27 And as Jesus passed on thence, two blind men followed him, crying out, and saying, Have mercy on us, Son of David. 28 And when he had come into the house, the blind men came to him. And Jesus says to them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They say to him, Yea, Lord. 29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it done to you. 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, saying, Take heed, let no one know it. 31 But they went out and spread abroad his fame in all that land. 32 And as they were going out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man, a demoniac. 33 And when the demon was cast out, the dumb man spoke. And the multitudes wondered, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. 34 But the Pharisees said, Through the prince of the demons he casts out the demons. 35 And Jesus went about all the cities and the vil lages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity. 36 And seeing the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed, and scattered, as sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then he says to his disciples, The harvest is great, but the laborers are few. 38 Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth X. laborers into his harvest. And calling to him his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, so as to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every infirmity. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and 3 • Or, in. Matthew the publican; James the son of Alpheus, and Thaddeus; Simon the Cananæan, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent forth, and charged them, saying, Go not into a way of the Gentiles, and into a city of the Samaritans enter not. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. *Heal the sick, braise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. As a gift ye received, as a gift impart. Get not gold, nor silver, nor brass in your girdles; 10 nor bag for the journey, nor two coats, nor sandals, nor staff; for the workman is worthy of his food. "And into whatever city or village ye enter, search out who in it is worthy; and there abide until ye depart. 12 And as ye enter the house, salute it. 13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 And whoever does not receive you, nor hear your words, as ye go forth out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. 15 Verily I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city. 16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; become therefore wary as serpents, and simple as doves. But beware of men; for they will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you; 18 and before governors also and kings will ye be brought for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when ever they deliver you up, be not anxious how or what • Or, delivered him up. Some ancient documents omit raise the dead. • Or, gratuitously. to speak; for it will be given you in that hour what to speak. 20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaks in you. 21 And brother will deliver up brother to death, and father child; and children will rise up against parents, and put them to death. 22 And ye will be hated by all, for my name's sake; but he that endures to the end, this one shall be saved. 23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee into the next; for verily I say to you, ye will not finish the cities of Israel, until the Son of man come. 24 A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his lord. 25 It is enough for the disciple to become as his teacher, and the servant as his lord. If they called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household! 26 Fear them not therefore; for there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hid that will not be known. 27 What I say to you in the darkness, speak ye in the light; and what ye hear in the ear, preach upon the housetops. 28 And be not afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not therefore; ye are of more value than many sparrows. 32 Every one, therefore, who shall confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies me before men, him will I also deny before my Father who is in heaven. 34 Think not that I came to send peace on the earth; I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I came to set a • Gr. cast. man at variance with his father, and a daughter with her mother, and a daughter-in-law with her motherin-law; 36 and a man's foes will be they of his household. 37 He that loves father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me; and he that loves son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me. 38 And he that does not take his cross and follow after me, is not worthy of me. 39 He that finds his life shall lose it; and he that loses his life for my sake shall find it. 4o He that receives you receives me; and he that receives me receives him who sent me. 41 He that receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward; and he that receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward. 42 And whoever gives to drink a cup of cold water only to one of these little ones, in the name of a disciple, verily I say to you, he will not lose his reward. XI. And it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and preach in their cities. *Now John, having heard in the prison the works of the Christ, sent by his disciples, and said to him, Art thou the Coming One, or are we to look for another? And Jesus answering said to them, Go and report to John what ye hear and see. 5 Blind men receive sight and lame walk, lepers are cleansed and deaf hear, and dead are raised, and poor men have good tidings preached to them. And happy is he, whoever finds no occasion of stumbling in me. 7 And as these were going Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind? But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they who wear 8 soft raiment are in kings' houses. But why went ye out? To see a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and much more than a prophet. 10 This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Who will prepare thy way before thee. 11Verily I say to you, among those that are born of women, there has not risen a greater than John the Baptist. But the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and men of violence seize upon it. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if ye are willing to receive him, he is Elijah that was about to come. 15 He that has ears, let him hear. 16 But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places, who calling to their fellows "say, We piped to you, and ye did not dance; we wailed, and ye did not beat the breast. 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon. 19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a glutton and a wine-drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners. And wisdom is justified by her works. 20 Then began he to upbraid the cities in which most of his miracles were done, because they repented not. 21 Woe to thee, Chorazin! Woe to thee, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 Nevertheless I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment, than for you. 23 And thou, Capernaum, shalt thou be exalted to |
