Charity to the Poor commended.

The

Blessed it he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies. The

Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness. Psl. xli. 1-3.

There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. Prov. xi. 24, 25.

He that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he. Prov. xiv.

21.

He that hath pity upon the poor, lendeth unto the Lord, and that which he giveth will he pay him again. Prov. xix.

17.

He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor. Prov. xxii. 9.

The liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand. Isa. xxxii. 8.

If thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness shall be as the noon day. And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make thy bones fat: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. Isa. lviii. 10, 11.

He that giveth to the poor, shall not lack. Prov. xxviii. 27.

He that hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God. Ezek, xviii. 7, 9.

Sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. Mark x. 21.

Give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you. Luke xi. 41.

When thou makest a feast, call the poor, and maimed, the lame, the blind: and thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee; for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. Luke xiv. 13, 14.

Cornelius feared God with all his house, and gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway. He saw in a vision evidently, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius. And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord ? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God. Acts x. 2-4.

He that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse. Prov. xxviii. 27.

He that hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, and hath not restored the pledge; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him. Ezek. xviii. 12, 13.

No covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Eph. v. 5.

Thefts, covetousness, &c. All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. Mark vii. 22, 23.

The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined. For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the Lord abhorreth. Ps. x. 2, 3.

Thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness. Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning Jehoiakim. He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem. Jer. xxii. 17-19.

Well doing approved and rewarded.

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? Gen. iv. 7. What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that

Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, lest my fury come forth

he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. Ps. xxxiv. 12-14.

Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore. Ps. xxxvii. 3—27.

Blessed is the man that doeth this, that keepeth his hand from doing any evil. Isaiah lvi. 2.

Blessed is that servant, whom his Lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, that he shall make him ruler over all his goods. Matt. xxiv. 46, 47.

By patient continuance in well-doing, seek for glory and honour and immortality. Rom. ii. 7.

Glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good; to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile. Rom. ii. 10.

Let us not be weary in welldoing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. Gal.

vi. 9.

Whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. Eph. vi. 8.

Let them that suffer according to the will of God, commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator. 2 Pet. iv. 19.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord; and he delighteth in his way. Ps. xxxvii. 23.

like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings. Jer. iv. 4.

Evil doers shall be cut off. Psalm xxxvii. 9.

The Lord shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness. 2 Sam. iii. 29.

The face of the Lord is against them that do evil. 1 Pet. iii. 12.

The Lord is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words; but will rise against the house of the evil doers. Isaiah xxxi. 1, 2.

The seed of evil doers shall never be renowned. Isa. xiv. 20.

I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings. Hos. iv. 9.

Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile. Rom. ii. 9.

Thy way and thy doings have procured these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth into thine heart. Jer. iv. 18.

There shall be no reward to the evil man. Prov. xxiv. 20.

Deliverance promised to the Objects of unholy Hatred.

The Lord thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and to give up thine enemies before thee. Deut. xxiii. 14.

I will deliver thee (Hezekiah) and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria. Isa. xxxviii.

Hear the word of the Lord, ye that tremble at his word: Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name's sake, said, Let the Lord be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed. Isa. lxvi. 5.

Be not afraid of their faces; for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Jer. i. 8.

I will deliver thee in that day saith the Lord: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid. For I will surely deliver thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord. Jeremiah xxxix. 17, 18.

Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee. Dan. vi. 16.

Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for behold your reward is great in heaven. Luke vi. 22, 23.

Threatenings against those who indulge in Hatred.

Evil shall slay the wicked; and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. Ps. xxxiv. 21.

I will lay thy cities waste, and thou (Mount Seir) shalt be desolate, and thou shalt know that I am the Lord. Because thou hast had a perpetual hatred. Ezek. xxxv. 4, 5.

Whosoever hateth his brother, is a murderer; and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 1 John iii. 15.

I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me. Deut. xxxii. 41.

Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them. Psalm lv. 15.

I will plague them that hate him (the righteous). Psalm lxxxix. 23.

Howl ye; for the day of the Lord is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. Isa. xiii. 6.

The Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation. Psalm cxlix. 4.

With righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth. Isa. xi. 4.

The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. Isa. xxix. 19.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon ine, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meck. Isa. lxi. 1.

Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which hath wrought his judgment, seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be that ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger. Zeph. ii. 3.

The ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. Peter iii. 4.

The Proud and Haughty threatened.

They are poor, and miserable, and wretched, and blind, and naked. Rev. iii. 17.

I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. Isa. xii. 11.

A man's pride shall bring him low. Prov. xxix. 23.

By his understanding he smiteth through the proud. Job xxvi. 12.

He shall bring down their pride, together with the spoil of their hands. Isa. xxv. 11.

Those that walk in pride, he (God) is able to abase. Dan. iv. 37.

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Prov. xvi. 18.

When pride cometh, then cometh shame. Prov. xi. 2.

Every one that is proud is an abomination to the Lord. Prov. xvi. 5.

Thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down. 2 Sam. xxii. 28.

Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments. Psl. cxix. 21.
