I raised thee ùp, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. 18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hàrdeneth. 19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? for who hath resistèd his will? 20 Nay but, Ō man, who art thou that repliest against Gòd? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thús? 21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? 22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: 23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory: 24 Even ùs, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? 25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them My people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. 26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people: there shall they be called, The children of the living God. 27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved, 28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. 29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrah.

SALVATION OPEN TO ALL BELIEVERS.

ROMANS X.-14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sènt? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things. 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our repórt? 17 So then, faith cometh by hearing, and hearing

by the word of God. 18 But I say, have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. 19 But I say, Did not Israel knów? First, Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you. 20 But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not àfter me. 21 But to Israel he saith, all day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

ALL ISRAEL NOT REJECTED.

ROMANS XI.—1 I say then, hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abrahám, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elías? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, 3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altárs; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. 4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. 5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grǎce: otherwise work is no more work. 7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded. 8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slùmber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day. 9 And David saith, Let their table be made a snàre, and a trap, and a stùmblingblock, and a recòmpense unto them: 10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back always. 11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gèntiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. 12 Now, if the fall of them be the riches of the

world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fùlness? 13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: 14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them. 15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? 16 For if the first fruit be holy, the lump is also holy and if the root be holy, so are the branches. 17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou being a wild ólive-tree, wert graffed in amóng them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olíve-tree; 18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. 19 Thou wilt say then, the branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. 20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: 21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. 22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of Gòd: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. 23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in for God is able to graff them in again. 24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive-tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive-tree; how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed in their own olive-tree?

DAYS AND MEATS INDIFFERENT.

ROMANS XIV.-1 Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. 2 For one believeth that he may eat all things; another, who is weak, eateth herbs. 3 Let not him that eateth, despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not, judge him that eateth for God hath received him. 4 Who art thou that judgest another man's sèrvant? to his own master he standeth or falleth: yea, he shall be holden up for God is able to make him stand. 5 One man esteemeth one day above

another another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. 6 He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lòrd: and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lòrd he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth nót, to the Lòrd he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. 7 For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dìeth to himself. 8 For whether we live, we live unto the Lòrd; and whether we die, we dìe unto the Lord whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lòrd's.

THE APOSTLE'S CONCLUSION.

ROMANS XVI.-25 Now to him that is of power to establish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, 26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: 27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.

PAUL EXHORTETH

TO UNITY.

I CORINTHIANS I.- -10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you: but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind, and in the same judgment. 11 For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contèntions among you. 12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Pàul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. 13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucífied for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gàius; 15 Lest

any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. 16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas; besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. 17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effèct.

PAUL REPROVETH

THEIR

DISSENSIONS.

1 CORINTHIANS III.-1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto càrnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet nòw are ye able. 3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divísions, are ye not carnal, and walk as mén? 4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apóllos; are ye not cárnal? 5 Who then ìs Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? 6 I have planted, Apollos watèred: but God gave the increase. 7 So then, neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth: but God that giveth the increase. 8 Now he that plánteth and he that watéreth are one and every man shall receive his own reward, according to his own labour. 9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. 10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master-builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. 11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation, gold, silver, precious stones, wood, háy stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fìre; and the fire shall try every man's work, of what sort it is. 14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. 16 Know ye not that ye are the temple
