PREFACE.

THE lectures contained in this little volume were delivered at St. Michael's, Cornhill, and at St. Mary Abbotts, Kensington, as part of the work of the Church Historical Society. Their intention is to set forth in a definite manner the position of the Church of England in relation to some important points on which changes were made at the time of the English Reformation, such changes being declared by opponents of the Church of England to have imperilled or destroyed the Catholicity of our Church. In some cases it has been found impossible to avoid the language of controversy; for to show the uncatholic character of adverse

claims is a part of the process of maintaining our own Catholicity. But the aim throughout is to show the solidity of the basis on which the Church of England stands as a true part of the Catholic Church of Christ on earth.

The lectures can be obtained separately, as Numbers II to VI of the Church Historical Society's Tracts.

G. F. STEPNEY,

Chairman of the Committee of the
Church Historical Society.
