love toward him. For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things. To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing to whom I forgave it, for your sakes förgave I it in the person of Christ.

John xili, 20. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

2 Cor. x, 8. For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, (which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction,) I should not be ashamed.

2 Cor. xiii, 2, 10. I told you before, and foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent, now I write to them which heretofore have sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not spare: Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification and not to destruction.

THEIR CLAIMS UPON THE
PEOPLE.

Matth. x, 11-13, 41. And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. And when ye come into an house, salute it. And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it be not worthy, let He your peace return to you. that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man, shall

receive a righteous man's reward.

Luke x, 16. He that heareth you, heareth me; and he that despiseth yon, despiseth me; and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me.

Luke x, 11. Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding, be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

THE SEVENTY.

Luke x, 1, 9. After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place whither he himself would come. And heal the sick that are therein; and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

BISHOPS.

1 Tim. ii, 1-7. This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravty; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest, being lifted up with pride, he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach, and the snare of the devil.

Titus 1, 7-9. For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not self-willed, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

ELDERS.

Acts xiv, 23. And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with

fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.

Acts xx, 17. And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church.

1 Tim. v, 17-19. Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.

Titus i, 5, 6. For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee. If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of riot,

or unruly.

1 Pet. v, 1. The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed.

DEACONS.

a

Acts vi, 1-5. And in those days when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch.

1 Tim. lil, 8-13. Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the mystery of the faith in a

pure conscience. And let these

also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacens be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For they that have used the office of

a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

ITINERANT LABOURERS.

Acts viii, 25. And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

Acts xiv, 21, 24-26. And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia. And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia; And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled.

Acts xv, 25-27, 33. It seemed

good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul; Men that

have hazarded their lives for the

name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by month. And after they had tarried there a space, they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles.

Acts xviii, 27. And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace. [Apollos.]

Acts xix, 22. So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

1 Cor. iv, 17. For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.

1 Cor. xvi, 10-12. Now, if Timotheus come, see that he may be with you without fear: for he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do. Let no man therefore despise him; but conduct him forth in peace, that he may come unto me: for I look for him with the brethren. As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren: but his will was not at all to come at this time; but he

will come when he shall have convenient time.

2 Cor. vill, 22. And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you.

Eph. vi, 21, 22. But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother shall make known to you all and faithful minister in the Lord,

And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink. And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus: for, seen in a vision a man named behold, he prayeth, And hath Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight. HIS CONVERSION.

Acts xvii, 14, 15. And then imno-mediately the brethren sent away Paul, to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still. And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

Acts xviii, 23. And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples.

Acts xix, 1, 21. And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples. After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achala, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

Acts xx, 2, 3, 25. And when he had gone over those parts, and had given them much exhortation, he came into Greece. And there abode three months: and when the Jews laid wait for him, as he was about to sail into Syria, he purposed to return through Macedonia. And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the Kingdom of God, shall see my face no

more.

Rom. 1, 10. Making request (if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God) to come unto you.

Rom. xv, 22-24, 28. For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you. But now having no more place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come unto you: Whensoever I take my journey into Spain, I will come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, if first I be somewhat filled with your company. When therefore I have performed this, and have sealed to them this fruit, I will come by you into Spain.

1 Cor. iv, 10, 18-20. We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but

ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised. Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you. But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power. For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.

1 Cor. ix, 2. If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.

1 Cor. xv, 9-11. For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am; and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I,

but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore, whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

1 Cor. xvi, 5-8. Now I will come unto you, when I shall pass through Macedonia; (for I do pass through Macedonia;) And it may be that I will abide, yea, and winter with you, that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go. For I will not see you now by the way; but I trust to tarry a while with you, if the Lord permit. But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost.

2 Cor. i, 15, 16. And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit; And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judea.

2 Cor. ii, 12, 13. Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord. I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but, taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.

2 Cor. x, 7. Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.

2 Cor. xi, 5. For I suppose I was not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles.

2 Cor. xii, 11, 12. I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you; for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing. Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in sigus, and wonders, and mighty deeds.

Gal. i, 17, 18, 21. Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again into Damascus. Then, after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia.

Gal. ii, 1. Then, fourteen years after, I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus

with me also.

Phil. ii, 24. But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly.

HIS EXEMPLARY CONDUCT. Acts xx, 18, 19. And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what

manner I have been with you at all seasons, Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews.

1 Cor. iv, 16. Wherefore, I beseech you, be ye followers of me.

2 Cor. iv, 1, 2. Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;

Phil. iv, 9. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

1 Thess. ii, 10. Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that

believe.

2 Thess. iil, 7. For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you.

HIS PREACHING.

Acts ix, 20-22. And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. But all that heard him were amazed, and said, Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and

came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests? But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.

Acts xv, 34, 35. Notwithstanding, it pleased Silas to abide there still. Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

Acts xviii, 11. And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

Acts xx, 26, 27, 31. Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. Fer I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Therefore watch, and remember, that, by the space of three years, I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

Acts xxviii, 31. Preaching the kingdom of God. and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.

need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you? Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men.

2 Cor. iv, 5. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.

2 Cor. v, 20. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye

reconciled to God.

2 Cor. xili, 8. For we can do nothing against the truth, but for

the truth.

Gal. ii, 2. And I went up by communicated revelation, and unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.

Gal. iv, 11, 13. I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain. Ye know how, through infirmity of the flesh, I preached the gospel unto you at the first.

Phil. 11, 16, 22. Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.

HIS LOVE FOR THE CHURCHES.
Rom. i, 11, 12. For I long to see

2 Cor. vi, 11-13. O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged. Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels. Now, for a recompence in the same, (I speak as unto my children) be ye also enlarged.

2 Cor. vii, 3, 4, 12-14. I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you. Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in though I wrote unto you, I did it Wherefore,

not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you. Therefore we were comforted in your comfort; yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all. For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before

Titus, is found a truth.

2 Cor. xit, 15. And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly love you, the less I be loved.

1 Thess. ii, 8, 17-20. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, be cause ye were dear unto us. But we, brethren, being taken

from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured, the more abundantly to see your face with great desire. Wherefore we would have come unto you (even I Paul) once and again; but Satan hindered us. For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? For ye are our glory and joy.

HIS MEEKNESS.

2 Cor. ii, 3-5. And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all. Philemon 8.9, 14. Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient, Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ. But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
