leading to it. Neither are Men only required to honour and adore Chrift; but all the Angels of God also must worship him, Heb. i. 6. And at the name of Jefus, which is above every name, ought every knee to bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth, Phil. ii. 9, 10. And fure thefe Acts of Worship are proper to God; and no greater Honour can be given to the Father. And seeing Chrift is to be worshiped as God, he muft needs be the true God.

AND from hence it follows, that Christ the Son of God is a real Perfon fubfifting in the Godhead; God of God, very God of very God. For he who is infinite in all Perfections, muft needs be God. And he who doth the Works, which none but God can do, and is honoured with the Titles proper to God, can be no lefs than God. And the Divine Honour and WorShip ought to be rendered unto none but him, who is by Nature God. For God will not give his glory to another, nor his praife to graven images, Ifa. xlii. 8. And because all that is proper to God is in the Holy Scripture afcribed unto Chrift the Son of God, therefore he is the true God, of the fame Eternity, Perfection, and Effence with the Father. And it is moft horrid Impiety with the Arians and Socinians to deny his Divinity.

T

Of GOD the HOLY GHOST.

HE Third Perfon in the Godhead is God the Holy Ghoft, who proceedeth equally from the Father and the Son. The Spirit of the Father is the Spirit of the Son, Rom. viii. 9. Gal. iv. 6, The Father fent the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghoft, in the Name of the Son, Joh. xiv. 26. And the Son fent the fame Comforter, even the Spirit of Truth from the Father, Joh. xv. 26. And because the Holy Spirit hath his Original from both the Father and the Son, he is the Third Perfon in Order, and is fent of both, and worketh from both.

AND the Holy Ghost is a Divine Perfon really diftin&t from the Father and the Son: For fuch perfonal Properties and Operations are attributed unto him in Holy Scripture, as are evident Demonstrations of a Perfon really fubfifting in the Godhead. The Holy Ghoft hath visibly appeared, once in a bodily Shape like a Dove, and another time in the Form of cloven Tongues like as of Fire. Luk. iii. 22. A&t. ii. 3, 4. He maketh interceffion for us with groanings, which cannot be uttered, Rom. viii. 26. He comforteth us in Tribulation, Joh. xiv. 16. And he worketh all Gifts and Graces, dividing to every man severally VOL. I'

as he will, I Cor. xii. 4, to 12. But these and fuch like Actions, which are attributed to the Holy Spirit, are proper to a Person, and do not belong to a bare Virtue. For what but a Perfon can visibly appear, affift us in our Prayers, and comfort us in Diftrefs? And who but a Divine Person can work and diftribute all Divine Graces at his own Pleasure ?

;

NAY there are fome perfonal Properties and Actions belonging to the Holy Ghost, which can in no wife be applied to the Father or the Son neither can they be faid to perform them by the Power within them: For the Holy Ghoft proceedeth from the Father, and is fent by the Father in the Name of the Son, Joh. xiv. 26. And he that proceedeth from the Father, and is fent by him, is not the Father. For how can any Perfon proceed from himself, or be fent by himfelf? And therefore the Holy Ghost is really diftinguifhed from the Father. The Holy Spirit likewife received of that, which is the Sons, and by receiving it glorified the Son, Joh. xvi. 15. But no Perfon can be faid to receive from himself that which is his own, and to glorifie himself by fo receiving: And therefore the Holy Spirit is rot the Son, but really diftinguished from him.

AND as the Holy Ghoft is a real Perfon fubfifting in the Godhead, and really diftinct from the Father and the Son; fo he is co-equal with them in all Glory and Perfections. For to him the Divine Effence, Properties, Works, Names and Worship, are in Scripture properly afcribed; and confequently he muft needs be true God.

THE Whole Divine Effence is communicated to the Holy Ghoft from the Father and the Son: For all Things which the Father hath are the Son's;

Son's; and of that which is the Son's the Holy Ghost received, Joh. xvi. 14, 15.

The Divine Properties alfo and Works are common to the Holy Ghoft with the Father and the Son. For the Holy Ghoft is eternal, being before all things created, Heb. ix. 14. Gen. i. 2. He is Omniprefent, being every where, and especially in the Hearts of the Faithful, Pfal. cxxxix. 7. Rom. viii. 9. 1 Cor. iii. 16. He is Omniscient, and fearcheth all things, even the deep things of God, I Cor. ii. 10. He is Omnipotent, and created all things, and ftill fuftaineth and preferveth all things, Pfal. xxxiii. 6, and civ. 30. He infpired the Prophets, and guided the Apostles into all Truth, and endued them with the Gift of Tongues, and with the Power of working Miracles, 2 Pet. i. 21. Act. ii. 4. And all these are Properties and Works, which belong to none but the true God.

THE Divine Names likewife are properly given unto the Holy Ghoft; for he is called Jehovah, which is the peculiar Name of the true God, Num. xii. 6. comp. with 2 Pet. i. 21. And he is exprefly said to be God; as 1 Cor. iii. 16. Know ye not, that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? A&. v. 3, 4. Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie unto the Holy Ghoft? Thou haft not lied unto men, but unto God.

AND laftly, The Divine Worship and Honour is to be rendered unto the Holy Ghoft; for in his Name are we to be baptized, Matth. xxviii. 19. And from him we must seek all Gifts and Graces, because he is the immediate Author of our San&tification, 1 Pet. i. 2. And confequently in him we are to believe and trust, and to him we ought

to render all other A&ts of Divine Worfhip: And therefore the Holy Ghoft is true and perfect God, co-equal with the Father and the Son in all Divine Perfections; and together with them is to be worshipped and glorified.
