Mar. And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that
Elias must first come?

Mat. And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say
the scribes that Elias must first come?

Mat. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come and restore all things:

But I say unto you, that Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed:

Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

Mar. And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things,

And how it is written (i. e. told them how it is written) of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. But I say unto you, that Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him. (aλλæ λsyw vliv, I not only allow that Elies must first come, but I assure you that he is come already.)

Mat. Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

Sect. 73. In the country of Casarea Philippi, Jesus cures

a youth afflicted with an epilepsy, and foretels bis own sufferings the fourth time. Sect. 72.101.

9 37 Luke And it came to pass, that on the next day when they were come down from the hill, much people met him. And behold a man of the company cried out, saying,

Mar. And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them. And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, aud running to him, saluted him. And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them?

And one of the multitude answered and said, Mat. And when they were come to the multitude,

There came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,

Mat. Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is lunatic, and sore vexed:

For oft-times he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. See Mark, ver. 22. Mar. Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit:

And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him. Luke Master, I beseech thee look upon my son, for he is mine only child. And lo, a spirit taketh him,

And he suddenly crieth out, and it teareth him, Luke That he foameth again, and bruising him, hardly departeth from him.

Mar. And he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away.

Mat. And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.

Mar. And I spake to thy disciples, that they should cast him out, and they could not.

40 Luke And I besought thy disciples to cast him out, and they could not.

Mat. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you?

How long shall I suffer you? bring him hither

to me.

Mar. He answered him and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you?

How long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. 41 Luke And Jesus answering, said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you,

And suffer you? Bring thy son hither.

42 Luke And as he was yet a-coming,

The devil threw him down, and tare bin.

Mar. And they brought him unto him :

us.

And when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him,

Mar. And he fell on the ground, and wallowed, foaming, And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters to destroy him: (See Matt. ver. 15.) but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. Mar. When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee come out of him, and enter no more unto him.

And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him; and he was as one dead, insomuch that many said, He is dead. But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up, and he arose. Mat. And Jesus rebuked the devil.

And he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.

Luke And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit,

And healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

Mar. And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately,

Why could not we cast him out?

Mat. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said,
Why could not we cast him out?
Mat. And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief;
for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain
of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain,
Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove;
and nothing shall be impossible unto yo....
Mat. Howbeit, this kind goeth not out, but by prayer and
fasting.

Mar. And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing but by prayer and fasting.

9 43 Luke And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God:

-

Luke But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did,

He said unto his disciples, Let these sayings

sink down into your ears.

Mat. And while they abode in Galilee,

Jesus said unto them,

Mar. And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it. For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, Mar. The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, And they shall kill him, and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

Mat. The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of

men:

And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again.

Luke For the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands

of men.

45 Luke But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them that they perceived it not;

And they feared to ask him of that saying.

Mar. But they understood not that saying,
And were afraid to ask him.

Mat. And they were exceeding sorry.

Sect. 74. The didrachmas are paid in Capernaum, The parable of the servant debtors.

Mar. And he came to Capernaum,

Mat. And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money, that take, and give unto them for me and thee. 46 Luke Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be the greatest. (Or rather, Now there had arisen a dispute, &c. namely, as they went into Capernaum. See Mark, ver. 33.)

Mar. And being in the house, he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way? But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves who should be the greatest. And he sat down and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the ame shall be last of all, and servant of all.

Mat. At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? Mat. And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them.

Mar. And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them.

9 47Lake And Jesus perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him.

Mat. And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever, therefore, shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Mar. And when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,"

Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me.

48 Luke And said unto them,

And we forbade him, because he followeth not with us.

Mar. But Jesus said, Forbid him not:

Mar. For there is no man which shall do a miracle in my
name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

Luke For he that is not against us, is for us.

drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, ve-
rily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

His neck, and that he were drowned in

the depth of the sea.

Mat. Woe unto the world because of offences; for it must
needs be that offences come, but woe to that man
by whom the offence cometh."

Mat. Wherefore, if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut
them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for
thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than
having two hands or two feet to be cast into ever-
lasting fire.
Mar. And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off; it is better
for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two
hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shail
be quenched; where their worm dieth not, and the
ire is not quenched. And if thy foot offend thee,
cut it off; it is better for thee to enter halt into
life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into
the fire that never shall be quenched; where their
vorm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Mat. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast

it from thee:

It is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell-fire.

Mar. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out;

It is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell-fire.

Mar. Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 49. For every one shall be salted with ire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. Salt is good; but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will you season it? Have salt in yourelves, and have peace one with another.

Mat. Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones, &c. to the end.

Sect. 75. Jesus goes up to the fourth passover.

Mat. And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee,

And came into the coasts of Judea beyond Jordan.

Mar. And he arose from thence,

And cometh into the coasts of Judea, by the farther side of Jordan.

Mat. And great multitudes followed him, and he healed

them there.

Mar. And the people resort unto him again, (viz. the inbabitants of Perea), and, as he was wont, he taught them again.
