DISCOURSE I.

CHRIST THE LIGHT AND LIFE OF THE WORLD.

ST. JOHN, viii. 12.

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

WHENEVER any one is really in earnest in seeking the way of salvation, his mind will be filled with delight and surprise to discover, on perusing the sacred volume, a constant recurrence of the blessed promise of divine life to the faithful followers of Christ : among which is that given in my text. And O may that gracious Spirit, which can alone impart light and life, give to each of us now present, such true discernment, while we are contemplating this subject, as may lead us to the attainment of spiritual life here, and eternal life hereafter. For, as St. Paul saith, "Godliness is profitable in all things, having the promise of the life Dis.
