CHAP. LIX. Sin alienates from God. BEHOLD the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save: neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear, 2 But your iniquities have separated between you
and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you. 12 For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them. 14 And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity
18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, recompense to his enemies. 19 So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. 20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord.
Chap. LX. Future glories of the Church. ARISE, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. 2 For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross dark. ness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. 3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. 8 Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows ? 15 Whereas thou hast been forsaken and ħated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations. 16 And thou shalt know that I the Lord am thy Saviour, and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob. 17 For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron : I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors righteousness.
18 Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls salvation, and thy gates praise. 19 The sun shall be no more thy light by day, neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. 20 Thy sun shall no more go down, neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine ever. lasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended. 21 Thy people also shall be all righteous : they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified. 22 A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation : I the Lord will hasten it in his time.
CHAP. LXI. LXIII. Offices of Christ. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; 3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be cwled Trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. 10 I will greuily rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my
God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness.
1 Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozra ? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength ? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. 2 Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat ? 3 I have trodden the wine-press alone, and of the people there was none with me; for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. 5 And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold; therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury it upheld me.
Chaé. LXIV. Penitence and Prayer. Oh, that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence.
2 To make thy Hame known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence. 3 When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest, down, the mountains flowed down at thy. presence. 6 But we are all as an unclean thing ; 7 For thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us because of our iniquities. 8 But now, O Lord, thou art our father: we are the clo', and thou our potter, and we all are the hand. 9 Be not wroth very sore, O Lord, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people. 10 Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.
CHAP. LXV. The new Jerusalem. I am sought of them that asked not for me: I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.
2 I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way hat was not good, after their own thoughts : 12 Because when I cailed, ye did not answer ; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted
13 Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty : 14 Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart. 17 For behold, I create new heavens, and a new earth : and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. 18 But be ye glad, and rejoice for ever in that which I create : for behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. 23 They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble : for they are the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them. 25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the Lord.
Chap. LXVI. Comfort to the humble. Thus saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of
2 For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is
poor, and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. 10 Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her. 12 For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: 13 As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you : and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem. 19 And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them, unto the nations, and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles. 23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before saith the Lord. 24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me : for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched ; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.
THE PROPHET JEREMIAH.
Chap. II. Expostulation with Judah. Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 Go, and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord, I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine es. pousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown. 3 Israel was holiness unto the Lord, and the first fruits of his increase : all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the Lord. 9 Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the Lord, and with your children's children will I plead. 11 Hath a nation changed their gods,
