And promises to fet the fame forward to the uttermoft of our Powers. Providing that the Bithops, Abbots, Priors, and other Prelates and beneficed Men which els have adjoined themselves to us, bruik the Revenues of their Benefices during their Lifetimes, they fuftaining ad upholding the Miniftry and Minifters, as herein is fpecified, for the preaching of Word, and miniftring of the Sacraments.

But Knox, Spotifwood and Calderwood number them amongst the Subscribers to this Book of Discipline. The Mafter of Lindfay is added from Knox and Calderwood,

I. Doctrine.

We affirme that to be contrarious Doctrine to the Word, that Man has inventit and impofed upon the Consciencis of Men be Lawis, Coun

fallis and Conftitutions without the expreffe Command of Godis Word.

Of this Kynd ar Vowis of Chastitie, difgyfit Apparell, fuperftitious Obfervatioun of falling Dayis, Difference of Meatis for Conscience saik, Prayer for the Dead, calling upon Sanctis, with fic uther Inventiouns of Men. In this Rank ar holie Dayis inventit be Men, fic as Chriftimes, Circumcifion, Epiphania, Purificatioun and utheris fond Feaftis of our Ladie: With the Feaftis of the Apoftillis, Martyris and Virgins, with utheris quhilk we judge utterlie to be abolifheit furth of this Realme, because they have na Affurance in Godis Word. All Menteinaris of fic Abhominatiouns fuld be punishit with the civill Sword.

The Word is fufficient for our Salvatioun, and thairfoir all Thingis neidfull for us ar conteinit in it. The Scriptures fal be red in privie Houses for removing of this grofs Ignorance.

И. Sacramentis.

He Sacramentis of Neceffitie are joynit with the Word, quhilk ar twa onlie, Baptifme and the Tabill of the Lord. The preaching of the Word man preceid the Miniftratioun of the Sacramentis. In the dew Administratioun of the Sacramentis all Thingis fuld be done according to the Word, nothing being addit, nor zit diminifht. The Sacramentis fuld be minifterit efter the Order of the Kirk of Geneva. All Ceremoneis and Reittis inventit be Men fuld be

abolifheit, and the fympill Word followit in all Poyntis.

The Miniftratioun of the Sacramentis in na wayis fuld be gevin him in quhais Mouth God has not put the Word of Exhortatioun. In the Miniftration of the Tabill fum confortabil Places may be red of the Scriptures

III. Idolatrie.

LI Kynd of Idolatrie and Monumentis of Idolatrie, fuld be abolishit, fic as Places dedicat to Idolatrie and Relickis. Idolatrie is all Kynd of worshiping of God not conteinit in the Word, as the Mefs, Invocation of Sainctis, Adoratioun of Images, and all uther fic Thingis inventit be Man.

IV. The Miniftrie.

ane lawfull Vocatioun. The lawfull Vocatioun ftandeth in the Ele&tioun of the Peopill, Examinatioun of the Miniftric, and Admiffioun be thame baith. The extraordinar Vocatioun has ane uther Confideratione, feing it is wrocht only be God inwartlie in Menis Hartis.

No Minifter fuld be intrufed upon any particu lar Kirk without thair Confent; bot gif ony Kirk be negligent to elect, than the Superintendent with his Counfall fuld provyde anc qualifeit Man within fortie Dayis.
