the new Testament call’d the Lords day.

I hall here do two chings.

1. Shew the Reasons why we should observe this day. 2. The Manner bow we should observe it.

The first I fhill shew in chele Particulars following.

1. We find a Sabbath infticured by God himself from the beginning, Gen.2.2,3. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work. which he had made, and God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it, becaisse that in it be bad refted from all his work, which God created and made, Before we read of the fall of Adam, we read of a seventh day, blessed and Tanctified by Gdhimielf: God blessed the seventh day, chat is; dispensed a peculiar favour tosvards is, exalced that day above the rest; which is intimaţ din the nzxc words, he sanctified it, that is, he separated and consecrated it to his oyn holy WorShip and annexed a blessing ta the observation of it. Cidam did not need a day of rest in innocency, by reason of any bodily wearinesse that would have betided him upon his six daies labour in his calling of husbandry; yet God saw it convenient to enjoyn him to set apart one day in seven, to enjoy more especial communion with his Crex for. Now if Adany in innocency (when he had no fin in him) had need of a Sabbath, to


cake him off from the works of his calling, that
he mighe converse with God (more immediat-
ly) in holy duties, and exercises : How much
more need have we in chis corrupt estate, who are
fo prone to sin, and had need of all helps against
ic? Well chen, we find in the very beginning,
chat che Law concerning the Sabbath was given
while the whole Nature of mankind was in one
first Parents, even before chey fell. They might
have lived here on the earth without siz, buc
chey were noc to live without a Sabbath.

After the fall, when Enos was born of Seth,che
son of Adam, it is said chat then men began to call
on the Name of the Lord, Gen 4.ult. That is,
(as I cake ic) to call upon his Name in publick
Assemblies ; And most like it is, the day they
observed was the same that Abel and Seth and
Adam observed before them, and the rest of the
Patriarchs after them; Namely, that day of the
week, in which God himself rested, having fi-
nished the great work of the wor!ds creation:
Even before the Law (saith learned Mercer upon
Gen.) i dombt not but this day by Gods teaching,
was solemn and sacred to those primitive Fathers.
Neither did the observation thereof (faith Peter
Martyr, begin with the giving of
th: law in Sinai, but it was celebrated before. Of
the fame opinion is the judicious Rivet, who
answers all Arguments brought to the contrary,
in 2 Gen. Exerc, 13. And indeed there is no rea-



son to think otherwise: For besides that in Adams heart the Law of Nature was perfectly im. pripted (and to consecrate some time to the Worship of God, was, and is a member of that Law) 'Tis more than probable, God did di&tate and prescribe co Adam all circumstances of his Worship, which by tradition past to his pofterity, and were in their several Families, until Meses, observed.

II. We find a Sabbath observed by the Patri. archs, in Exod.16. Before the giving of the Law, we find there an expresse charge couching che observation of it; and two such Miracles to racifie and set a value upon ir, v.2 2, & 27. as seldom we read of greater. The Manna fell in great plenty on the fox daies, and on the seventh none. 2. Being gathered on the sixth day, it remained (weet to the seventh, and not so or any other day observed therefore it was ac chis time, and surely in obedience to Gods command: For we must not impute will-worship to these holy men I shall end this with the words of the learned Pareus in com. on Gen. God fan&tified the Sabbath in the very prime creation, and dosbtles that fanctification was observed in the Patriarchal, Fanilies

III. After all this, we find the day again (for the better observation of it) proclaimed or Meant Sinai, Exod.20. and that in a very dreadful, and glorious manner, having a more folemn en




trance into it, and more suleman reasons to hedge it in, and confirm is, than any of the other Commandements. God (being to give his moral and immutable Lawes to his people) doch fift apply himself to them as fewes, rouzing their accension by inculcacing the late signal mercies he had confer'd on them, hereby to excite them to a more ftrict observation of what he was now co give them in charge ; so that though the introduction be proper to the Femes, yet the com. mandements have a larger extent, and are spoken alike to all.

Now 'cis very observable the Jewish or Saturday Sabbath, or fevexth from the creation is nog in expresse cerms commanded in the fourth Commandement : That we shall perceive, if we look over the Commandement,

1. Remember thou sanctifie the Sabbath day. The Sabbath day it is you see, and not the seventh from the Creacion. Observe faies Zanchy, God said not, Remember thon fanctifie the seventh day, but the day of reft ; (thac is) the day that is confccrated to reft, either immcdiatly by himself, or mediately by the Church, directed by the Holy

Ghost, whatsoever day it be: So chac che day must be of Divine Institution.

2. God cellech us diftinetly what Sabbath he here meaos, viz. the weekly. He faith, Sanetifie the Sabbath, in the fingular number, not sabbaths, in the plural. The observation (not of ma

ny festivals bue) of one onely is there enjoyned, faith the learned Furius.

3. The Sabbath must be sanctified, but what day is appointed for it? six daies phalt thou labour : Six daies are ours: The seventh is the Sabbach. A seventh God will have: But what sex venth ? He saies not, the seventh from the Cres tion. He names no day (as intending the day should change) He saith only the seventh, i.e, The seventh after

six working daies. 4. But is the determination of this one in :ven in our power? No, for it must be the Sabbath of the Lord thy God, i, e, which he hath already, or should hereafter declare to his Church, co be his Sabbath. It must be Gods own choice.

Now thac the fourth Commandement is moral, will appear, if we consider,

1. Except it be moral, chere cannot be ten Commandements, and yet so we find, Deut.104.

fo And he wrote on the tables, according to the forf, writing, the ten Commandements, which the Lord Spake unto you in the Mount, out of the midst of i be fire, in the day of the Assembly : And the Lord gave them unto me. To keep some time holy to the Lord, and to keep that time which he should ap: point is absolutely moral. Now'tis plain, a sabbath God must have by the perpetual ordinance of the fourth Commandement. Remember thou farctifié the Sabbath day, i.e. That day which for the time being, God hath marked 014t and appoint,
