Elijah raifeth the avidow's fon:

Chap. xvill.

9 Arife, get thee to Zarephath, which he longeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to furtain thee.

10 So he arofe, and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of flicks: and he called to her, and faid, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a veffel, that I may drink.

11 And as the was going to fetch it, he called to her, and faid, Bring me, I pray thee, a morfel of bread in thine hand.

12 And the faid, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a crufe: and, behold, I am gathering two ticks, that 1 may go in and drefs it for me and my fon,

that we may eat it, and die.

13 And Elijah faid unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou haft faid: but make me thereof a little cake firft, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy fon. 14 For thus faith the LORD God of Ifrael, The bartel of meal fhall not wafte, neither hall the crufe of oil fail, until the day that the LORD fendeth rain upon the earth.

15 And the went and did according to the faying of Elijah: and the, and he, and her houfe, did eat many days.

16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the crufe of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he fpake by Elijah.

17 And it came to pass after these things, that the fon of the woman, the miftrefs of the house, fell fick; and his fickness was fo fore, that there was no breath left in him.

18 And the faid unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? Art thou come unto me to call my fin to remem. brance, and to flay my fon?

19 And he faid unto her, Give me thy fon. And he took him out of her bofom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

20 And he cried unto the LORD, and faid, O LORD my God, haft thou alfo brought evil upon the widow with whom I fojourn, by flaying her fon!

21 And he ftretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and faid, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's foul come into him again.

22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the foul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah. faid, See, thy fon liveth.

24 And the woman faid to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth

[blocks in formation]

ND it came to pafs after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, faying, Go, fhew thyfelf unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

2 And Elijah went to fhew himself unto A

He reproveth Abab. hab: and there was a fore famine in Samaria. 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his houfe: (now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly;

4 For it was fo, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water :)

5 And Ahab faid unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks; peradventure we may find grafs to fave the Forfes and mules alive, that we lofe not all the beafts.

6 So they divided the land between them, to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell 7. And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, on his face, and faid, Art thou that my lord Elijah?

8 And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is bere.

9 And he faid, What have I finned, that thou wouldeft deliver thy fervant into the hand of Ahab, to flay me?

10 As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kindgom, whither my lord hath not fent to feek thee; and when they faid, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

11 And now thou fayeft, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

12 And it shall come to pafs, as foon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD thall carry thee whither i know not; and fo when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall flay me: but I thy fervant fear the LORD from my youth.

13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel flew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD'S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall flay me. 14 And now thou fayeft, Go, tell thy lord,

15 And Elijah faid, As the LORD of hofts liveth, before whom I ftand, I will furely thew myfelf unto him to-day.

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 And it came to pafs, when Ahab faw Elijah, that Ahab faid unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Ifrael?

18 And he answered, I have not troubled Ifrael; but thou, and thy father's houfe, in that ye have forfaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou haft followed Baalim,

19 Now therefore fend, and gather to me all Ifrael unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fitty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.

20 So Ahab fent unto all the children of Ifracl, and gathered the prophets together

unto mount Carmel.

21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and faid, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the peo. ple answered him not a word.

22 Then faid Elijah unto the people, 1, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

Elijah convinceth

Baal's prophets. 40 And Elijah faid unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them efcape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and lew them there.

I. KINGS. 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will drefs the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and pat no fire under:

24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD and the God that anfwereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and faid, It is well spoken.

25 And Elijah faid unto the prophets of Baal, Choose ye one bullock for yourselves, and drefs it firft; for ye are many and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under. 26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dreffed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that anfwered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

27 And it came to pafs at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and faid, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is purfuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he fleep. eth, and muit be awaked.

28 And they cried aloud, and cut themfelves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. 29 And it came to pafs, when midday was part, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening facrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to anfwer, nor any that regarded.

30 And Elijah faid unto all the people,

Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

31 And Elijah took twelve ftones according to the number of the tribes of the fons of Ja cob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, faying, Ifrael fhall be thy name:

32 And with the tones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of feed.

33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and faid, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt-facrifice, and on the wood.

34 And he faid, Do it the fecond time. And they did the fecond time. And he faid. Do if the third time. And they did it the third time.

35 And the water ran round about the altar, and he filled the trench alfo with water.

36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening facrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and faid, LORD God of Abraham, Ifaac, and of Ifrael, let it be known this day that thou art God in Ifrael, and that I am thy fervant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORE God, and that thou haft turned their heart back again.

38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and confumed the burnt-facrifice, and the wood, and the ftones, and the daff, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

39 And when all the people faw it, they fell on their faces; and they faid, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

41 ¶ And Elijah faid unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a found of abundance of rain.

42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he caft himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,

43 And faid to his fervant, Go up now, look toward the fea. And he went up, and looked, and (aid, There is nothing. And he faid, Go again feven times.

44 And it came to pafs at the feventh time, that he faid, Behold, there arifeth a little cloud out of the fea, like a man's hand. And he faid, Go up, fay unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain ftop thee not.

45 And it came to pafs in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

46 And the hand of the LORD was on Eli. jah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

CHAP. XIX.

2 Then Jezebel fent a meffenger unto Eli-
jah, faying, So let the gods do to me, and more
alfo, if I make not thy life as the life of one of
them by to-morrow about this time.

3 And when he faw that, he arofe, and went for his life, and came to Beer-fheba, which be longeth to Judah, and left his fervant there.

4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and fat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and faid, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not bet. ter than my fathers.

5 And as he lay and flept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and faid unto him, Arife and eat.

6 And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a crufe of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

7 And the angel of the LORD came again the fecond time, and touched him, and faid, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.

8 And he arofe, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doeft thou here, Elijah?

10 And he faid, I have been very jealous fos the LORD God of hots: for the children of Ifrael have forfaken thy coverant, thrown down thine altars, and flain thy prophets with the fword; and I, even I only, am left; and they leek my life, to take it away,

11 And he laid, Go forth, and ftand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD patted by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:

12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a ftill fmall voice.

13 And it was jo, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and faid, What doest thou here, Elijah? 14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hotts: because the children of Ifrael have forfaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and flain thy prophets with the fword; and I, even 1 only, am left; and they feek my life, to take it away.

15 And the LORD faid unto him, Go, retura on thy way to the wilderness of Damafcus: and when thou comeft, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:

16 And Jehu the fon of Nimthi fhalt thou anoint to be king over Ifrael: and Elisha the fon of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.

17 And it hall come to pafs, that him that efcapeth the fword of Hazael fhall Jehu ilay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu fhall Elisha day.

18 Yet I have left me feven thousand in Ifrael, all the au es which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth whien natuu kiffed him.

19 So he departed thence, and found Elisha the fon of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth and Elijah paffed by him, and cait his mantle upon him.

20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and faid, Let me, I pray thee, kifs my father and my mother, and then I will tow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?

21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, an flew them, and boiled their flesh with the inftruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arofe, and went after Elijah, and miniftered unto him.

CHAP. XX.

1 Ben-badad befiegeth Samaria. 13 The Sy. rians are flain. 31 Abab difmifeth Ben badad: 42 the prophet reproveth him.

A all his hott together, and there were ND Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered thirty and two kings with him, and horfes and chariots; and he went up and befieged Samaria, and warred against it.

2 And he fent messengers to Ahab king of Ifrael into the city, and faid unto him, Thus faith Ben-hadad,

3 Thy filver and thy gold is mine; thy wives alfo and thy children, even the good. lieft, are mine.

4 And the king of Ifrael anfwered and faid, My lord, O king, according to thy faying, I am thine, and all that I have.

s And the meffengers came again, and faid, Thus fpeaketh Ben-hadad, faying, Although I

have fent unto thee, faying, Thou shalt delfver me thy filver and thy gold, and thy wives and thy children;

6 Yet I will fend my fervants unto thee to-morrow about this time, and they hail fearch thine house, and the houses of thy fervants; and it thall be, that what foever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.

7 Then the king of Ifrael called all the elders of the land, and faid, Mark, I pray you, and fee how this man feeketh mifchief: for he fent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my filver, and for my gold, and I denied him not.

8 And all the elders and all the people faid unto him, Hearken not unto him, nor confent. 9 Wherefore he faid unto the meffengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didit fend for to thy fervant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the meifengers departed, and brought him word again.

10 And Ben-haded fent unto him, and faid, The gods do fo unto me, and more alfo, if the duftof Samaria shall furtice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.

11 And the king of Ifrael anfwered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.

12 And it came to pass when Ben-hadad heard this meffage, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he faid unto his fervants, Set yourselves in array. And they fet themselves in array against the city. 13 And, behold, there came a prophet unto

King of tirael, faying, Thus faith the LORD, Haft thou feen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou fhait know that I am the LORD.

14 And Ahab faiú, By whom? And he said, Thus faith the LORD, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he fald, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.

15 Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, even all the children of Ifrael, being seven thousand.

16 And they went out at noon. But Benhadad was drinking himself drunk in the pa vilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.

17 And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out firft; and Ben-hadad fent out, and they told him, faying, There are men come out of Samaria.

18 And he faid, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.

19 So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.

20 And they flew every one his man: and the Syrians ded; and Ifracl purfued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria elcaped un

an horse with the horsemen.

21 And the king of Ifrael went out, and fmote the horfes ard chariots, and flew the Syrians with a great flaughter.

22 And the prophet came to the king of Ifrael, and faid unto him, Go, ftrengthen

Ahab reproved.

I. KINGS.

The prophet flain. thyfelf, and mark, and fee what thou doeft: from him, a lion found him, and flew him. for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.

23 And the fervants of the king of Syria faid unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were ftronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and furely we shall be ftronger than they.

24 And do this thing; Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put cap. fains in their rooms:

25 And number thee an army, like the army that thou haft loft, horfe for horfe, and chariot for chariot and we will fight against them in the plain, and furely we shall be Aronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did fo.

26 And it came to pafs at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Ifrael. 27 And the children of Ifrael were number. ed, and were all pretent, and went againit them and the children of Ifrael pitched before them like two little flocks of kids: but the Syrians filled the country.

28 And there came a man of God, and fpake unto the king of Ifrael, and faid, Thus faith the LORD, Because the Syrians have faid, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye fhall know that I am the LORD.

20 And they pitched one over against the other feven days. And so it was, that in the

feventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Ifrael flew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day.

30 But the reft fled to Aphek, into the city: and there a wall fell upon twenty and feven thousand of the men that were left. And Ben- a hadad fled and came into the city, into an inner

chamber.

31And his fervants faid unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the houfe of Ifrael are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put fackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Ifrael, peradventure he will fave thy

life.

32 So they girded fackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Ifrael, and faid, Thy fervant Ben-hadad faith, I pray thee, let me live. And he faid, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.

33 Now the men did diligently obferve whe. ther any thing would come from him, and did haftily catch it and they faid, Thy brother Ben-hadad. Then he faid, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.

34 And Ben-hadad faid unto him, The cities which my father took from thy father, I will reftore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damafcus, as my father made in Samaria. Then faid Ahab, I will fend thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and fent him away.

35 And a certain man of the fons of the prophets faid unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refufed to fmite him."

36 Then faid he unto him, Because thou hart not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as 1oon as thou art departed from me, a lion thall flay thee. And as foon as he was departed

37 Then he found another man, and faid, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man fmote him, fo that in fmiting he wounded him.

38 So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and difguised himself with athes upon his face.

39 And as the king paffed by, he cried unto the king; and he faid, Thy fervant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a mian turned afide, and brought a man unto me, and faid, Keep this man: if by any means he be miting, then thall thy life be for his life, or eife thou shalt pay a talent of filver.

40 And as thy fervant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Ifrael faid anto him, So all thy judgment be; thyself haft decided it.

41 And he hated, and took the athes away from his face: and the king of Ifrael difcerned him, that he was of the prophets.

42 And he faid unto him, Thus faith the JORD, Becaufe thou hart let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter deftruction, therefore thy lite thall go for his life, and thy people for his people.

43 And the king of Ifrael went to his houfe heavy and difpleafed, and came to Samaria. CHAP. XXI.

Ahab denied Naboth's vineyard. 5 Fezebel
caufeth Naboth to be condemned. 17 Elijah
denounceth judgments against Ahab and
Jezebel.

AND it came to pass after these things, that
Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard,
which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of
Ahab king of Samaria.

2 And Ahab fpake unto Naboth, faying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for garden of herbs, because it is near unto my houfe: and I will give thee for it a better vine yard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.

And Naboth faid to Ahab, The LORD for. bid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.

4 And Ahab came into his houfe heavy and difpleafed because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had fpoken to him; for he had faid, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And helaid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.

5 But Jezebel his wife came to him, and faid unto him, Why is thy fpirit fo fad, that thou eateft no bread?

6 And he faid unto her, Because I fpake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and faid unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or elfe if it please thee, I will give thee another vine. yard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard.

7 And Jezebel his wife faid unto him, Doft thou now govern the kingdom of Ifrael ! Arise and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry; I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.

8 So the wrote letters in Ahab's name, and fealed them with his feal, and fent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, dwelling with Naboth.

9 And the wrote in the letters, faying, Proclaim a faft, and fet Naboth on high among the people;

11 And the men of his city, even the elders, and the nobles who were the inhabitants In his city, did as Jezebel had fent unto them, and as it was written in the letters which the had fent unto them.

12 They proclaimed a faft, and fet Naboth on high among the people.

13 And there came in two men, children of

Belial, and fat before him: and the men of Belial witneffed against him, even againft Naboth, in the prefence of the people, faying, Naboth did blafpheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with ftones, that he died.

14 Then they fent to Jezebel, faying, Naboth is ftoned, and is dead.

15 And it came to pafs, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was ftoned, and was dead, that Jezebel faid to Ahab, Arife, take poffeffion of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead.

16 And it came to pafs, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take poffeffion of it.

17 And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, faying,

18 Arife, go down to meet Ahab king of Ifrael, which is in Samaria: behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he is gone down to poffefs it.

19 And thou shalt fpeak unto him, faying, Thus faith the LORD, Haft thou killed, and alfo taken poffeffion? And thou shalt fpeak unto him, faying, Thus faith the LORD, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth Thall dogs lick thy blood, even thine.

20 And Ahab faid to Elijah, Haft thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee: becaufe thou haft fold thyfelf to work evil in the fight of the LORD,

21 Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy pofterity, and will cut off from Ahab him that piffeth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Ifrael,

22 And will make thine houfe like the house of Jeroboam the fon of Nebat, and like the houfe of Baafha the fon of Ahijah, for the provocation wherewith thou hatt provoked me to anger, and made Ifrael to fin.

23 And of Jezebel aifo fpake the LORD, fay. ing, The dogs fhall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.

24 Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs thall eat; and him that dieth in the field fhall the fowls of the air eat.

25 But there was none like unto Ahab, which did fell himself to work wickednefs in the fight of the LORD, whom Jezebel his wife ftirred up.

26 And he did very abominably in follow. ing idols, according to all things as did the Amorites, whom the LORD caft out before the children of Ifrael.

27 And it came to pafs, when Ahab heard thofe words, that he rent his clothes, and put fackcloth upon his Heth, and fatted, and lay in fackcloth, and went foftly.

28 And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying.

Abab flain.

29 Seeft thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself be fore me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his fon's days will I bring the evil upon his house.

AND they continued three years without

war between Syria and Ifrael.

2 And it came to pafs in the third year, that Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came down to the king of Ifrael.

3 And the king of Ifrael faid unto his fervants, Know ye that Ramoth in Güead is ours, and we be ftill, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria?

4 And he faid unto Jehoshaphat, Wilt thou go with me to battle to Ramoth-gilead? And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Ifrael, I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses."

5 And Jehoshaphat faid unto the king of Ifrael, Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD to-day.

6 Then the king of Ifrael gathered the pro phets together, about four hundred men, and faid unto them, Shall I go against Ramoth-gil. ead to battle, or thall I forbear! And they said, Go up; for the LORD fhall deliver it into the hand of the king.
