Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Matt. v. 5.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matt. xi. 29.

The meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. Psalm xxxvii. 11.

The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things. Psalm xii. 3.

Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched-forth necks and wanton eyes:-therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion. Isa. iii. 16, 17.

The day of the Lord of Hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low. Isa. ii. 12.

Deliverance from Famine and Distress promised.

In famine he shall redeem thee from death. Job v. 20.

Behold the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Psalm xxxiii. 18, 19.

They shall not be ashamed in the evil time; and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. Psalm xxxvii. 19.

He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. Psalm cvii. 9.

Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God. Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. Ps. cxlvi. 5-7.

At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh. Job v. 22.

Famine and Distress threatened.

The Lord hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land. 2 Kings viii. 1,

Their sons and their daughters shall die by famine. Jer. xi. 22.

They shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence. Jer. xlii. 17.

Her (Babylon's) plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine. Rev. xviii. 8.

There shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Matt. XXIV. 7. 8.

I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine. Jer. xiv. 12.

When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry lands springs of water. Isaiah xli. 17, 18.

I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you. And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen. Ezek. xxxvi. 29, 30.

Wisdom and Honour.

When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul: discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee, to deliver thee from the way of the evil man. Prov. ii. 10-12.

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. Length of days is in her right hand, and in her left hand riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. Prov. iii. 13, 16, 17. The wise shall inherit glory. Prov. iii. 35.

Exalt wisdom, and she shall promote thee; she shall bring thee to honour when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace; a crown of glory shall she deliver unto thee. Prov. iv. 8, 9.

A third part of thee shall die with the pestilence, and with famine they shall be consumed in the midst of thee. Ezek. v. 12.

All the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine shall consume the land. And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very grievous. Gen. xli. 30, 31.

Folly and Shame.

He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him. Prov. xviii. 13.

They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame: and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought. Job viii. 22.

The prosperity of fools shall destroy them. Prov. i. 32.

But shame shall be the promotion of fools. Prov. iii. 35.

Wisdom is profitable to direct. Eccles. x. 10.

Solomon prayed thus: Lord, give thy servant an understand ing heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad. 1 Kings iii. 9. And the speech pleased the Lord; (ver. 10.) and God said, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life, neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine ene.. mies, but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment, behold I have done according to thy words; lo! I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches and honour. 11-13, ver.

Wisdom is good with an inheritance; and by it there is profit to them that see the sun. For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life. Eccles. vii.

The foolish plucketh it down with her hands. Prov. xiv. 1.

Woe to them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight. Isa. v. 21.

Their folly shall be manifest to all men. 2 Tim. iii. 9.

Shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever. Obad. x.

Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom. Prov. xv. 21.

When pride cometh, then cometh shame. Prov. xi. 2.

Every one that heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand; and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell: and great was the fall of it. Matt. vii. 26, 27.

His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins. He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray. Pro. v. 22, 23.

Riches and Plenty promised.

The smell of my Son is as the smell of a field, which the Lord hath blessed. Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine. Gen. xxvii. 27, 28.

If ye hearken to these judg ments, and keep and do them, the Lord thy God will bless the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. Deut. vii. 12, 13.

If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God: blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field: blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep; blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. The Lord shall command the blessing upon thee in thy store-houses; the Lord shall open upon thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand; and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow. Deut. xxviii. 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12.

They shall call the people unto the mountain; there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall suck of the abundance of the seas, and of treasures hid in the sand. Deut. xxxiii. 19.

The Lord thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy

Poverty & Distress threatened.

Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies, which the Lord shalt send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things. Deut. xxviii. 48.

Thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, which the Lord thy God hath given thee, in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee. Deut. xxviii. 53.

Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten: your gold and silver is cankered, and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire: ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Jas. v.2, 3.

The drunkard and the glutton. shall come to poverty. Prov. xxiii. 21.

He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come

body, and in the fruit of thy upon him. Prov. xxviii. 22. eattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good. Deut. xxx. 9.

He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly, and suffereth not their cattle to decrease. Psalm cvii. 38.

Thou shalt lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks, and shalt have plenty of silver. Job xxii. 24, 25.

Wealth and riches shall be in his house, and his righteousness endureth for ever. Psal. cxii.3.

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase; so shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. Prov. iii. 9, 10.

In the house of the righteous is much treasure. Prov. xv. 6.

He that tilleth his ground shall have plenty of bread. Prov. xxviii. 19.

I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the Lord, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel. Isaiah xlv. 3.

And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance. Zech. xiv. 14.

So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man. Prov. vi. 11.

There is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. Prov. xi. 24.

He that followeth after vain persons, shall have poverty enough. Prov. xxviii. 19.

The drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. Prov. xxiii. 21.

The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked. Prov. iii. 33.

Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty. Prov. xx. 13.

I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; when your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. Prov.i. 26, 27.

I will send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings; yea, I have cursed them already. Mal. ii. 2.

Iwill bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the Lord. Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord's wrath. Zeph. i. 17, 18.
