+ Magnificat. S. Luke 1. 46.

(This shall be faid or fung after the first Lefsson in the Evening Service.)

M

Y foul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his hand-maiden. * For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. F.

For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all

generations.

::

He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek.

He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath fent empty away.

He remembring his mercy, hath holpen his servant Ifrael: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his feed for ever. Glory be to the Father, &c.

As it was in the beginning, &c.

Or else this Psalm, except it be on the Nineteenth Day of the Month.

Paraphrafe on the MAGNIFICAT.

I joyfully praise God my Saviour: because he hath deigned to shew such regard to his Servant in her lowly station-For henceforth future Ages will pronounce me truly happy; fince he who is infinitely powerful and holy hath been pleased to bestow upon me this honour: tho' his kindness indeed extends to persons of every Nation and Condition that truly serve him--He hath

+ Magnificat and the Pfalm which follows after succeeds the Lesson properly as teftimonies of our Gratitude to God for the light of his Revelation.

† Pfalms of praise and thanksgiving to God as they are proper at all Times, so they are never more fuitable than when we are under a joyful sense of pardon and reconciliation with him."

wonderfully disappointed the expectations of the ambitious. He hath depressed the proud Rulers of the Earth, and exalted the lowly in Heart. - He hath filled those who hunger after Righteousness with the bounties of his Grace, but the rich in Spirit he hath rejected. He hath sent forth a Saviour to Ifrael as he promised to Abraham and his Seed.

* For behold from henceforth, &c. On this passage the Church of Rome seems to have founded, in fome measure, that adoration which she pays to the Virgin Mary; through a mistaken interpretation of the Word Blessed: which, in the Scriptures, when it relates to a human person, generally fignifies happy.

Cantate Domino. Pfalm 98.

"

Sing unto the Lord a new fong: for he hath done marvellous things.

With his own right hand, and with his holy arm: hath he gotten himself the victory.

The Lord declared his falvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the fight of the heathen.

:

He hath remembred his mercy and truth toward the house of Ifrael: and all the ends of the world have feen the salvation of our God.

:

Shew yourselves joyful unto the Lord, all ye lands: fing, rejoice, and give thanks.

Praise the Lord upon the harp: fing to the harp with a Pfalm of thanksgiving.

1

With trumpets also and shawms: Oshew yourselves joyful before the Lord the King.

Let the Sea make a noise, and all thatt herein is: the round world, and they that dwell therein.

Let the floods clap their hands, and let the hills be joyful together before the Lord: for he cometh to judge the earth. With righteousness shall he judge the world: and the people with equity.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

Then followeth the second Lesson taken out of the New Testament, and after that the Song of Simeon, as followeth.

Paraphrase on the CREED.

I believe that there is one God, the Almighty Father of all Men, the Creator of all Things. I believe also that Jesus Chrift (who appeared in Judea in the Reigns of the Roman Emperors, Augustus and Tiberius,) is his only Son, and our Lord-That he was conceived, and born of Mary a pure Virgin, of the lineage of David, by the Holy Spirit-that he underwent many fufferings at the time when Pontius Pilate was Governor of Judea, was at length fixed to a Cross, and died under that torture, that his body was buried, and his foul palled into the invisible State of Spirits departed.
