The dream of Pharaoh is one: God hath shewed Pharaoh what 26 he is about to do. The seven good kine are seven years; and the 27 seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one. And the seven thin and ill-favoured kine that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall 28 be seven years of famine. This is the thing which I have spoken unto Pharaoh: What God is about to do he sheweth unto Pharaoh. 29 Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the 30 land of Egypt: And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt;

25 God hath shewed Pharaoh, &c.] See verse 16 and com. I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth. Ex. ix. 14. And the Lord said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them for to-morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel; thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire. Jos. xi. 6. The Lord hath made known his salvation, his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen. Ps. xcviii. 2. Let " them" ("the idols") bring them forth, and shew us what shall happen: let them shew the former things what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them, or declare us things for to come. Shew the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods; yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together. Is. xli. 22, 23. Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this and shew us former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified, or let them hear, and say, It is truth. Is. xliii. 9. There is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets; and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to "thee" ("Nebuchadnezzar") what shall come to pass. Forasmuch as thou sawest (said Daniel) that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces, the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter. Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him. Da. ii. 28. 34. 45, 46. Surely the Lord God will do nothing but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. Am. iii. 7. Then shall two be in the field: the one shall be taken, and the other left. Mat. xxiv. 40. But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things. Mar. xiii. 23. I cease not to make mention of you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation

in the knowledge of him. Ep. i. 16, 17. After this "I" ("John") looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was as it were a trumpet talking with me, which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. Re. iv. 1.

Ex. xii. 11. 15. And (our fathers) did all drink the same spiritual drink, for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 1 Co. x. 4.

(as a punishment for numbering Israel). 2 Sa. xxiv. 13. Then spake Elisha unto the woman (the Shunammite) whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine houshold, and sojourn wheresoever thou canst sojourn, for the Lord hath called for a famine, and it shall also come upon the land seven years. 2 Ki. viii. 1.

30 Seven years of famine.] See verses 27. 54. and com. And Elijah the Tishbite said unto Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be de*, nor rain, these years, but according to my word. 1 Ki. xvii. I. But I tell you of s truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout the land. Lu. iv. 25. Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. Ja. v. 17.

and the famine shall consume the land; And the plenty shall not 31 be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very grievous. And for that the dream was doubled unto 32 Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. out a man discreet and wise, and

Shall be forgotten.] See verse 21. And the name of the second (of his sons) called he Ephraim for God hath caused me (Joseph) to be fruitful in the land of my affliction. Ge. xli. 52. Let him drink (that is ready to perish), and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more. Pr. xxxi. 7. He who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes. Is. lxv. 16. Consume the land.] And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine. Ge. xlvii. 13. Moreover, he called for a famine on the land, he brake the whole staff of bread. Ps. cv. 16.

31 Grievous, &c.] The hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod (for having brought the ark of God into the house of Dagon), and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods. 1 Sa. v. 6. The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard; and shall be removed like a cottage, and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again. Is. xxiv. 20.

32 Doubled unto Pharaoh.] Behold (said Joseph to his brethren), we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose (in my dream), and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon, and the eleven stars, made obeisance to me. Ge. xxxvii. 7. 9. God speaketh once, yea, twice, yet man perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed. Job xxxiii. 14, 15. This is the third time I am coming to you; in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established. 2 Co. xiii. 1.

It is because the thing is established, &c.] God is not a man that he should lie, neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Nu. xxiii. 19. The Lord of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand. The Lord of hosts hath purposed upon the whole earth, and this is the

hand that is stretched out, and who shall turn it back? Is. xiv. 24. 26, 27. I am God, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass: I have purposed it, I will also do it. Is. xlvi. 10, 11. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Mat. xxiv. 35.

Established, &c.] Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it. Is. xxx. 33. Then shall the king say to them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. Mat. xxv. 34. 41. But to sit on my right hand, and on my left hand, is not mine (Christ's) to give but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared. Mar. x. 40. It is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 1 Co. ii. 9. And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of man. Re. ix. 15.

33 Therefore let Pharaoh look out a man, &c.] O king (said Daniel to Nebuchadnezzar), let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor: if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity. Da. iv. 27. Hearken now unto my voice (said Jethro to Moses) I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over "them" ("the people of Israel"), to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens and let them judge the people at all seasons and it shall be that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge; so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee. Ex. xviii. 19. 21, 22. Take you wise men, and understanding, and

34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plen35 teous years. And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let 36 them keep food in the cities. And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine. 37 And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes

known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you. De. i. 13. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost, and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business (in ministering to the poor widows). Ac. vi. 3.

34 Officers over the land.] And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle. Nu. xxxi. 14. And the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple, along by the altar and the temple; and he brought forth the king's son (Jehoash), and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him, and clapped their hands, and said, God save the king. 2 Ki. xi. 11, 12. And the men did the work (the repairs of the temple) faithfully, and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of music. 2 Ch. xxxiv. 12. And Joel the son of Zichri was their overseer (of those who dwelt at Jerusalem): and Judah the son of Senuah was second over the city. Ne. xi. 9.

And take up the fifth, &c.] In famine he shall redeem thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword. Job v. 20. The eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Ps. xxxiii. 19. Give not sleep to thine eyes nor slumber to thine eyelids. Go to the ant thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Pr. vi. 4. 6. A prudent man foreseeth evil, and hideth himself. Pr. xxii. 3. and xxvii. 12. 35 Gather all the food.] And he (Joseph) gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities; and Joseph gathered orn as the sand of the sea; and when all the

f Egypt was famished, the people cried

to Pharaoh for bread. And the famine was over all the face of the earth; and Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians, and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt. Ge xli. 48, 49. 56. For these two years (said Joseph to his brethren) hath the famine been in the land, and yet there are five years to the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. Ge. xlv. 6, 7.

Hand of Pharaoh.] And "he" (“ Moses”) said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee (to Pharaoh), by the hand of him whom thou wilt send. Ex. iv. 13.

36 See verse 30.

That the land, &c.] And there was no bread in all the land, for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine. And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread, for why should we die in thy presence? And Joseph said, Give your cattle, and I will give you for your cattle. And they brought their cattle unto Joseph. And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, only the land of the priests bought he not; and Joseph said unto the people, Here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land; and in the increase ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh. And they said, Thou hast saved our lives, let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants. Ge. xlvii. 13–25.

37 The thing.] Until the time that his word came the word of the Lord tried him. Ps. cv. 19. The tongue of the just is es choice silver; the heart of the wicked is little worth. Pr. x. 20. A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. xxv. 11. But God delivered him (Joseph) out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house. Ac. vii. 10.

Good in the eyes of Pharaoh.] And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children

of all his servants. And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we 38 find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed 39 thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art: Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall 40 all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over 41

of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them. Jos. xxii. 30. And all the people took notice of it (how David lamented over Abner, killed by Joab), and it pleased them. 2 Sa. iii. 36. And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money. 1 Ki. xxi. 2.

38 In whom the Spirit of God is.] And the Lord said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua, the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay thine hand upon him. Nu. xxvii. 18. But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. Job xxxii. 8. Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream. But at the last Daniel came in before me, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; this dream (said the king) I Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee. Da. iv. 6. 8. 18. There is a man in thy kingdom (said the queen to Nebuchadnezzar), in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him. Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee. Da. v. 11. 13, 14. Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents (of whom Daniel was first) and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm. Da. vi. 3.

39 See verse 16. 25. 28. 33. 40 Shalt be over my house.] And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him, and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. And it came to pass, from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the

house and in the field. And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat: and Joseph was a goodly person, and well-favoured, &c. Ge. xxxix. 4, 5, 6. It was not you that sent me hither (said Joseph to his brethren), but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt. Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me, tarry not. And (Jacob's sons) told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. Ge. xlv. 8, 9. 26. He (Pharaoh) made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance; to bind his princes at his pleasure, and teach his senators wisdom. Ps. cv. 21, 22. Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men. Pr. xxii. 29. Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him. Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon. Da. ii. 46. 48. Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. Da. v. 29. Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him. Da. vi. 3.

Be ruled.] Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his (Saul's) head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance? 1 Sa. x. 1. My heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand. Job xxxi. 27. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. Ps. ii. 12.

41 See, I have set thee over, &c.] And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt. Ge. xli. 44. See verse 40. and com. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the

42 all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures 43 of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck; And he made

prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it. Ge. xxxix. 22. Mordecai the Jew was next unto king Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews, and accepted of the multitude of his brethren, seeking the wealth of his people, and speaking peace to all his seed. Es. x. 3. A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren. Pr. xvii. 2. Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings. Pr. xxii. 29. "They" ("the Chaldeans") answered again, and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it. The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me. Da. ii. 7, 8. I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me how great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation. Da. iv. 2, 3. Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm. Da. vi. 3. And Jesus came, and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Mat. xxviii. 18. Wherefore God also hath exalted him (Jesus), and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth: and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phi. ii. 9, 10, 11.

42 His ring, &c.] And the king (Ahasuerus) took his ring from his hand, and gave it unto Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews' enemy. And the king said unto Haman, The silver is given thee, and the people also, to do with them as it seemeth good to thee. Then there was written according to all that Haman had commanded, in the name of Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with the king's ring. Es. iii. 10, 11, 12. And Haman answered the king, For the man whom the king delighteth to honour, let the royal apparel be brought which the king useth to wear, and the horse that the king rideth upon, and the crown royal which is set upon his head. And let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble princes, that they may array the man withal whom the king deIlghteth to honour. Then the king said to Haman, Make haste and take the apparel and the horse, as thou hast said, and do even so to

Mordecai the Jew, that sitteth at the king's gate. Then took Haman the apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai. And Mordecai came again to the king's gate: but Haman hasted to his house mourning, and having his head covered. Es. vi. 7-12. And the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. Write ye also (said the king to Esther and to Mordecai) for the Jews, as it liketh you, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's ring. And he wrote in king Ahasuerus' name, and sealed it with the king's ring. And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a garment of fine linen and purple. Es. viii. 2. 8. 10. 15. Mordecai the Jew was next unto the king Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews, and accepted of the multitude of his brethren, seeking the wealth of his people, and speaking peace to all his seed. Fine linen.] Fine linen with broidered work from Egypt was that which thou spreadest forth to be thy sail (Tyrus); blue and purple from the isles of Elishah was that which covered thee. Ez. xxvii. 7.

A gold chain about his neck.] They (the instruction of thy father, and the law of thy mother) shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head (my son), and chains about thy neck. Pr. i. 9, 10. She (a virtuous woman) maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple: she maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Pr. xxxi. 22. 24. Thy (the Church's) cheeks are comely with rows of jewels, thy neck with chains of gold. Ca. i. 10. I clothed thee (Jerusalem) with broidered work, and shod thee with badgers' skin, and girded thee about with fine linen, and I covered thee with silk. I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck. Ez. xvi. 10, 11. See Da. v. 7. preced. com. I have heard of thee (said Belshazzar to Daniel), that thou canst make interpretations and dissolve doubts: now, if thou canst read the writing (on the wall), and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and kose a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom. Then commanded Belshazzar (when Daniel interpreted the writing), and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he
