Isa. 9:16. For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed. vs. 13-21.

Isa. 17:10. Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips: 11. In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.

Isa. 24:5. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. 6. Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate : therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.

Isa. 30:9. That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD: 15. For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.

Isa. 31:6. Turn ye unto him from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted.

Isa. 43:22. But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel. 24. Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities. Isa. 51:17. Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury ; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out. vs. 18-20.

Isa. 63:17. O LORD, why hast thou made us to err from thy ways, and hardened our heart from thy fear?

Isa. 65:2. I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts; 3. A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; Jer. 2:5. Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

11. Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. 12. Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD. 13. For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

and thy backslidings shall reprove thee; know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

21. Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me? 27. They have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.

31. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel! a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee? 32. Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

Jer. 3:21. A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the LORD their God.

Jer. 5:19. When ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours. 23. But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. vs. 1-31; Jer. 11:9-17.

Jer. 6:30. Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the LORD hath rejected them. Ezek. 22:18.

Jer. 7:12. Go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel. vs. 13-34.

Jer. 8:5. Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return. 14. Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD. 15. We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble! vs. 1-22.

Jer. 10:20. My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is non to stretch forth my tent any more, and t set up my curtains. 21. For the pastors ar become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered. vs. 17-22

Jer. 12:7. I have forsaken mine house, 1 have left mine heritage; I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies.

Jer. 13:24. Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness. 25. This is thy lot, the por 17. Hast thou not procured this unto thy-tion of thy measures from me, saith the self, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD LORD: because thou hast forgotten me, and thy God, when he led thee by the way? 19. trusted in falsehood.

BACKSLIDERS.-BACKSLIDING OF ISRAEL.

Ezek. 11:21. As for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord GOD. vs. 1-21. [See Parable of the Vine, Ezek. 15.]

Jer. 14:7. O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name's sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee. 10. Thus saith the LORD unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the LORD doth not acept them; he will now remember their in-membered the days of thy youth, but hast quity, and visit their sins.

Jer. 15:1. Thus saith the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: ast them out of my sight, and let them go forth. vs. 2-14.

Jer. 18:13. Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath hard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing. 14. Will a man ave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold lowing waters that come from another place be forsaken? 15. Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to tumble in their ways from the ancient aths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast Ep: Jer. 19.

Jer. 32:31. This city hath been to me as a provocation of mine anger and of my fury From the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face, v.30.

Jer. 50:6. My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain tohill, they have forgotten their restingplace. Ezek. 2:3. And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this very day. 4. For they are impudent children and stiffhearted. I do send thee unto them; and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD. 5. And they, whether they will bear, or whether they will forbear, (for they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them. 6. And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house. 7. And thou shalt speak my words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear: for they are most rebellious. 8. But thou, son of man, hear what I say unto thee; Be not thou rebellious like that rebellious house: open thy mouth, and eat that I give thee.

Ezek. 56. She hath changed my judgments into wickedness more than the nations, and my statutes more than the countries that are round about her: for they have refused my judgments and my statutes, they have not walked in them. vs. 1-17.

Hos. 5:11. Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment. Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah as rottenness. vs. 1-15.

Hos. 6:4. O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away. 7. They like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me. vs. 4-11; Hos. 8:14; 9:1-17; 13:16.

Hos. 11:2. As they called them, so they went from them: 7. And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.
