cuted; "for though fallen, I shall rise again. -Yes, I will, I do acknowledge my Saviour." Though afflicted and not yet comforted, turn to the strong hold-even to Jesus, the mediator. Look to the blood of the everlasting covenant, and be saved! O Israel, trust in the Lord; for with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption, and he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities, and thou shalt yet be the joy of many generations. Thou shalt rejoice in the Lord, and shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel, as it is written in Isaiah xlv. "In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory:" and again, Isaiah xlvi. “I will place salvation in Zion for Israel my glory." Arise then, and shake thyself from the dust, O daughter of Zion; thy King reigneth, and the glory of the Lord is rising upon thee to restore thee to thy Father's house, if thou wilt return unto the Lord with supplication and with mourning, and loathe thyself for thy transgressions. "Return unto me," saith the Lord, " for why will ye die, O house of Israel? I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, but rather that he should return unto me, and live." Then will the Lord heal thee, and thou shalt be cleansed. It must here, however, be particularly observed, that in the

books of the prophets, where great and precious promises are made to Israel, that these things shall be done for his holy name's sake, which they have profaned in all the lands where they went, or have been driven; "And I will sanctify my great name, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes; and I will take you, and gather you, &c. A new heart and a new spirit will I give you, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people; and yet for all this will the Lord be intreated: for thus saith the Lord God, I will yet for this be inquired of by the house of Israel to do it for them." O then let us urge them to pray earnestly unto God for his grace and favour, and for the influence of his Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth, and to a sincere repentance for all their transgressions, and hardness of heart.

The promise is sure" that when thou art in tribulation, even in the latter days, if thou turn unto the Lord thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice, he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them." The gracious God is even now expostulating with Israel; and how affecting

is the language of expostulation, which we read in their own prophets, and in the Psalms, and which ought deeply to penetrate every heart! And though much of this relates to Israel of old, on their disobedience, ingratitude, and frequent departures from God; yet doth it equally apply to those who are now in a state of alienation, and are in open rebellion against that blessed Saviour, who even wept over their devoted city-who is still waiting to be acknowledged by them, that he may gather them from among the nations to show mercy and forgiveness, though they have rebelled against him. And, O that we had the tongues of angels to persuade them-to entreat them to be reconciled to God, through Jesus Christ, the only way of acceptance, and no longer to grieve the Holy Spirit by continuing to disregard and slight those promises which have been made to them, and the invitations which are again given to them (I may say, by us); but hasten to acknowledge their Redeemer, and to receive all who shall come in his name, saying, "Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord-Hosannah in the highest!" And be assured, O daughter of Zion, that he who first came unto thee meek and lowly in heart, will appear again with power; and his praise shall be glorious.

He will yet be acknowledged thy Redeemer -thy King-thy King of glory of Israel! For the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. And all the faithful who have been renewed unto holiness, will be made partakers of his eternal glory.

But it must not be imagined that it is here to be understood that Israel will not be restored to the favour of God until the second coming of Christ: for how then could those predictions be fulfilled which are not yet completed? That Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth, and shall yet be a blessing; and they shall be as the stones of a crown lifted up as an ensign on his land. Let us then, my Christian brethren, gird up ourselves afresh, and use every possible means to bring home the wandering and lost sheep to the fold of Christ; and be careful that we do not by our conduct and uncharitableness put any impediment in our brother's way. Rather

let them have cause to perceive that Christians love them for the Fathers' sakes, for their souls' sake, and feel a real interest for their salvation. Lastly, it must here be observed with all due reverence, that the honour and glory of God are concerned in fulfilling the promises made to his ancient

people; and for his great name's sake, he will be exalted and glorified in Israel.

This, then, being duly acknowledged, I would now make a few brief inquiries, and conclude with some remarks which may be applicable to many of us; and must urge and intreat every one to assist in the great work of advancing the glory of God, by endeavouring to promote the salvation of our elder brethren the Jews.-Do we feel any love and gratitude to God for the mercy shown to us in the blessings of redemption? Let us prove it by commiserating the Jews! Let us aid in distributing that holy book in their own language, which may impart to them the light of life.-Do we experience any joy and peace in believing? Ó let us endeavour to make them participators! - Are we Christians? true disciples of our Lord? Let us testify to the Jew that we have not merely a name to live whilst we may be spiritually dead, but that vital principle which actuates us in seeking to inspire them with the same hopes, the same views, the same ardent love for the Redeemer, which we ourselves possess being convinced that he was the only begotten Son of the Father, full of grace and truth; for in him: dwelt all the fulness of the Godhead bodily, as he was the brightness of his Father's glory, and
