S But ah, how far from mortal sight
The Lord of glory dwells!
A veil of interposing night
His radiant face conceals.
4 O could my longing spirit rise
On strong immortal wing,
And reach thy palace in the skies,
My Saviour and my King!

5 There thousands worship at thy feet,
And there (divine employ!)
The triumphs of thy love repeat,
In songs of endless joy.

6 Thy presence beams eternal day
O'er all the blissful place;

Who would not drop this load of clay, And die to see thy face?

HYMN LII.

The Excellency and Sufficiency of the Scrip

tures.

FATHER of mercies! in thy word

What endless glories shine!

For ever be thy name ador'd

For these celestial lines.

2 Here may the wretched sons of want Exhaustless riches find;

Riches above what earth can grant,
And lasting as the mind.

3 Here the fair tree of knowledge grows,
And yields a free repast,
Sublimer sweets than nature knows
Invite the longing taste.

4 Here the Redeemer's welcome voice
Spreads heavenly peace around;
And life, and everlasting joys
Attend the blissful sound.
50 may these heavenly pages be
My ever dear delight;
And still new beauties may I see,
And still increasing light.

6 Divine Instructor, gracious Lord,
Be thou for ever near;
Teach me to love thy sacred word,
And view my Saviour there.

HYMN LIII.

The Seasons crowned with Goodness.
Psalm lxv. 11.

TERNAL source of every joy!

Eely to raise our lips employ,

While in thy temple we appear,
To hail thee, Sov'reign of the year.
2 Wide as the wheels of nature roll,
Thy hand supports and guides the whole;
The sun is taught by thee to rise,
And darkness when to veil the skies.
3 The flow'ry spring, at thy command,
Perfumes the air, and paints the land;
The summer rays with rigour shine
To raise the corn and cheer the vine.
4 Thy hand in autumn richly pours
Through all our coast redundant stores;
And winters, soften'd by thy care,
No more the face of horror wear.

5 Seasons, and months, and weeks, and days
Demand successive songs of praise;
And be the grateful homage paid,
With morning light and evening shade.
6 Here in thy house let incense rise,
And circling sabbaths bless our eyes,
Till to those lofty heights we soar,
Where days and years revolve no more.

HYMN LIV.

A Funeral Thought.

HARK! from the tombs, a mournful sound, My ears attend the cry:

"Ye living men, come view the ground,
"Where you must shortly lie.'

2 "Princes, this clay must be your bed,
"In spite of all your towers!
"The tall, the wise, the reverend head
"Must lie as low as ours."

3 Great God! is this our certain doom?
And are we still secure?

Still walking downward to the tomb;
And yet prepare no more?

4 Grant us the power of quick'ning grace,
To fit our souls to fly;

Then when we drop this dying flesh,
We'll rise above the sky.

Chorus.

These thy God ordains to bless
The widow and the fatherless.

5 When thine olive plants increasing,
Pour their plenty o'er thy plain,
Grateful thou shalt take the blessing,
But not search the bough again.
Chorus. These, &c.

6 When thy favour'd vintage flowing,
Gladdens thy autumnal scene,
Own the bounteous hand bestowing,
But thy vines the poor shall gleam.
Chorus. These, &c.

7 Still we read thy word declaring
Mercy, Lord, thine own decree;
Mercy every sorrow sharing
-Warms the heart resembling thee.
8 Still the orphan and the stranger,
Still the widow owns thy care,
Screen'd by thee in every danger,
Heard by thee in every prayer.
Hallelujah. Amen.

HYMN LVI.

At the Ordination or Institution of a
Minister.

ATHER of mercies! in thy house
We pay out homage and our vows;

[blocks in formation]

HYMN LVII.
Prayer for Ministers.

ATHER of mercies! bow thine ear, Attentive to our earnest prayer; We plead for those who plead for thee, Successful pleaders may they be!

3 Hence sprang th' Apostle's honour'd name, 2 How great their work, how vast their charge!

Sacred beyond heroic fame;

Hence dictates the prophetic sage,
And hence the evangelic page.

4 In lower forms to bless our eyes,
Pastors from hence and Teachers rise;
Who, though with feebler rays they shine,
Still mark a long extended line.

5 From Christ their varied gifts derive,
And, fed by him, their graces live;
Whilst guarded by his potent hand,
Amidst the rage of hell they stand.
6 So shall the bright succession run,
Through all the courses of the sun;
Whilst unborn churches, by their care,
Shall rise and flourish large and fair.
7 Jesus, our Lord, their hearts shall know
The spring whence all these blessings flow;
Pastors and people shout his praise,
Through the long round of endless days.

Do thou their anxious souls enlarge;
Their best acquirements are our gain,
We share the blessings they obtain.
3 Clothe, then, with energy divine
Their words, and let those words be thine;
To them thy sacred truth reveal,
Suppress their fear, inflame their zeal.
4 Teach them to sow the precious seed,
Teach them thy chosen flock to feed;
Teach them immortal souls to gain—/
Souls that will well reward their pain.
5 Let thronging multitudes around,
Hear from their lips the joyful sound;
In humble strains thy grace implore,
And feel thy new-creating power.
6 Let sinners break their massy chains,
Distressed souls forget their pains;

Let light through distant realms be spread, | And Zion rear her drooping head.

¶ Whenever the Hymns are used at the celebration of divine service, a certain portion or portions of the Psalms of David in metre shall also be sung.

AGAINST all those that with me thoughts love

As pants
At length, by certain proofs, 'tis plain
Behold, O God, how heathen hosts
Bless God, my soul; thou Lord, alone
Bless God, ye servants that attend
Defend me, Lord, from shame
Deliver me, O Lord, my God
Do thou, O God, in mercy help
For ever bless'd be God the Lord
For thee, O God, our constant praise
From lowest depths of foe

the hart for cooling streams 19 No change of time shall ever shock

From my youth up, may Israel say
Give ear, thou Judge of all the earth
God in the great assembly stands
God is our refuge in distress
God's temple crowns the holy mount
Had not the Lord, may Israel say
Happy the man whose tender care
Have mercy, Lord, on me
Hear, O my people, to my law
He's blest whose sins have pardon gain'd
He that has God his guardian made
How good and pleasant must it be
Hold not thy peace, O Lord our God
How blest are they, who always keep
How blest is he, who ne'er consents
How long wilt thou forget me, Lord
How many, Lord, of late are grown
How vast must their advantage be
I'll celebrate thy praises, Lord
In deep distress I oft have cry'd
In Judah the Almighty's known
In thee I put my steadfast trust
In vain, O man of lawless might
I waited meekly for the Lord
Jehovah reigns, let all the earth
Jehovah reigns; let therefore all
Judge me, O Lord, for 1 the paths
Just Judge of heaven, against my foes
Let all the just to God, with joy
Let all the lands, with shouts of joy
Let all the list'ning world attend
Let David, Lord, a constant place
Let God, the God of battle, rise
Lord, hear my cry, regard my prayer
Lord, hear my prayer, and to my cry
Lord, hear the voice of my complaint
Lord, hear the voice of my complaint
Lord, let thy just decrees the king
Lord, not to us, we claim no share
Lord, save me, for thy glorious name
Lord, thou hast granted to thy land
Lord, who's the happy man that may
My crafty foe, with flatt'ring art
My God, my God, why leav'st thou me
My soul for help on God relies
My soul, inspir'd with sacred love

31

O all ye people, clap your hands
35 come, loud anthems let us sing
45 Of merey's never-failing spring

60 O God, who hast our troops dispers❜d
13 O God, my gracious God, to thee
25 O God, my heart is fully bent
24 O God, whose former mercies make
63 O God of hosts, the mighty Lord
27 O God, to whom revenge belongs
59 O Israel's Shepherd, Joseph's Guide
59 O Lord, thou art my righteous Judge
24 O Lord, my God, since I have plac'd
37 O Lord, my rock, to thee I cry
21 O Lord, our fathers oft have told
38 O Lord, to my relief draw near
58 O Lord, the Saviour and defence
19 O Lord, I am not proud of heart
23 O praise the Lord, and thou, my soul
33 O praise the Lord with hymns of joy
14 O praise the Lord, for he is good
40 O praise the Lord with one consent
410 praise the Lord in that blest place
37 O praise ye the Lord

Thy mercies, Lord, shall be my song
Thy presence why withdraw'st thou, Lord
To bless thy chosen race

To God I cry'd, who to my help
To God, our never-failing strength

To God your grateful voices raise

ALAS, what hourly dangers rise

HYMNS.

74 How long shall earth's alluring toys

All glorious God, what hymns of praise 70 Life is the time to serve the Lord

And are we now brought near to God
Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Before Jehovah's awful throne
Christ from the dead is rais'd, and made
Come, Holy Ghost, Creator, come
Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove
Come, Lord, and warm each languid heart
Come, we that love the Lord
Eternal source of every joy

68 Lord, for the just thou dost provide
75 Lord of life, all praise excelling
76 My God, and is thy table spread
67 My God, since thou hast rais'd me up
67 Now may the God of grace and power
68 O that my load of sin were gone
74 0 thou that hear'st when sinners cry
74 Our Lord is risen from the dead
77 Salvation doth to God belong

Far from my thoughts, vain world, be gone 76 Since Christ our Passover is slain

Father of mercies! in thy word
Father of mercies! in thy house
Father of mercies! bow thine ear
From whence these direful omens round
God of the seas! thine awful voice
Go forth, ye heralds, in my name
Go preach my Gospel, saith the Lord
Glory to thee, my God, this night
Hark the glad sound, the Saviour comes
Hark! from the tombs, a mournful sound
Hear what the voice from heaven declares
He's come! let every knee be bent
He dies! the friend of sinners dies
How beauteous are their feet
How oft, alas! this wretched heart
How long, thou faithful God, shall I
How helpless guilty nature lies

77 Should nature's charms to please the eye
77 The God of life, whose constant care
78 The Lord my pasture shall prepare
67 The spacious firmament on high
70 Thou, God, all glory, honour, power
71 To our Redeemer's glorious name
72 To Jesus, our exalted Lord
75 Welcome, sweet day of rest
72 When all thy mercies, O my God
77 When dangers, woes, or death are nigh
71 When, rising from the bed of death
68 When we are rais'd from deep distress
72 When I can read my title clear
72 While angels thus, O Lord, rejoice
73 While shepherds watch'd their flocks by
73 night

73 Ye humble souls, approach your God
