You may therefore reader expect to find in the following pages, that after the foul has been ready to faint under the heavy burden, our Lord has been found a fufficient fupport; and granted fweet communion, with himfelf; Pfal. xxx. 5. weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. This obfervati on is for the encouragement of those who are under fimilar trials; and be it known O believer! whoever thou art, God will deliver thee, Profeffors of godlinefs now walk in their Silver Slippers, entertain their Eyes with the noble buildings, and elegant dreffes, and their Ears with the harmonious voices, and folemn mufic, with which many places of public worship are at tended; without meeting with many frowns, or much difgrace, this with the well tun'd harp of the gospel preacher, induces many to put on the form of godlinefs, when deftitute of the power there, of: unto fuch the experience of the Lord's gracious dealings will be unintelligible, not not having felt the fpirit of God; which as the wind bloweth where it lifteth, they are unacquainted with fa h's walk; efteeming those who live in the life and pow'r of godliness enthusiasts. O heavenly father! who alone can take away the ftony heart and give an heart of flesh, in mercy fend thy powerful, thy efficacious fpirit, to change fuch self deceivers; that there may be caufe to rejoice in that grace which brings thy chofen! to a knowledge of thyfelf. One of this ftamp is always trifling with holy things, but never talles their fweetnefs, David folemnly declares thy word was sweet to my tafte but alas! fuch know nothing of it; therefore, defpife the hungry foul who longs to have a royal feaft; neither have they accefs at a throne of grace: words alone never prevail there, unto these our Lord faith by the mouth of his prophet Isaiah Chap. i. v. 15. when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you yea, when ye make many prayers I will not hear. Fellow mortal have you ever confiderd this matter? how do affairs fland between God God and your foul? Have you been brought to the touchftone? a mistake in this would be awful! how very liable we are to deceive ourselves; confider the fhortness of time! the length of Eternity? This is buta ftate of probation; flee, from the wrath to come. Difciple of Chrift, I congratulate you who have been snatched as a brand from the burning; you love Chrift who has wrought mightily in you to the deftruction of the ftrong holds of fatan; you defire more communion with him. To you a teftimony of our Lord's goodnefs will be acceptable; may he bestow every blessing of the new covenant upon you, and in return, pray for your unworthy fervant, for whether Paul, or Appol los, or Cephas, or the World, or Life or Death, or things prefent, or things to come; all are yours; and ye are Chrift's; and Chrift is God's 1 Cor. iii. 23.
