I. To the Meek, Humble, Contrite.

To the Meek.PSALM, Xxii. 26. The meek shall eat, and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek him; your heart shall live for ever.

Ps. xxv. 9. The meek will he guide in judgment, and the meek will he teach his way.

Ps. xxvii. 11. The meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Matt. v. 5. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Ps. cxlvii. 6. The Lord lifteth up the meek. He casteth the wicked down to the ground.

Ps. clxix. 4. The Lord taketh pleasure in his people; he will beautify the meek with his salvation.

Zeph. ii. 3. Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judg ment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger.

Is. xi. 4. With righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth.

Is. xxix. 19. The meek shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the holy one of Israel.

1 Pet. iii. 3. Whose adorning, let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel: Ver. 4. But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible; even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. Prov. xiv. 29. He that is slow to wrath, is of great understanding.

Prov. xv. 18. He that is slow to anger, ap

peaseth strife. Ver. 1. A soft answer turneth away wrath.

Prov. xvi. 32. He that is slow to anger, is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit, than he that taketh a city.

Prov. xix. 11. The discretion of a man deferreth his anger, and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

Prov. xx. 3. It is an honour to a man to cease from strife.

To the humble.-Job, xxii. 29. He shall save the humble person.

Ps. ix. 12. He forgetteth not the cry of the humble.

Ps. x. 17. Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble.

Ps. cxxxviii. 6. Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.

Prov. iii. 34. Surely, he scorneth the scorners; but he giveth grace to the humble.

James, iv. 6. Wherefore he saith, he resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 1 Pet. v. 5.

Prov. xi. 2. When pride cometh, then cometh shame; but with the lowly is wisdom. Prov. xv. 33. The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

Prov. xviii. 12. Before destruction, the heart of man is hearty; and before honour is hu mility.

Prov. xxix. 23. A man's pride shall bring him low; but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

Prov. xvi. 19. Better is it to be of an hum. ble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Prov. xxii. 4. By humility, and the fear of the Lord, are riches, honour, and life.

Matt. xxiii. 12. Whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. Luke, xviii. 14.

Matt. xviii. 4. Whosoever shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

To the contrite and mourners.-Ps. xxxiv. 18. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Ps. li. 17. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Ps. xlvii. 3. He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds,

Eccl. vii. 3. Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

Is. lvii. 15. Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is HOLY. I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit: to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones

Is. lxvi. 2. To this man will I look, even to him that is of a poor and contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

Matt. v. 3. Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Ver. 4. Blessed arc they that mourn; for they shall be comforted.

II. To them that Suffer for Righteousness' sake.

Matt. v. 10. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Ver. 11. Blessed are ye when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil things against you falsely, for my sake. Ver. 12. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Matt. x. 39. He that findeth his life, shall lose it; and he that loseth his life, for my sake, shall find it.

Matt. xix. 29. Every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundred fold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

2 Cor. iv. 9. Persecuted, but not forsaken. 2 Tim. ii. 12. If we suffer, we shall also reign with him.

Rom. viii. 17. If so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Ver. 35. Who shall separate us from the love
