2 Chron. xxiv, 19-21. Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear. PUNISHED BY GOD. Deut. xxx, 7. And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that bate thee, which persecuted thee. Neh. ix, 26-28. Nevertheless they

were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets, which testified against them to turn them to thee; and they wrought great provocations. Therefore thou deliveredst them

into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and, according to thy manifold mercies, thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies. But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them, according to thy mercies.

For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well-doing, than for evil-doing. 1 Peter iv, 12-14, 16-19. Beloved, think it not strarge concerning the flery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the Spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in welldoing, as unto a faithful Creator.
