Now the battle-day is past;
Now upon the further shore
Lands the voyager at last.

Father, in Thy gracious keeping
Leave we now Thy servant sleeping.

mp 2 There the tears of earth are dried;
There its hidden things are clear;
There the work of life is tried
By a juster Judge than here.

3 There the Shepherd, bringing home Many a lamb forlorn and strayed, Shelters each, no more to roam,

Where the wolf can ne'er invade.

4 There the penitents who turn
To the cross their dying eyes
All the love of Jesus learn
At His feet in Paradise.

m 5 There no more the powers of hell
Can prevail to mar their peace;
Christ the Lord shall guard them well,
He who died for their release.

[blocks in formation]

The former things are passed away.'

HERE is no night in heaven:

THE

In that blest world above

Work never can bring weariness,
For work itself is love.

There is no grief in heaven:

For all is perfect day;

And tears are 'mid those former things
Which all have passed away.

There is no sin in heaven,
Amid that blessed throng;
All holy is their spotless robe,
All holy is their song.

There is no death in heaven:
For they who gain that shore
Have won their immortality,

And they can die no more.

Lord Jesus, be our Guide;

O lead us safely on,

Till night and grief and sin and death.
Are past, and heaven is won.

'Let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan.'

HERE is a land of pure delight,

mf THE

mp

Where saints immortal reign;

Infinite day excludes the night,
And pleasures banish pain;

2 There everlasting spring abides,
And never-withering flowers:
Death, like a narrow sea, divides
This heavenly land from ours.

m 3 Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood
Stand dressed in living green;
So to the Jews old Canaan stood,
While Jordan rolled between.

mp 4 But timorous mortals start and shrink
To cross this narrow sea,

And linger, shivering on the brink,
And fear to launch away.

m 50 could we make our doubts remove-
Those gloomy doubts that rise-

mf

And see the Canaan that we love
With unbeclouded eyes,

6 Could we but climb where Moses stood,
And view the landscape o'er,

Not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood,
Should fright us from the shore.
