THE lamented Author of the following Lectures had been engaged, in the northern part of the kingdom, in the work of the Christian ministry; but, in consequence of the rupture of a blood-vessel on his lungs, he was necessitated to relinquish his beloved employment; and, as the most probable means of lengthening out his life, he, with the advice of the faculty, repaired to Penzance, his native country, where he lingered out a few years, and ultimately fell a sacrifice to a pulmonary disease, at the age of thirty-three.

But though he was incapable, during the time of his affliction, of regular ministerial work, yet he preached whenever his strength.

permitted. Near the spot where he resided, a little chapel had been erected for the benefit of those who lived in the outskirts of the town; and here he occasionally officiated, and delivered the Lectures that compose this volume.

As they were designed for the instruction of a congregation of plain people, the style is as simple and unadorned as possible. The Author aimed only at giving a clear, brief, and compendious view of the great argument on which they treat. And it is believed, that they will furnish a valuable introduction to the study of the subject, and to those larger and more elaborate works which so happily abound among us, and which are the glory of our national literature. They are especially recommended to the teachers of the higher classes in Sunday-schools; and to Christian parents, who desire that their children should "know the certainty of those things wherein they have been instructed," but are often at a loss for a manual of this description; and it is hoped, that the publication of them may

tend, in some degree, to counteract the unprecedented efforts which the votaries of infidelity

are now making to poison the minds of our children and youth.
