THE MINISTRATION OF

PRIVATE BAPTISM OF CHILDREN
IN HOUSES.

THE Curates of every Parish hall often admonish the People, that they defer not the Baptifm of their Children longer than the fir ft or fecond Sunday next after their Birth, or other Holy-Day falling between, unless upon a great and reafonable caufe, to be upproved by the Curate.

And also they hall warn them, that without like great cause and necefity they procure not their Children to be baptizedat home in their houfes. But when need hall compel them fo to do, then Bap. tifm Jhall be adminiftered on this fashion;

First, let the Minister of the Parish (or, in his abfence, any other lawful Minifter that can be procured), with them that are prefent, call upon God, and fay the Lord's Prayer, and fo many of the Collects appointed to be faid before in the Form of Public Baptism, as the time and prefent exigence will suffer: And then, the Child being named by fome one that is prefent, the Minister fhall pour water upon it, faying these words.

Nbaptize thee, In the Name

of Father, and of the Son, and ofthe Holy Ghoft. Amen. Then all kneeling down, the Minifter Jhall give thanks unte God, and fay,

W molt merciful Father, that

And let them not doubt, but that

the Child fo baptized is lawfully and fufficiently baptized, and ought not to be baptized again. Yet nevertheless, if the Child, which is after this fort baptized, do afterward live, it is expedient, that it be brought into the Church; to the intent, that if the Minister of the fame Parish did himself baptize that Child, the Congregation may be certified of the true form of Baptim by him pr vately before ufed: In which cafe he jhall fay thus;

I

CERTIFY you, that according to the due and prefcribed Order of the Church, at fuch a time, and at fuch a place, before divers witneffes I baptized this Child.

But if the Child were baptized and forbid them not; for of fuch by any other lawful Minister, is the kingdom of God. Verity then the Minister of the Parish I fay unto you, Whofoever thall where the Child was born or not receive the kingdom of God christened hall examine and try as a little child, he thall not enwhether the Child be lawfully ter therein. With what matter was this Child baptized?

With what words was this Child baptized? And if the Minister fhall find, by the answers of fuch as bring the Child, that all things were done as they ought to be, then hall not he chriften the Child again, but shall receive him as one of the flock of true Christian People, Jaying thus;

CERTIFY you, that in this cafe all is well done, and according unto due order, concerning the baptizing of this Child; who being born in original fin, and in the wrath of God, is now, by the laver of regeneration in Baptifm, received into the num

ber of the children of God, and heirs of everlafting life: For our Lord Jefus Chrift doth not deny his grace and mercy unto fuch infants, but most lovingly doth call them unto him, as the holy Gofpel doth witness to our comfort on this wife;

THEY brought young child-to Chriß, that he fhould touch them: and his difciples rebuked thofe brought them. But when Jefus saw it, he was much difpleafed, and faid unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me,

BELOVED, ye hear in this Gofpel the words of our Saviour Chrift, that he commanded the children to be brought unto him; how he blamed thofe that would have kept them from him; how he exhorted all men to follow their innocency. Ye perceive how by his cutward genture and deed he declared his good will toward them; for he embraced them in his arms, he laid his hands upon them, and bleffed them. Doubt ye not that he hath likewite favourably therefore, but earnestly believe, received this prefent Infant; that he hath embraced him with the arms of his mercy; and (as he hath promised in his holy Word) will give unto him the blefling of eternal life, and make. him partaker of his everlasting thus perfuaded of the good will kingdom. Wherefore, we being by his Son Jefus Chrift, towards of our heavenly Father, declared this Infant, let us faithfully and devoutly give thanks unto him, and fay the Prayer which the Lord himfelf taught us:

UR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven: Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trefpafies, as we forgive them that trefpafs against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

And doft thou believe in the Holy Ghoft; the holy Catholic Church; the communion of faints; the remiflion of ins; the refurrection of the fleth; and everlasting life after death?" Anf. All this I fiedfafily believe.

And humbly we befeech thee to grant, that he being dead unto fin, and living unto righteoufnefs, and being buried with Chrift in his death, may crucify the old man, and utterly abolith the whole body of fin; and that as he is made partaker of the death of thy Son, he may also be partaker of his refurrection; fo that finally, with the refidue of thy holy Church, he may be an inheritor of thine everlafting kingdom, through Jefus Chrift our Lord. Amen. Then all standing up, the Minifter hall make this Exhortation to the Godfathers and Godmothers:

And that he may know these things the better, ye thall call upon him to hear Sermons; and chiefly ye fhall provide, that he may learn the Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the Ten Commandments in the vulgar tongue, and all other things which a Chriftian ought to know and believe to his foul's health; and that this Child may be virtuously brought up to lead a godly and a Chriftian life; remembering always, that Baptifm doth reprefent unto us our profeffion; which is, to follow the example of our Saviour Chrift, and be made like unto him; that as he died, and rofe again for us, fo fhould we, who are baptized, die from fin, and

WHEN any fuch Perfons, as are of Riper Years, are to be baptized, timely notice fhall be given to the Bishop, or whom he hall appoint for that purpofe, a week before at the least, by the Parents, or fome other difcreet Perfons; that fo due care may be taken for their Examination, whether they be fufficiently instructed in the principles of the Chriftian Religion; and that they may be exhorted to prepare themselves with Prayers and Fafting for the receiving of this Holy Sacrament.

And if they fhall be found fit, then the Godfathers and Godmothers (the People being affembled upon the Sunday or Holy-Day appointd) shall be ready to prefent them at the Font, immediately after the Second Lelon, either at Morning or Evening Prayer, as the Curate in his difcretion fhall think fit.

And Handing there, the Priest hall ask, Whether any of the Perfons here prefented he baptized, or no? If they hall anfwer No, then Jhall the Priest fay thus:

EARLY beloved, forafmuch as all men are conceived and born in fin; and that which is born of the fleth is fleth, and they that are in the fleth cannot please God, but live in in, committing many actual tranfgreflions; and that our Saviour Chrift faith, None can enter into the kingdom of God, except he be regenerate and born anew of

Water and of the Holy Ghoft; I befeech you to call upon God the Father, through our Lord Jefus Chrift, that of his bounteous goodnefs he will grant to theje Perfons that which by nature they cannot have; that they may be baptized with Water and the Holy Ghoft, and received into Chrift's holy Church, and be made lively members of the fame.

Then Shall the Priest fay,

Let us pray.

(And here all the Congregation Jhall kneel.)

Hear the words of the Gospel written by Saint John, in the third chapter, beginning at the firft verie.

HERE was a man of the

ALMIGHTY and everlafting Pharifees, named Nicode

of great mercy didft fave Noah and his family in the ark from perithing by water; and alfo didit fafely lead the children of Ifrael thy people through the Red Sea, figuring thereby thy holy Baptifm; and by the Baptifm of thy well. beloved Son Jefus Chrift in the river Jordan, didft fanctify the element of Water to the mystical wathing away of fin; We befeech thee, for thine infinite mercies, that thou wilt mercifully look upon these thy fervants; wail them, and fanctify them with the Holy Ghoft, that they, being delivered from thy wrath, may be received into the ark of Chrift's Church; and being ftedfaft in faith, joyful through hope, and rooted in charity, may fo pafs the waves of this troublefome world, that finally they may come to the land of everlafting life; there to reign with thee world without end, through Jefus

Christ our Lord. Amen.

LMIGHTY and immortal A God, the aid of all that need, the helper of all that flee to thee for fuccour, the life of them that believe, and the refurrection of the dead; We call upon thee for thefe Perfons, that they coming to thy holy Baptifin, may receive remiffion of their fins by fpiritual regeneration. Receive them, O Lord, as thou hatt promised by thy well-beloved Son, faying, Afk, and ye fhall receive; feek, and ye thall find; knock, and it thall be opened unto you: So give now unto us that afk; let us that feek, find; open the gate unto us that knock; that thefe Perfons may enjoy the everlafting benediction of thy heavenly wathing, and may come to the eternal kingdom which thou hati promised by Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then hall the People and up, and the Priest hall Jay,

thou art a teacher come from

faith unto him, How can a man
be born when he is old? can he
enter the fecond time into his
mother's womb, and be born?
Jefus anfwered, Verily, verily, I
fay unto thee, Except a man be
born of Water and of the Spirit,
he cannot enter into the kingdom
of God. That which is born of
the fleth is fleth; and that which
is born of the Spirit is fpirit.
Marvel not that I faid unto thee,
Ye must be born again. The

and thou heareft the found there-

After which he shall fay this
Exhortation following:
BELOVED, ye hear in this

Gofpel the exprefs words of our Saviour Chriff, That except a man be born of Water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Whereby ye may perceive the great neceffity of this Sacrament, where it may be had. Likewife, immediately before his afcenfion into heaven, (as we read in the last chapter of Saint Mark's Gofpel,) he gave command to his difciples, faying, Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gofpel to every creature. lle that believeth and is baptized, thall be faved; but he that believeth not, thall be damned. Which alfo theweth unto us the great benefit we reap thereby.
