Neither is there falvation in any other for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be faved, Acts iv. 12. But he hath done fufficient to fave us. And he needeth not the Affiftance of any to bring us unto Heaven. And if Chrift be able of himself to fave us, what need is there of any other Saviours? And they that set up any Creatures, whether Saints or Angels, as Saviours or Mediators with Christ, do in effect make Chrift an imperfe&t Saviour, and render that Glory to the Creatures, which is due to none but God. For no Creature can merit Salvation for us, nor make God propitious to us. But God accepteth us only in Chrift; and all that are faved, are faved by his Merits. And therefore we muft make Chrift alone our Saviour and Mediator, and not joyn any other Mediators with him, nor depend on our own Righteoufnefs as the meritorious Caufe of Salvation.

And

But yet we must be truly righteous according to the Gofpel, in order to be faved by the Righte oufness of Chrift. For though Chrift hath done all things neeedful on his Part to fave us : Yet Faith and Obedience to the Gospel are required on our Part as the Condition of Salvation. unless we believe in Christ, and obey his Laws, we have no Right to rely on his Merits for Salvation. For Chrift is the author of eternal falvation only unto them that obey him, Heb. v. 9. And fure then while Men continue in wicked Ways, they are incapable of obtaining Salvation through Christ. For though Chrift came to fave Sinners; yet it was on Condition that they repent of their Sins, and become new Creatures. And therefore if we would have Chrift to be our Saviour, we must serve him in Righteousness and true Holinefs. III. THE

III. THE Title of Chrift is given unto the Mediator by reason of his Office. And both Meffias and Chrift have the fame Signification. Melfias being interpreted is the Chrift, Joh. i. 41. For Meffias in the Hebrew Tongue, and Chrift in the Greek, fignifie the Anointed. And our Saviour is called Chrift, or the Anointed, because he was ordained of the Father to be a Prophet, Priest, and King, and furnished by the Holy Ghost with all Gifts and Virtues neceffary to perform those Offices. For as the Prophets fometimes, and the High-priests and Kings moft ufually among the Jews, were anointed, and by that Ceremony inaugurated into their refpective Offices: So our Saviour, who is the true Meffias, reprefented by those Types, was fpiritually anointed unto his three great Offices of Prophet, Priest, and King, which he was to execute for the full Accomplishment of our Redemption.

BUT though the Unction of the Types fitly represented the Anointing of our Saviour; yet the Types were anointed with material Oil: But our Saviour was anointed with the Holy Ghoft, and with the oil of gladnefs above his fellows, Acts x. 38. Heb. i. 9. And this anointing with the Holy Ghost denoteth the conferring on Chrift, according to his humane Nature, all Power and Gifts requifite to perform the great Work of our Redemption. For God gave not the Spirit by measure unto him, John iii. 34. but endued him with all Gifts and Graces in the higheft Degree. For it pleafed the Father (faith the Apoftle) that in him should all fullness dwell, Col. i. 19.

FTER the Explication of the Name Jefus, and the Title Chrift, it will be no great Digreffion here to prove, That Jefus is Chrift. Which is that main Article of our Faith, whereby our Religion is diftinguished from Judaifm. And most certain Evidence of holy Scripture there is for this great Article of our Faith. For if all things which were fore-told concerning Chrift, are fulfilled in Jefus of Nazareth, then he must needs be the Chrift. But all things fore-told concerning Christ are fulfilled in Jefus. Thus the Birth, Life, Doctrine, Miracles, Sufferings, and Exaltation of Jefus, exactly agreed with the Prophecies delivered in the Old Teftament concerning Chrift. And this will fully appear, by comparing the Event of things with the Prophecies.

Firft, THE Birth of Jefus agreed with the Prophecies of the Old Teftament. There were certain Circumstances concerning the Birth of Chrift foretold, as the Time and Place of his Birth, his Family, and his Adoration by the Wife Men.

THE

THE Time of Chrift's coming in the Flesh was foretold by Jacob in thefe Words, The Scepter fhall not depart from Judah, nor a Law-giver from between his Feet, until Shiloh come; that is, fome Relicks of Empire fhould remain in the Tribe of Judah, until the Meffias come, Gen. xlix. 10. And when Herod, an Idumaan, had ufurped the Kingdom of Judea, and tranflated the Scepter from Judah, then was Jefus, the true Meffias, born according to that Prophecy.

AND the Time prefixed by Daniel for the Advent of the Meffias is past, Dan. ix. 24, 25, 26, 27. For though it cannot certainly be determined when the Seventy Weeks here mentioned began or ended; yet 'tis certain from this Place, that the Meffias was to come before Jerufalem and the Temple were deftroyed, and before the Sacrifices ceafed. And fince these things are fulfilled, the Seventy Books of Daniel muft needs be expired. And confequently the Meffias is long fince come.

AND it was foretold both by Haggai and Malachi, that the Meffias fhould come while the fecond Temple of Jerufalem ftood, Hag. ii. 7, 9. The defire of all nations shall come, and I will fill this houfe with glory. The glory of this latter house fhall be greater than of the former, Mal. iii. 1. The Lord, whom ye feek, fhall fuddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, in whom ye delight, behold he fhall come. And Jefus the Meffias, who is called, The defire of all Nations, and The Messenger of the Covenant, was born while this fecond Temple flood, and appeared and taught in it, and by his Prefence made it more glorious than the Temple built by Solomon; which in refpe&t of Matter, Workmanship, and the Things contained in it, far excelled the other.

THE

THE Place of Chrift's Birth was clearly foretold by the Prophet Micah in thefe Words, But thou Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee fball he come forth unto me, that is to be ruler in Ifrael, Mic. v. 2. And Jefus, whom we believe to be the Meffias, was born in the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, Luk. ii. 4, 5, 6, 7.

THE Family alfo of Christ was foretold to be of the House of David. For God fwore with an oath to David, that of the fruit of his body he would raise up Chrift to fit on his throne, Pfal. cxxxii. II. A&. ii. 30. And the fame was prophefied by Ifaiah in thefe Words, And there fhall come forth a rod out of the ftem of Jeffe, and a branch shall grow out of his roots, Ifa. xi. 1. And accordingly our Lord Jefus was made of the feed of David, according to the flesh, Rom. i. 3. For Jofeph, his fuppofed Father, defcended from David by Solomon, as St. Matthew fheweth, Mat. i. And Mary, his Virgin-Mother, defcended from David by Nathan, as St. Luke declareth, Luk. iii.

THE Adoration likewise of Christ by the Wife Men, was foretold by the Prophet David, Pfal. lxxii. 10. The kings of Tarshish, and of the Ifles, fball bring prefents; the kings of Sheba and Seba hall offer gifts. And according to this Prophecy, while Jefus with his Parents continued yet at Bethlehem, certain Wife Men of the Eaft came publickly to Jerufalem to enquire for him who was born King of the Jews; and by the Conduct of a miraculous Star finding Jefus, the Prince whom they fought, at Bethlehem, they fell down and worshipped him, presenting him Gifts, Gold, Frankincenfe, and Myrrhe, Mat. ii. 10, 11.
