Shine on our souls, eternal God
Should famine o'er the mourning field
Sing to the Lord, who loud proclaims
Sinners! the voice of God regard
So let our lips and lives express
Songs of immortal praise belong

Spring up, my soul, with ardent flight

Sons of Adam! join to raise

Sov'reign of life, I own thy hand

Supreme and universal light

Sure there's a righteous God

Sure the blest comforter is nigh

Sweet is the friendly voice which speaks
Sweet is the mem'ry of thy grace
Sweet is the work, my God, my King

TEACH me, O teach me, Lord thy way

Teach me the measure of my days

Thanks for mercies past receive
That awful hour will soon appear
The darken'd sky, how thick it low'rs
The day approaches, O my soul

The evils that beset our path

262

Thee we adore, eternal Name

267

[blocks in formation]

The God, who once to Israel spoke
The heart, dejected, sighs to know
The hour of my departure's come
The King of heav'n his table spreads
The Lord, how fearful is his name
The Lord, how kind are all his ways
The Lord into his vineyard comes
The Lord in Zion plac'd his name
The Lord my pasture shall prepare
The Lord of glory reigns supremely great
The Lord of life, with glory crown'd
The Lord, the Judge, his churches warns
The man is ever blest

The man, whose firm and equal mind
The mighty deep gives up her trust
The morning flow'rs display their sweets

The promises I sing

The promise of my Father's love
There is a glorious world on high
There is a God all nature speaks
There is a land of pure delight
The rising morn, the closing day
The Saviour calls; let ev'ry ear
The Saviour, what a noble flame
The spacious firmament on high -
The swift declining day

Th' eternal Sov'reign from on high
The trav❜ller lost in night

They, that have made their refuge God

Thine influence, Lord! is felt

This feast was Jesus' high behest
This is the day the Lord hath made
Those happy realms of joy and peace
Thou art my portion, O my God
Though nature's voice you must obey
Thou hidden love of God, whose height

Thou, Lord, by mortal eyes unseen

Thou pow'r supreme, by whose command we live

Thou, Lord, through ev'ry changing scene

Thou suit'st, O Lord, thy righteous ways
Thrice happy souls, who, born of heav'n

Through all the various shifting scene

Th' uplifted eye, and bended knee
Thus far the Lord has led me on
Thus God th' eternal Father, spake
Thus spake the Saviour, when he sent
Thy ceaseless, unexhausted love
Thy gracious favour, Lord! display
Thy presence, everlasting God'
"Tis by the faith of joys to come
"Tis finish'd!-so the Saviour cried
To calm the sorrows of the mind
To God, the only wise

To heav'n my longing soul! aspire
To-morrow, Lord, is thine

To thee let my first off'rings rise

To thee, my God! my days are known

To thee, O God! my pray'r ascends
To thee, O God! we homage pay

To those who fear and trust the Lord
To your Creator God

Triumphant, Lord! thy goodness reigns
'Twas by an order from the Lord
'Twas for our sake, eternal God

'Twas God who hurl'd the rolling spheres
'Twas on that dreadful, doleful night
UP to the Lord, who reigns on high
Upward I lift mine eyes
VAST are thy works, almighty Lord
Vital spark of heav'nly flame
WEARY of these low scenes of night

We feel thy awful chast'ning rod
Welcome the hope of Israel's race
We praise the Lord for heav'nly bread
We sing th' almighty pow'r of God
We sing the wise, the gracious plan
What eyes like thine, eternal Sire
What glory gilds the sacred page
What mean these jealousies and fears
What sinners value, I resign

What strange perplexities arise.

When darkness long has veil'd my
When death appears before my sight
When gloomy thoughts and fears
When God reveal'd his gracious name

What works of wisdom, pow'r and love
When Abrah'm full of sacred awe
When all the pow'rs of nature fail
When all thy mercies, O my God
When blooming youth snatch'd away

[blocks in formation]

When o'er the trodden paths of life
When overwhelm'd with grief

When present suff'rings pain my heart
When rising from the bed of death
Wherefore should man, frail child of clay
Where high the heav'nly temple stands
Wherewith shall I approach the Lord
While beauty clothes the fertile vale
While some in folly's pleasures roll
While sounds of war are heard around
While thee I seek, protecting pow'r
While to the grave our friends are borne
Whilst sinners, who presume to bear
Who, gracious Father! can complain
Who shall against the Lord prevail
Who shall ascend thy heav'nly place
Why is my heart with grief opprest
Why should this world delight us so
Why sinks my weak desponding mind
Why will ye lavish out your years
With ecstacy of joy

With eye impartial, heav'ns high King

With humble heart and tongue

With joy we lift our eyes

With songs and honours sounding loud
With transport, Lord! we view the page
Worthy is he, that once was slain
YE foll❜wers of the prince of peace

Ye golden lamps of heav'n! farewell
Ye humble souls, approach your God
Ye humble souls, complain no more
Ye humble souls, that seek the Lord
