heard from the beginning, That we should love one another. Let us not love in word, but in deed, and in truth. This is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. 1 John iii. 11, 18, 23.

Now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. 2 John 5.

If any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, then the elders of the city shall send and fetch him, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. Deut. xix. 11, 12.

To desire and seek Peace with all Men, commanded.

Seek peace, and pursue it. Psl. xxxiv. 14.

Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house, lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee. Prov. xxv. 17.

Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Love peace. Zech. viii. 19.

Blessed are the peace makers, for they shall be called the children of God. Resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. Matt. v. 9, 39

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Rom. xii. 18.

Let us therefore follow after

The Evil of Strife, Contention and War, and Threatenings against those who delight in them.

Scatter thou the people that delight in war. Psl. lxviii. 30.

Devise not evil against thy neighbour. The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked. Prov. iii. 29, 33.

He that is angry with his brother without a cause, shall be in danger of the judgment. Matt. v. 22.

Thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that make my people err, that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace: they even prepare war, therefore night shall be unto them: the day shall be dark over them. Mic. iii. 5, 6.

Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation. Matt. xii. 25.

As coals are to burning coals,

the things which make for and wood to fire, so is a conpeace. Rom. xiv. 19.

tentious man to kindle strife. His wickedness shall be shewn before the whole congregation. Prov. xxvi. 21, 26.

Woe to that man by whom offence cometh! Matt. xviii. 7. Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off. Psl. ci. 5.

Wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly Job v. 2.

It is honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling. Prov. xx. 3.

From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, the friendship of this world is enmity against God. James iv. 1, 4.

The works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: wrath, strife. They which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Gal. v. 19-21.

Thus saith the Lord God, Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, I will stretch out mine hand upon the Philistines, and destroy the remnant of the coasts. Ezek. xxv. 15, 16.

The evils of Sloth, and Threatenings against Idleness.

He that sleepeth in harvest, is a son that causeth shame. Prov. X. 5.

How long wilt thou sleep, O

consider her ways, and be wise: which, having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. Prov. vi. 6-8.

Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work. Exod. XX. 9.

In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou know est not whether shall prosper, either this or that; or whether they both shall be alike good. Eccl. xi. 6.

Let him that stole, steal no more; but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Eph. iv. 28.

This we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. 2 Thes. iii. 10-12.

Study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you. 1 Thes. iv. 11.

False and profane Swearing forbidden.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not him guilt

sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep; so shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man. Prov. vi. 9-11.

The slothful shall be under tribute. Prov. xii. 24.

By much slothfulness the building decayeth, and through idleness of the hands, the house droppeth through. Eccl. x. 18.

Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger. Prov. xix. 15.

He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich. Prov. xxi. 17.

The way of the slothful man is as an hedge of thorns. Prov. xv. 19.

Threatenings against false and profane Swearers.

I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and them that worship the host of heaven;

less that taketh his name in vain. and them that worship and that Exod. xx. 7.

Thou shalt not profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord. Lev. xviii. 21.

Because of swearing the land mourneth. Jer. xxiii. 10.

Let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oaths: for all these are things that I hate, saith the Lord. Zech. viii. 17.

I say unto you, Swear not at all: neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Matt. v. 34-37.

Above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea, be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. Jas. v. 12.

swear by the Lord, and that swear by Malcham. Zeph. i. 4, 5.

Every one that sweareth shall be cut off. Zech. v. 3.

Their ways shall be unto them as slippery ways in the darkness: they shall be driven on and fall therein: for I will bring evil upon them. Jer.

xxiii. 12.

Will ye swear falsely; and come and stand before me in this house? I will cast you out of my sight. Jer. vii, 9, 10, 15.

By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood. Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away. Hosea iv. 2, 3.

I will come near to you to judgment; and will be a swift witness against the adulterers, and against false swearers. Mal. iii. 5.

Charity and giving of Alms Threatenings against the Uncommanded.

If thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee, then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger

feeling and Unmerciful.

A reprobate mind, filled with all unrighteousness, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful. They that commit such

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase. Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to-morrow I will give thee; when thou hast it by thee. Prov. iii. 9, 28.

Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Matt. v. 42.

When thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. Luke xiv. 13.

I have showed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts xx. 35.

Now concerning the collection for the poor saints. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God has prospered him. 1 Cor. xvi. 1, 2.

Let us not be weary in welldoing; for in due season we shall reap if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let

things are worthy of death. Rom. i. 28-32.

He that is cruel troubleth his own flesh. He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him! Prov. xi. 17, 26.

He that giveth to the poor shall not lack; but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse. Prov. xxviii. 27.

Whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? John iii. 17.

They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold. Their portion is cursed in the earth. Job xxiv. 7, 18.

They judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless: and the right of the needy do they not judge. Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord. Jer. v. 28, 29.

For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever. Obadiah 10.

He shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy. If a brother or a sister be naked, and destitute of dai
