soever sinneth hath not seen him, I neither known him. Little childreu, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. Ho that committeth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 1 John v, 18. What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth. The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will show then his covenant. ye his saints: for there is no want Ps. xxxiv, 9, 10. O fear the Lord, to them that fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing. is high above the earth, so great Ps. ciii, 11, 12. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wis lom; and the knowledge of the Holy is understanding: For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. Prov. xiv, 26. 27. In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence; and his children shall have a place of refuge. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. Prov. xvi, 6, 7. By mercy and truth iniquity is purged; and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil. When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at Deace with him. Prov. xix, 23. The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil." Isa. xxxiii, 6. And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure. Luke i 50. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generatiou to generation. Prov. i, 29-31. For that they had hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof: There fore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. TO WORSHIP HIM. Gen. xxii, 5. And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. Gen. xxiv, 26. And the man bowed down his head and worshipped the LORD. 1 Sam. xv, 30, 31. Then he said, I have sinned; yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God. So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD. 1 Chron. xvi, 29. Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. Ps. xxvi, 14. I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the LORD more than they that watch for the morning; say, more than they that watch for the morning. Isa. viii, 17. And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him. Isa. xvil, 7. At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel. Isa. xxx, 18. And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracions unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him. Isa. xl, 31. But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Micah vil, 7. If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; if thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; heart consider it and he that doth not he that pondereth the keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not be render to every man according to bis works? Prov. xxviii, 26. He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoSo walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. Jer. iv, 14. O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved: how long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee? Jcr. vi, 18, 19. Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them. Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it. Ezek. xi, 21. But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord GOD. Matth. xv, 18-20. But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man. Mark vil, 20--23. And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. Acts vill, 21,22. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. James iv, 17. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. TEMPTATION. Prov. ix, 15-17. To call passengers who go right on their ways: Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is plea sant. Prov. xii, 26. The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them. Prov. xvi, 29. A violent man enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him into the way that is not good. Prov. xxviii, 10. Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession. Matth. iv, 10, 11. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. Matth v, 19. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least comman Imments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called Matth. xviii, 6, 7. But whoso shall of the sea. because of offences! for it must Matth. xxiii, 13. But woe unto Mark iv, 15. And these are they by the way-side, where the word is sown; but, when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. Mark ix, 42. And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea. Luke xvii, 1, 2. Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him through whom they come! It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. Luke xxii, 40. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. 2 Cor. 1, 11. Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. 2 Cor. xii, 7. And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. Eph. ii, 2. Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. 1 Thess. iii, 5. For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I' sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain. 1 Tim. v, 15. For some are already turned aside after Satan. 2 Tim. lii, 13. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. 1 John il, 26. These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. SAFEGUARD AGAINST TEMPTATION. WATCHFULNESS AND PRAYER. Neh. iv, 9. Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them. Amos iv, 12. Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and be cause I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel. Matth. xxiv, 42-44. Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour But know your Lord doth come. this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. fore; for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. Matth. xxv, 13. Watch there Matth. xxvi, 40, 41. And he findeth them asleep, and saith cometh unto the disciples, and unto Peter, What! could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Mark xiii, 33--37. Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore; for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cock-crowing, or in the morning; Lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you, I say unto all, Watch. Mark xiv, 37, 38. And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? Watch ye, and pray, lest ye enter into temptation: the spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. Luke xii, 35-38. Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning, And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will returu from the wedding, that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. Luke xxi, 33-36. Heaven and earth shall pass away; but my words shall not pass away. And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Luke xxil, 46. And said unto them, Why sleep ye? Rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. 1 Cor. xvi, 13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. 1 Peter iv, 7. But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. Rev. iii, 2.3. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. CAUTION AGAINST IN- Num. xiv, 22. Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles which I did-in Egypt, and in the wilderness, have tempted me now these ten times. Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, Deut. vi, 16. Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. Deut. xxxii, 6. Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee? 2 Chron. xxxli, 25. But Hezeklah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem. Ps. Ixxviii, 18, 41, 56. And they tempted God in their heart, by asking meat for their lust. Yea, they turned back, and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. Yet they tempted and | provoked the most hign God, and Isa. xxvi, 10. Let favour be Hosea vil, 15. Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me. Hosea xiii, 5, 6. I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought. According to their pasture, so were they filled: they were filed, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me. Matth. iv, 7. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Luke iv, 12. And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 1 Cor. x, 13. There hath no is common to man: but God is temptation taken you but such as faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. If yo were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. John xvii, 14-18. I have given them thy word; and the world hated them, because they are not the world. I pray not that thou of the world, even as I am not of shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. Rom. xii, 2. And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. Col. iii, 2. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. James iv, 4. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the NON-CONFORMITY TO THE world is the enemy of God. Isa. x, 24, 25. Therefore thus Isa. 11, 7, 8 Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings: For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: 1 John ii, 15-18. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any min love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. 1 John iii, 13.
