Judas then having received a band of men

and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees,

Cometh thither with lanterns, and torches, and

weapons.

Mat. And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came,

And with him a great multitude, with
swords and staves, from the chief priests
and elders of the people.

Mar. And immediately while he yet spake, cometh
Judas, one of the twelve,

And with him a great multitude, with
swords and staves, from the chief priests,
and the scribes, and the elders.

Luke And while he yet spake,

Behold a multitude,

Mat. Now he that betrayed him, gave them a sign,

saying,

Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he, hold him fast.

Mar. And he that betrayed him, had given them a token, saying,

Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he, take him, and lead him away safely.

Luke And he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them,

Luke And drew near unto Jesus,

To kiss him.

Mar. And as soon as he was come, he goeth straight-
way to him,

And saith, Master, master, and kissed him.
Mat. And forthwith he came to Jesus,
Mat.

And said, Hail, master; and kissed him. Mat. And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come ?

Luke But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

4 John Jesus therefore knowing all things that should
come upon him, went forth, and said unto them,
Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of
Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am be,
And Judas also which betrayed him, stood with
them. As soon then as he had said unto them,
I am be, they went backward, and fell to the
ground. Then asked he them again, Whom
seek ye? and they said, Jesus of Nazareth,
Jesus answered, I have told you that I am be,
If therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:
That the saying might be fulfilled which he
spake, Of them which thou gavest me, have
I lost none.

Mat. Then came they and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.

Mar. And they laid their hands on him, and took

him.

Luke When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

Mat. And behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword,

And struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.

Mar. And one of them that stood by drew a sword, And smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

LukeAnd one of them

Smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

18 10 John Then Simon Peter having a sword, drew it, And smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear.

John The servant's name was Malchus.

11 John Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath:

Mat. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place:

Mat. For all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?

John The cup which my Father hath given me, shall
I not drink it?

Luke And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far.
And he touched his ear, and healed him.
Luke Then Jesus said unto the chief priests and cap-
tains of the temple, and the elders which were
come to him,

Be ye come out as against a thief, with
swords and staves?

Mar. And Jesus answered and said unto them,
Are ye come out as against a thief, with
swords and with staves to take me?
Mat. In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes,
Are ye come out as against a thief, with
swords and staves for to take me?

Mat. I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, '
And ye laid no hold on me.
Mar. I was daily with you in the temple teaching,
And ye took me not.

Luke When I was daily with you in the temple,
Ye stretched forth no hands against me:

Luke But this is your hour, and the power of dark

ness.

Mar. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.

Mat. But all this was done, that the Scriptures of
the prophets might be fulfilled.

Mat. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
Mar. And they all forsook him, and fled.

Then

18 12/John Then the band, and the captain, and the officers 13 of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, And led him away to Annas first (for he was fatherin-law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.)

Mar. And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him. And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked. Mar. And they led Jesus away to the high priest: And with him were assembled all the chief priests, and the elders, and the scribes. Mat. And they that had laid hold on Jesus, led him away to Caiaphas the high priest,

Where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

Luke Then took they him, and led bim, and brought
him into the high priest's house.

14 John Now Caiaphas was he which gave counsel to
the Jews, that it was expedient that one man
should die for the people. (John xi. 50.)
Sect. 136. Peter denies his Master.

Mat. But Peter followed him afar off, unto the high
priest's palace.

Mar. And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest.

Luke And Peter followed afar off.

15 John And Simon Peter followed Jesus,

—John And so did another disciple. That disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

Luke And when they had kindled a fire in the midst
of the hall, and were set down together,
Luke Peter sat down among them.

Mar. And he sat with the servants, and warmed
himself at the fire. See John, verse 18.
Mat. And went in and sat with the servants to see
the end.

N. B. Here Matthew and Mark bring in the history of our Lord's trial as the principal fact. (See at Luke xxii. 66. p. 290.) Then they relate Peter's denials as follows:

Peter's first denial.

Mat. Now Peter sat without in the palace; and a damsel came unto him,

Saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.

Mar. And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest, And when she saw Peter warming himself,

She looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.

But

And earnestly looked upon him, and said,
This man was also with him.

18 17 John Then saith the damsel that kept the door un-
to Peter,

Art not thou also one of this man's disci ples?

+

Luke But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire,

18 John And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals (for it was cold), and they warmed themselves; and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. See Luke, ver.55. -Peter's second denial.

26

John He saith, i am not.

Mat. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.

27

Mar. But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest.

Luke And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know

him not.

Mar. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.

And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by,

This is one of them.

Mat. And when he was gone out into the porch,
Another maid saw him, and said unto them
that were there,

This fellow was also with Jesus of
Nazareth.

Mat. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.

Peter's third denial.

18 25 John And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself: They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not. One of the servants of the high priest (being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off) saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? Peter then denied again, and immediately the cock crew.

Mar. And he denied it again.

LukeAnd after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.

N. B. John having related the first denial, which happened immediately after Peter entered the hall, ver. 17, 18. he gives the history of our Lord's trial as the principal fart (see at Luke xxii. 66. p. 290.); then brings in the third denial as follows.

1

Luke And about the space of one hour after,
Another confidently affirmed, saying,
Mar. And a little after,

!

They that stood by said again to Peter, Mat. And after a while came unto him

Luke Of a truth this fellow also was with him ;
For he is a Galilean.

Mar. Surely thou art one of them;

Mat. Surely thou also art one of them,
For thy speech bewrayeth thee.

Mat. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying,
I know not the man.

For thou art a Galilean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.

And immediately the cock crew.
Mar. But he began to curse and to swear, saying,
I know not this man of whom ye speak.
And the second time the cock crew.
Luke And Peter said,

Man, I know not what thou sayest.
And immediately while he yet spake,
the cock crew.

Luke And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter; Luke And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him,

Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

Mar. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him,

Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

Mat. And Peter remembered the words of Jesus, which said unto him,

Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny
me thrice.

Mat. And he went out and wept bitterly.
Mar. And (Xay) when he thought thereon, he

wept.

Luke And Peter went ouf, and wept bitterly.
Luke
And the men that held Jesus, mocked him,
and smote him. And when they had blind-
folded him, they struck him on the face, and
asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that
smote thee? And many other things blasphe.
nously spake they against him.

Sect. 137. Jesus is tried by the council. LukeAnd as soon as it was day, the elders of the people, and the chief priests, and the scribes, came together, and led him into their council. 18 10 John The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples and of his doctrine. Jesus answered him,

spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort, and in secret have I said nothing. Why askest thou me ? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, sayfing, Answerest thou the high priest so? Jesus lanswered him, If I have spoken evil, bear wit
