John.

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God, was, as it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Luke Now, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Frachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abiene, Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repen tance, for the remission of sins;

As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, and make his paths straight. 6 John There was a man sent from God, whose name

7

was John.

The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe.

Came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance, for the remission of sins.

Luke ways shall be made smooth; and all flesh shall
see the salvation of God.

8 John He was not that light, but was sent to bear wit-
ness of that light, that (or rather which) was.
the true light, which lighteth every man that
cometh into the world. He was in the world,
and the world was made by him, and the world
knew him not. He came unto his own, and
his own received him not. But as many as re-
ceived him, to them gave he power to become
the sons of God, even to them that believe on
his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor
of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man,
but of God. And the Word was made flesh, i. e.
became man, and dwelt among us, and we be- ›
held his glory, the glory as of the only begot-
ten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Mat. And the same John had his raiment of camels
hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and
his meat was locusts and wild honey.

Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan, and were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

Mark. And there went out unto him all the land of Judea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

And John was clothed with camels hair, and with a girdle of skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey.

Luke Then said he to the multitude which came forth to be baptized of him,

O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Mat. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them.

O generation of vipers, who hath warned. you to flee from the wrath to come?

Mat. Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repen

tance.

And think not to say within yourselves,
We have Abraham to our father.
Luke Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repen-

tance.

And begin not to say within yourselves,
We have Abraham to our father.

Mat. For I say unto you, that God is able of these
stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
Luke For I say unto you, that God is able of these
stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
Mat. And now also the ax is laid unto the root of
the trees:

Therefore every tree which bringeth not
forth good fruit,

Is bewn down, and cast into the fire.

He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and ne that hath meat, let him do likewise. Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? And he said unto them, Exact no nore than what is appointed you. And the soldiers ikewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we lo? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, either accuse any falsely, and be content with your wages.

I indeed have baptized you with water:

But he shall baptize you with the Holy
Ghost.

He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.

I indeed baptize you with water unto repen

He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire..

But the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

18 Luke And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. But Herod the tetrarch being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, added yet this above all, that he shut up John in pri

Mat. John, to be baptized of him. But John forbade him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering, said unto him, Suffer it to be so now, for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteous

ness.

Then he suffered him.

Mar. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee,

And was baptized of John in Jordan.

Mar. And straightway coming up out of the water,
He saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit
Like a dove descending upon him.
Mat. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up
straightway out of the water:

And lo, the heavens were opened unto

him, and he saw the Spirit of God

Descending like a dove, and lighting upon him.

Luke Now, when all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also being baptized,

And praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Ghost

Descended in a bodily shape, like a dove upon him.

Luke And a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased.

Mar. And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Mat. And lo, a voice from heaven, saying,

This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

1 15 John John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me, for he was before me. And of his fulness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. Sect. 16. The genealogy of Jesus by his mother Mary.

Mar. And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.

And he was there in the wilderness forty days tempted of Satan, and was with the wild beasts. -LukeAnd in those days he did eat nothing.

And when they were ended,
He afterward hungered.

Mat. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights,
He was afterwards an hungered.

Mat. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou
be the Son of God,

Command that these stones be made bread. 3 Luke And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God,

Command this stone that it be made bread.

Mat. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone,

But by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

4 Luke And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written that man shall not live by bread alone,.

But by every word of God.

N. B. Luke introduceth the third temptation here, but without affirming the order; wherefore verse 9,—12. come in betaveen verse 4. and 5.

9 Luke And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple,

And said unto him, If thou be the Son of God,

cast thyself down from hence.

Mat. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God,

cast thyself down.

Mat. For it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee.

And in their hands they shall bear thee up,

Lest at any time thou dash thy foot against

a stone.

10 Luke For it is written, he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee.

11

And in their hands they shall bear thee up,
Lest at any time thou dash thy foot against

a stone.

Shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world
in a moment of time.

Mat. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain,

And sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world,
and the glory of them.

Mat. And saith unto him, All these will I give thee,
If thou wilt fall down and worship me.
