IN dedicating to your Ladyship the following Extracts, I indulge the impulse of affection and gratitude-and I entreat your patronage for a translation which I should never have ventured to attempt, but through your advice and encouragement. It was, I know, beyond my abilities to do justice to the peculiar elegance and energy of the original; but as the page of Fenelon offers to the afflicted so much valuable instruction and true consolation, I could not but endeavour to fulfil your Ladyship's pious wish of making it more generally useful by
