IV. There be only two facraments ordained by Christ our Lord in the gospel, that is to fay, baptifm and the supper of the Lord: neither of which may be difpenfed by any but by a minister of the word lawfully ordained k.

V. The facraments of the Old Teftament, in regard of. the spiritual things thereby fignified and exhibited, were, for fubftance, the fame with thofe of the New .

CHAP. XXVIII. Of Baptifm.

APTISM is a facrament of the New Teftament, ordained by Jefus Chrift a, not only for the folemn admiffion of and of the Son, and of the holy Ghoft. 1 Cor. xi. 20. When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's fupper. v. 23. For I have received of the Lord, that which alfo I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jefus, the fame night in which he was betrayed, took bread. 1 Cor. iv. 1. Let a man fo account of us, as of the minifters of Chrift, and stewards of the myfteries of God. Heb. v. 4. And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

whereunto, even baptifm, doth alfo now fave us, (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the antwer of a good confcience towards God) by the refurrection of Jefus Chrift.

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance; but he that cometh after me, is mightier than I, whofe fhoes I am not worthy to bear: he fhall baptize you with the holy Ghost, and with fire. 1 Cor. xii. 13. V. Although it be a great fin to contemn or neglect this ordinancen, yet grace and falvation are not fo infeparably annexed unto it, as that no perfon can be regenerated or faved without ito, or that all that are baptized are undoubtedly regenerated p.

VI. The efficacy of baptifm is not tied to that moment of time wherein it is adminiftredq; yet notwithstanding, by the right ufe of this ordinance, the grace promised is not only offered, but really exhibited and conferred by the holy Ghoit, to fuch (whether of age or infants) as that grace belongeth

that believe, though they be not circumcifed; that righteoufneis might be imputed unto them alfo: v. 12. and the father of circumcifion to them, who are not of the circumcifion only, but alfo walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcifed. 1 Cor. vii. 14. For the unbelieving husband is fanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is fanctified by the hufband: elfe were your children unclean: but now they are holy. Mat. xxviii. 19. UR Lord Jefus, in the night wherein he was betrayed, instituted the facrament of his body and blood, called the Lord's Supper, to be observed in his church unto the end of the world, for the perpetual remembrance of the sacrifice of himself in his death, the fealing all benefits thereof unto true believers, their spiritual nourishment and growth in him, their farther engagement in and to all duties which they owe unto him: and to be a bond and pledge of their communion with him, and with each other, as members of his mystical body a.
