αὐτοῦ.
And they remembered his words,

VER. 9.

Καὶ ὑποστρέψασαι ἀπὸ τοῦ μνημείου, ἀπήγγειλαν ταῦτα πάντα τοῖς ἕνδεκα· καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς λοιποῖς.

And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and

Καὶ εἰσελθοῦσαι οὐχ εὗρον τὸ σῶμα τοῦ to all the rest. Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ.

Ησαν δὲ ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ Μαρία, καὶ Ἰωάννα, καὶ Μαρία Ιακώβου, καὶ αἱ λοιπαὶ σὺν αὐταῖς, αἳ ἔλεγον πρὸς τοὺς ἀποστόλους ταῦτα.

It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. VER. 11.

Καὶ ἐφάνησαν ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν ὡσει λῆρος τὰ ῥήματα αὐτῶν, καὶ ἡπίστουν αὐταῖς.

And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.

[And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not, Mark xvi. 11.]

VER. 12.

Ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἀναστὰς ἔδραμεν ἐπὶ τὸ μνημεῖον· καὶ παρακύψας βλέπει τὰ ὀθόγια κείμενα μόνα καὶ ἀπῆλθε, πρὸς ἑαυ τὸν θαυμάζων τὸ γεγονός.

Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre ; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

VER. 13.

Καὶ ἰδοὺ, δύο ἐξ αὐτῶν ἦσαν πορευόμενοι ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ εἰς κώμην ἀπέχουσαν σταδίους ἑξήκοντα ἀπὸ Ἱερουσαλὴμ, ή όνομα Εμμαούς.

And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

VER. 14.

Καὶ αὐτοὶ ὡμίλων πρὸς ἀλλήλους περί πάντων τῶν συμβεβηκότων τούτων.

And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

And how the Chief Priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

a And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the Chief Priests and the Scribes came together,

Οἱ δὲ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτῶν ἐκρατοῦντο τοῦ and led him into their council, sayμὴ ἐπιγνῶναι αὐτόν.
