poor man, who sincerely receives the Gospel as it is given, is in a fairer way of becoming a worthy Christian, than he who is puffed up with the vain conceit of his worldly wisdom.

If the meek of the earth sometimes feel the contempt of the wealthy, and the oppression of the powerful, religion will yet raise them above discontent, and wipe away the tears of anguish from their eyes. For the same Gospel which has prescribed to them the duties of their station, during the night of this transitory life, has also promised, in the morning of the next, a crown of glory that fadeth not away--a rest from their labours, in a state where the lowest shall far surpass the most exalted in this world, and in the enjoyment of immortal happiness, to which the light afflictions of the present life are not worthy to be compared.

Such being the present peace of mind, and the future hopes, which the Gospel proposes to the meanest of our brethren, let us encourage and assist them to lay hold of those inestimable blessings which are set before them: and if any of them

come short of this happiness, let us beware that it is not for want of that seasonable assistance which it is in our power to afford-that their blood may not be required at our hands. On the contrary, let us hope, through the divine mercy, that the rich who confer, and the poor who receive, the benefit of religious instruction, shall rejoice together in the kingdom of our heavenly Father.
