O most gracious Lord, every day have I had reason to bless thy holy name for all the comforts and pleasures thou hast vouchsafed me; but above all, my God, do I now kneel and prostrate my spirit before thee, in humble thanks for thy un

speakable mercy in enabling me, by the assistance of thy grace, to subdue the evil feelings to which I was fast giving way, and to conquer the efforts making by the powers of darkness for my destruction: O my Father, how awful is the gloom that conscious wickedness spreads over the soul; how desolating the sense of being estranged from thy favour! In the dark and dreary night of guilt I called upon thee, and mercifully didst thou incline thine ear unto my cry; thou badest the day-spring from on high to shine upon me; in thy light I saw light. I discerned the hatefulness of my sin, I abhorred it; and thou gavest me strength to put it far from me. O gracious Lord, how exquisite is the sense of restored communion with thee; how fairer all the fair works of thy creation appear now that I can look on them in the renewed spirit of innocence and love. Keep me, O Lord, safe under the covert of thy wings, guard me as "the apple of the eye," hold up my steps that I slip not, and fill my heart with that grateful sense of thy mercy and goodness, that my earnest endeavour and happiness may be to please thee always, and to walk in thy way, and do thy will. DEVOTIONAL EXERCISES IN SICKNESS.

"He that is our God is the God of Salvation, and unto God the Lord belong the issues from death."-Ps. lxviii.

Every stage of life, my dear young friends, has its troubles and its trials sent us in proportion to our capacity for bearing them, to purify and fit us for a better state of existence. Some of these troubles and trials, however, are common alike to us all; and among them may be reckoned sickness, that seemingly cruel destroyer of all our most innocent enjoyments. It is truly said, "Man cometh forth as a flower;" and like a flower he is subject to untimely blight. How often do we see the young languishing under diseases, the seeds of which they may have inherited from their birth. Consumption, scrofula, spinal affections, and other forms of suffering, dreadful for fond parents to contemplate, are yet frequently the appointed mediums through which our heaveuly Father in mercy calls many away, ere they are tainted by the sins, or corroded by the cares of a guilty and sorrowing world.

gence that has supplied them, and robbed those that are in need of the comforts they might have derived from my superfluities.

9. I have too often given way to an angry and contentious spirit. I have lost sight of the example of my blessed Lord, who "when he was reviled, reviled not again." I have forgotten the need I have of forgiveness myself, and have published and magnified the faults of others, when I ought rather to have been deploring my own.

10 I have looked with an envious eye upon the goods and prosperity of others. I have not considered how much more of all things I possess than I deserve, and I have desired more the riches which "make to themselves wings and fly away," than to lay up treasure in heaven, that where my treasure is there may my heart be also.

O gracious Father, forgive me my blindness and hardness of heart; illumine my understanding and purify my will; and give me a new spirit, that I may walk in thy statutes, and keep thine ordinances, and do them. O mercifully blot out my past offences, and make me to hate all things that are evil in thy sight, striving incessantly to please thee, and to draw nearer to thee, till at the last I may be received into thy eternal mansions, where sin and sorrow are no more, through the way ap pointed in the redemption of the world by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
