days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee. And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, 20 that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants. And he restored the chief butler unto his bullership again; and he 21 gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand: But he hanged the chief baker: 22

thanks, he brake "it" ("the bread"), and said, Take, eat: this is my body which is broken for you. 1 Ca. xi. 24. 19 See verse 13.

Hang thee on a tree.] He (Pharaoh) hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted. Ge. xi. 22. And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us so it was; "me" (the " butler") he restored unto mine office, and him (Me baher) he hanged. Ge. xii. 13. If a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him upon a tree; bis body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in anywise bury him that day (for he that is hanged it accursed of God). De. xxi. 22, 23. The king of Ai "he" ("Joshua") hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, &c Jos. viii. 29. And afterward Joshua smote them (the five kings), and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening. Jos. x. 26. Let seven men of his (Saul's) sons be delivered unto us (said the Gibeoniles to David), and we will hang them up unto the Lord in Gibeah of Saul. 2 Sa. xxi. 6. The eye that mocketh at hit father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it. Pr. xxx. 17Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. Ga. iii. 13.

And the birds shall eat.] Seeversel*}. And the Philistine (Goliath) said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field. Then said David to the Philistine, This day will the Lord deliver thee into my hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee ; and 1 will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth. 1 Sa. xvii. 44. 46. And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah (whom she bare unto Saul) took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the aiv to rest on " them" (" the kindred of Saut' that were hanged in the hill, seeen in number) by day, nor the beasts of the field by night. 2 Sa. xxi. 10. "Thou" (" Gog," the chief prince of Meshcch and Tubal) shalt fall upon

the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. Ex. xxxix. 4. I have not shunned to declare unto you (said Paul to the elders of Ephesus) all the counsel of God. Ac xx. 27.

20 Birthday.] See verses 13. 19. And the child grew, and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned. Ge. xxi. 8. In the third year of his (Ahasuerus') reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants. Es. i. 3. After this (that Job was smitten of God) opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day. Job iii. 1. When Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. Mat. xiv. 6. And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee; the daughter of Herodias came in, and danced. Mar. vi. 21. 22.

Lifted up the head, &c] See verses 13. 19. and com. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his Lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. Mat. xviii. 23, 24, 25. After a long time the Lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. Mat. xxv. 19. There was a certain rich man, which had a steward ; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward. Lu. xvi. 1, 2.

21 Gave the cup, &c] See verse 13. And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence, &c .Ye. ii. 1.

22 He hanged, Sec] See verses 18, 19. We dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream. And it came to pass, as he (Joseph) interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto mine office, and him he banged. Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace. Ge. xli. 11. 13—16. The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream: and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What uthe chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord. Je. xxiii. 28. Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven; 1 thank thee and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers (said Daniel), who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee; for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter; but as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that 1 have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart. Da. ii. 19. 23. 30. Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation (said the queen to Belshazzar). Da. v. 12. I have not shunned to declare unto you (said Paul to the elders of Ephesus) all the counsel of God. Ac xx. 27.

1 Ann it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh

2 dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river. And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favoured kine and fatfleshed;

23 But forgat Ainu] My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. Job xix. 14. 1 am forgotten as a dead man out of mind; I am like a broken vessel. Ps. xxxi. 12. Until the time that his word came; the word of the Lord tried him. Ps. cv. 19. Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city ; yet no man remembered that poor man: then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. Ec ix. 15,1G. (The people of Israel) that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments; but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. Am. vi. 6.

Chap. XLI.—1 That Pharaoh dreamed.] See chap. xx. 3. and xl. 5. with its com. And he (Joseph) told it (his dream) to hit father,

and to his brethren: and his father rebuhed him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed ? Sec Ge. xxxvii. 10. They (the butler and baher of Pharaoh) dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream io one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison. Ge. xl.5. And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley-bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a teat, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along. And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian and all the hosts. Jm. vii. 13, 14.

The river.] So he (Jacob) fled with all that he had: and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the moeat Gilead. Ge. xxxi. 21. And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that U hers ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive. Ex. i. 22. And it shal come to pass, if they will not believe alao the*e two signs (Moses' rod being turned tar* a serpent, and his hand become leprous), neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shall take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou take* out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land. Ex. iv. 9. The land, whither that goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where the* sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with shy foot, as a garden of herbs. De. xi. 1ft. The waters shall fail from the sea (in thejud' aw uts of God against Jerusalem), and the river shall be wasted and dried up. Is. xix. 5. Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord God, Behold. 1 am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his riven, which hath said. My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself. And the land of Egypt shall be desolate and waste, snd they shall know that I am the Lord: because be hath said, The river is mine, and 1 have marTr it. £z. xxix. 3. 9.

2 There came up, &c] And Pharaoh nf unto Joseph, In my dream, behold. I staad upon the bank of the river. And (Joseph smut unto Pharaoh) the seven thin and ill favoured kine that came up after "them" (" the wellfavoured") are seven years. Ge. xli. 17- 27A meadow.] See verse 8.

and they fed in a meadow. And, behold, seven other kine came 3 up after them out of the river, ill favoured and leanileshed; and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river. And the ill 4 favoured and leanfleshed kine did eat up the seven well favoured and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke. And he slept and dreamed 5 the second time: and, behold, seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good. And, behold, seven thin ears and 6 blasted with the east wind sprung up after them. And the seven 7 thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream. And it came to pass in the 8 morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and

4 So Pharaoh awohe. ] And Solomon awoke; and. behold, it was a dream. 1 Ki. iii. 15.

5 Rank and pood.] Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of wheat, (he, the Lord) made him (Jacob) to suck. De. xxxii. 14.

6 Blasted with the east wind.] Yea, behold (this vine which bent its roots to the great eagle in the parable), being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? (as an emblem of God's judgments) it shall wither in the furrows where it grew. Ex. xvii. 10. But "she" (the "vine" representing Jerusalem in the parable) was plucked up in fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken, and withered; the fire consumed them. Ex. xix. 12. Though he (Ephraim) be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the Lord shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up. Ha. xiii. 15.

7 A dream.] See chap. xx. 3. and xxxvii. 5. and com.

8 Hit spirit was troubled.] And Joseph came in unto them (the butler and baher of Pharaoh) in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold, they were sad. Ge. xl. 6. Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from liim. And the king said unto them (the magicians, Sfc), 1 have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream. JJals. ii. 1, 2, 3. I saw a dream (said NebuchaAnezzar unto all the people, nations, and languages) which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed, and the visions of my head, troubled me. Da. iv. 1.5. Then Daniel ( when he heard the king's dream) was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him.

Da. iv. 19. The king's (BeUhazzar's) countenance was changed (when he saw the fingers of a man's hand, writing upon the plaster of the wall), and his thoughts troubled him, so that the loints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another. Da. v. 6. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled-me, and my countenance changed in me (at the vision of God's kingdom): but I kept the matter in my heart. Da. vii. 28. When I heard (of God's seeere judgments against Judah) my belly trembled, my lips quivered at the voice: rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble. Hab. iii. 16.

The magicians.] Then (when Moses' rod was turned into a serpent) Pharaoh also called the wise men, and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. Ex. vii. 11. And the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, neither did he hearken unto them; as the Lord had said. E*. vii. 22. And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt. Then (when the dust of the earth became lice at the word of Aaron) the magicians (when they could not bring forth lice) said unto Pharaoh, This M the finger of God. Ex. viii. 7. 18, 19. And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians. Ex. ix. 11. Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them. Le. xix. 51. The soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people. Le. xx. 6. When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God givcth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations; there shall not be found among you any one that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consultcr with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer; for all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God: for these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners. De. xviii. 9—14. And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? Is. viii. 19. And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards. Is. xix. 3. Behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, eeen a marvellous work and wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid. Is. xxix. 14. Stand now (O Babylon) with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail. Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the star-gazers, the rognosticators, stand up, and save these things that shall come upon Is. xlvii. 12, 13. In all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king (Nebuchadnezzar) enquired of them (Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah), he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his reaim. Da. i. 20. Then the king (being troubled with dreams) commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. Da. ii. 2. Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I (said Nebuchadnezzar) told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof Da, iv. 7The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me (Belshazzar) the interpretation thereof, shall he clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom. There is a man in thy kingdom (said the queen to Belshazzar), in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. Da. v. 7- 11* Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans and of the

Pharaoh told them his dreams; but there was none that could 9 interpret them unto Pharaoh. Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day: Pharaoh was 10 wroth with his servants, and put me in ward in the captain of the guard's house, both me and the chief baker: And we dreamed all dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream. And there was there with us a 12 young man, an Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret. And it came to pass, as 13 he interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto mine office, and him he hanged. Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and 14 they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh.

The wise men thereof.] When Jesus vu born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem. Mat. ii. 1. Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds. Ac vii. 22.

But there was none that could interpret, &c] We have dreamed a dream (said Pharash i butler and baher), and there is No interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do oat interpretations belong to God? Tell me them, I pray you. Ge. xl. 8. and com. He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise: he taketh the wise in their own craftiness, and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong. Job v. 12, 13. The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him, and he wiB shew them his covenant. Ps. xxv. 14. Sardy the princes of Zoan are fools, the counsel of the wise counsellors of Pharaoh is becoaae brutish: how say ye unto Pharaoh, I aw the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings? Where are they? where are thy wise memf and let them tell thee now, and let them know what the Lord of hosts hath upon Egypt. The princes of Zoan are 1 fools, the princes of Noph are deceived; the? have also seduced Egypt. The Lord hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst I and they have caused Egypt to . work thereof. Is. xix. 11—14. of their wise men shall perish, and the i standing of their prudent men shall be had. Is. xxix. 14. Then spake the ChaldeasM s» the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation. wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. 1 Ca. iii. 18, 19, 20.

9 / do remember my faults.] It came to pass, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his taker had offended their lord the king of Egypt; and he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound. Think on me (said Joseph to the butlert having interpreted his dream) when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, onto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house: yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him. Ge. xl. t. 3. 14. 23.

10 Was wroth.] His wrath was kindled. And Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound. Ge. xxxix. 20. And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers; and he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound. Ge. xl. 2, 3.

Captain of the guard's house.] The Midianites sold him (Joseph) into Egypt, unto Potiplmr, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard. Ge. xxxvii. 36.

11 Dreamed a dream.] See Ge. xl. 5. 8. and com.

He interpreted to us our dreams.] And Joseph said unto him (the butler), This is the interpretation of " it" (" of your dream"): The three branches are three days; yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place, and thou shnlt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand fitter the former manner when thou wast his butler. When the chief baker saw that the i nterpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream; and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head. And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days; .yen within three days shall Pharaoh lift up fjjy head from off thee, and shall hang thee VOL. I.

13 Me he restored.] See chap. xl. 12—22. and com. See, I have this day set thee (Jeremiah) over the nations, and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pulldown, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant. Je. i. 10. And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, eeen according to the vision which I saw when I came to destroy the city; and the visions were like the vision that I (Ezekiel) saw by the river Chebar: and I fell upon my face. Ez. xliii. 3.

14 Sent and called Joseph.] The Lord maketh poor and maketh rich; he bringeth low and lifteth up; he raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them. 1 Sa. ii. 7, 8. Until the time that his word came: the word of the Lord tried him. The king sent and loosed him (Joseph); eeen the ruler of the people, and let him go free. He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance: to bind his princes at his pleasure, and teach his senators wisdom. Ps. cv. 19— 22. He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill: that he may set him with princes, eeen with the princes of his people. Ps. cxiii. 7, 8.

And they brought him hastily, Sec] Then (when the locusts covered the land) Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste; and he said, I have sinned against the Lord your God, and against you. Ex. x. 16. See 1 So. ii. 8. preced. com. and Ps. cxiii. 7l 8. Then (when Daniel desired to be brought before the king) Arioch (whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon) brought in Daniel before the king (Nebuchadnezzar) in haste. Da. ii. 25.

He shaved himself.] And Mephibosheth, the son of Saul, came down to meet the king (David), and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day Y
