The Readers will eafily perceive that this Account of Servetus's Performance upon the Bible comes from a Learned Hand. Perhaps I fhall be able in time to communicate to the Publick the Notes which that Phyfician added to Ptolemy's Geography, and which made Calvin fay, that Servetus had called Mofes, vanus præco Judæa, a vain Panegyrist of the Land of Canaan.

ARTICLE LIV.

PARIS.

THE VIIth Letter of the IXth Volume of Edifying and Curious Letters written from the foreign Miffions by fome Miffionaries of the Society of Jefus, runs upon a curious Subject. Father de Bourzez, Author of that Letter, gives an Account of his Obfervations concerning thofe Sparks, that come out of, the Sea upon the run of a Ship. That fort of Light appears much better, when the Moon is under the Horizon, when the Stars are not to be seen, and when the Lanthorn is put out; and therefore it cannot be afcribed to the reflected Light of the Moon, and Stars, or to that of the Ship-Lanthorn. That Light is fometimes faint and weak, and fometimes bright, and fo extenfive, that Father de Bourzez, tho' he stood nine or ten Feet above it, could easily read Capital Letters. Upon fome Days one may eafily difcern the luminous Parts from others. It appears then that the luminous Parts have not all the fame Figure. Some look like Points of Light: Others have the apparent Magnitude of Stars : Some have the Figure of Globules of one or two Lines in Diameter: Others are like Globes of the Bignefs

The run of a Ship is not the only thing that produces fuch a Light: The Fishes leave alfo behind them a Train of Light. Father de Bourzez faw fometime many Fishes make a kind of Fire-work, as they were playing in the Water. A Rope laid a-crofs is fufficient to break the Water, and render it luminous. If the Water, taken from the Sea, be ftirr'd in the dark, it fhoots our many Sparks. When a Spark is formed, it keeps a long time, and if it sticks to fomething that is folid, it lafts feveral Hours. The more the Sea Water is viscous, the more proper it is to become luminous. This Obfervation is fufficient to find out the Caufe of that furprising Phenomenon. Father de Bourzez makes alfo fome Obfervations upon the Sea-rain-bows, and thofe Exhalations that are eafily inflamed.
