2 What though it pierced my fainting heart,

I bless thy hand that caused the smart;
It taught my tears awhile to flow,
But saved me from eternal wo!
3 Oh! hadst thou left me unchastised,
Thy precepts I had still despised,
And still the snare in secret laid
Had my unwary feet betray'd.
4 I love thy chast'nings, O my GOD,
They fix my hopes on thy abode;
Where, in thy presence fully blest,
Thy stricken saints for ever rest.

DAILY

DEVOTION.

11. 3.

HYMN 162.

Daily Dependence.

1 WHEN streaming from the eastern skies,

The morning light salutes mine eyes,
O Sun of Righteousness divine,
On me with beams of mercy shine;
Chase the dark clouds of sin away,
And turn my darkness into day.

2 When to heaven's great and glorious King

My morning sacrifice I bring;
And, mourning o'er my guilt and shame,
Ask mercy, Saviour, in thy name;
My conscience sprinkle with thy blood,
And be my advocate with GOD.
3 As every day thy mercy spares
Will bring its trials and its cares,
O Saviour, till my life shall end,
Be thou my counsellor and friend:
Teach me thy precepts, all divine,
And be thy pure example mine.
4 When pain transfixes every part,
Or languor settles at the heart;
When on my bed, diseased, oppress'd,
I turn, and sigh, and long for rest;
O great Physician! see my grief,
And grant thy servant sweet relief.
5 Should poverty's destructive blow
Lay all my worldly comforts low;
And neither help nor hope appear,
My steps to guide, my heart to cheer;
LORD, pity and supply my need,
For thou, on earth, wast poor indeed.
6 Should Providence profusely pour
Its varied blessings in my store;
O keep me from the ills that wait
On such a seeming prosp'rous state:
From hurtful passions set me free,
And humbly may I walk with thee.
7 When each day's scenes and labors close,
And wearied nature seeks repose,
With pard'ning mercy richly bless'd,
Guard me, my Saviour, while I rest.
And, as each morning sun shall rise,
O lead me onward to the skies.

8 And, at my life's last setting sun, My conflicts o'er, my labors done,

JESUS, thy heavenly radiance shed,
To cheer and bless my dying bed;
And from death's gloom my spirit raise,
To see thy face and sing thy praise.

HYMN 163. L. M.

"I have set God always before me." Pa. xvi. 9 1 SAVIOUR! when night involves the skies,

My soul, adoring, turns to thee!
Thee, self-abased in mortal guise,
And wrapt in shades of death for me.
2 On thee my waking raptures dwell,
When crimson gleams the east adorn,
Thee, victor of the grave and hell,

Thee, source of life's eternal morn.
8 When noon her throne in light arrays,

To thee, my soul triumphant springs; Thee, throned in glory's endless blaze,

Thee, LORD of lords, and King of kings. 4 O'er earth, when shades of evening steal, To death and thee my thoughts I give; To death, whose power I soon must feel, To thee, with whom I trust to live.

HYMN 164. L. M.
Morning Hymn.

1 AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily course of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth, and early rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2 Redeem thy misspent time that's past; Live this day, as if 't were thy last: To improve thy talents take due care; 'Gainst the great day thyself prepare. 3 Let all thy converse be sincere, Thy conscience as the noon-day clear; Think how the all-seeing GOD, thy ways And all thy secret thoughts surveys.

4 Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart, And with the angels bear thy part; Who all night long unwearied sing, "Glory to thee, eternal King."

5 I wake, I wake, ye heavenly choir;
May your devotion me inspire;
That I like you my age may spend,
Like you may on my GOD attend.
6 May I like you in GOD delight,
Have all day long any GOD in sight;
Perform like you my Maker's wiH:
O! may I never more do ill.

7 Glory to thee, who safe hast kept,
And hast refresh'd me whilst I slept:
Grant, LORD, when I from death shall wake,
I may of endless life partake.

8 LORD, I my vows to thee renew;
Scatter my sins as morning dew;
Guard my first spring of thought and will,
And with thyself my spirit fill.

9 Direct, control, suggest this day,
All I design, or do, or say,
That all my powers, with all their might,
In thy sole glory may unite.

Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye angelic host;
Praise FATHER, SON, and HOLY GHOST.

0 Praise GOD, from whom all blessings | 3 Keep our haughty passions bound;
flow,
Save us from our foes around;
Going out and coming in
Keep us safe from every sin.
4 When our work of life is past,
O receive us then at last;
Night and sin will be no more,
When we reach the heavenly shore.

HYMN 165.
Morning,

HYMN 168. L. M.
Evening Hymn.

1 GLORY to thee, my GOD, this night,
For all the blessings of the light:
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Under thine own Almighty wings.

1 ARISE, my soul! with 1apture rise!
And, fill'd with love and fear, adore
The awful Sovereign of the skies,
Whose mercy lends me one day more.
2 And may this day, indulgent Power!
Not idly pass, nor fruitless be;
But may each swiftly flying hour

Still nearer bring my soul to Thee! 3 But can it be? that Power divine

Is throned in light's unbounded blaze; And countless worlds and angels join

To swell the glorious song of praise: 4 And will he deign to lend an ear,

When I, poor abject mortal, pray?
Yes, boundless goodness! he will hear,
Nor cast the meanest wretch away.
5 Then let me serve thee all my days,

And may my zeal with years increase
For pleasant, LORD, are all thy ways,

And all thy paths are paths of peace.
HYMN 166. C. M.
Morning.

1 TO thee let my first off'rings rise,
Whose sun creates the day,
Swift as his gladd'ning influence flies,
And spotless as his ray.

2 This day thy fav ring hand be nigh,
So oft vouchsafed before;
Still nay it lead, protect, supply,
And I that hand adore.

2 Fill our souls with heavenly light,
Banish doubt and clear our sight;
In thy service, LORD, to-day,
May we labor, watch and pray.

·

2 Forgive ine, LORD, for thy dear Son,
The ills that I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

8 Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die, that so I may
Triumphing rise at the last day.
4 O may my soul on thee repose,
And with sweet sleep mine eyelids close
Sleep, that may me more vig'rous make,
To serve my GOD, when I awake.
5 When in the night I sleepless lie,
My soul with heavenly thoughts supply:
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No powers of darkness me molest.
6 Oh! when shall I, in endless day,
For ever chase dark sleep away,
And hymns divine with angels sing,
Glory to thee, eternal King!

7 Praise GOD, from whom all blessings
flow,

Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye angelic host;
Praise FATHER, SON, and HOLY GHOST.

HYMN 169. L. M.

Evening.

GREAT GOD! to thee my evening song
With humble gratitude I raise:
O let thy mercy tune my tongue,
And fill my heart with lively praise.
2 My days unclouded as they pass,

And every onward rolling hour,
Are monuments of wondrous grace,
And witness to thy love and power.
8 And yet this thoughtless, wretched heart,
Too oft regardless of thy love,
Ungrateful, can from thee depart,

And from the path of duty rove.
4 Seal my forgiveness in the blood

Of CHRIST, my Lord; his name alone
I plead for pardon, gracious GOD,

And kind acceptance at thy throne.
5 With hope in him mine eyelids close,
With sleep refresh my feeble frame;
Safe in thy care may I repose,
T

And wake with praises to thy name.

HYMN 175. L. M.

Not ashamed of CHRIST. 1 JESUS! and shall it ever be, A mortal man ashamed of thee! Ashamed of thee, whom angels praise, Whose glories shine through endless days! 2 Ashamed of JESUS! sooner far Let night disown each radiant star; "T is midnight with my soul, till he, Bright morning Star, bid darkness flee. 3 Ashamed of JESUS! O, as soon Let morning blush to own the sun; He sheds the beams of light divine O'er this benighted soul of mine.

To JESUS let us lift our eyes,
Bright pattern of the Christian life.
2 Oh! how benevolent and kind!
How mild, how ready to forgive!
Be this the temper of our mind,
And these the rules by which we live.
3 To do his heavenly Father's will
Was his employment and delight;
Humility and holy zeal
Shone through his life divinely bright.
4 Dispensing good where'er he came,
The labors of his life were love;
Then, if we bear the Saviour's name,
By his example let us move.

HYMN 178. L. M.

Following the Example of CHRIST. 1 WHENE'ER the angry passions rise, And tempt our thoughts or tongues to strife,
