IV. This covenant of grace is frequently fet forth in the fcripture by the name of a teftament, in reference to the death of Jefus Chrift the teftator, and to the everlasting inheritance with all things belonging to it, therein bequeathed h.

This covenant was differently adminiftred in the time of the law, and in the time of the gofpel i: under the law it was adminiftred by promifes, prophecies, facrifices, circumcifion, the Pafchal Lamb, and other types and ordinances delivered to the people of the Jews, all fore-fignifying Chrift to come k, which were for that time fufficient and efficacious, through the opera

VI. Under the gofpel, when Chrift the fubftance n was exhibited, the ordinances in which this covenant is difpenfed are the preaching of the word, and the adminiftration of the facraments of baptifm and the Lord's fupper o, which though fewer in number, and adminiftred with more fimplicity, and lefs out

cumcifion, a feal of the righteoufness of the faith, which he had yet being uncircumcifed; that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcifed; that righteoufnefs might be imputed unto them alfo. Col. ii. II. In whom alfo ye are circumcifed with the circumcifion made without hands, in putting off the body of the fins of the flesh, by the circumcifion of Chrift: v. 12. Buried with him in baptifm, wherein alfo ye are rifen with him, through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raifed him from the dead. I Cor. v. 7. Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Chrift our paffover is facrificed for us.

And were all baptized unto Mofes in the cloud, and in the fea; v. 3. And did all eat the fame fpiritual meat; v. 4. And did all drink the fame fpiritual drink: (for they drank of that fpiritual rock that followed them: and that rock was Chrift.) Heb. xi. 13. Thefe all died in faith, not having received the promifes, but having feen them afar off, and were perfuaded of them, and embraced them, and confeffed that they were ftrangers and pilgrims on the earth. John viii. 56. Your father Abraham rejoiced to fee my day: and he faw it, and was glad.

And the fcripture forefeeing, that God would juftify the heathen through faith, preached before the gofpel unto Abraham, faying, In thee fhall all nations be bleffed. v. 9. So then, they which be of faith are bleffed with faithful Abraham. v. .4. VI. n Col. ii. 17. Which are a fhadow of things to come; but the body is of Chrift.

For I have received of the Lord, that which alfo I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jefus, the fame night in which he was betrayed, took bread: v. 24. And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and faid, Take, eat; this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. v. 25. There are not therefore two covenants of grace differing in fubftance, but one and the fame under various difpenfations f CHAP.

But this fhall be the covenant that I will make with the houfe of Ifrael, after thofe days, faith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts, and will be their God, and they fhall be my people. v. 34. And they fhall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, faying, Know the Lord; for they fhall all know me, from the leaft of them, unto the greatest of them, faith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their fin no more.

CHAP. VIII. Of Chrift the Mediator.

IT T pleafed God, in his eternal purpose, to choofe and ordain the LORD JESUS, his only begotten Son, to be the Mediator between God and man a; the prophet b, prieft c, and king d; the head and Saviour of his church e; the heir of all things f, and judge of the world g: unto whom he did from all

juftify the circumcifion by faith, and uncircumcifion through faith. Pfalm xxxii. 1. Bleffed is he whofe tranfgreffion is forgiven, whofe fin is covered. With Rom. iv. 3. For what faith the fcripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteouf nefs. v. 6. Even as David alfo defcribeth the bleffednefs of the man unto whom God imputeth righteoufness without works. v. 16. Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace, to the end the promise might be fure to all the feed, not to that only which is of the law, but to that alfo which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all. v. 17. (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickneth the dead, and calleth thofe things which be not, as though they were. v. 23. Now it was not written for his fake alone, that it was imputed to him; v. 24. But for ús alfo to whom it fhall be imputed, if we believe on him that raifed up Jefus our Lord from the dead. I. a Ifa. xlii. 1. Behold my fervant whom I uphold, mine elect, in whom my foul delighteth: I have put my fpirit upon him, he fhall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. 1 Pet. i. 19. But with the precious blood of Chrift, as of a lamb without blemish and without fpot: v. 20. Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the

world, but was manifeft in these last times for you. John iii. 16. For God fo loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whofoever be lieveth in him, fhould not perish, but have everlafting life? 1 Tim. ii. 5. For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and man, the man Chrift Jefus.

II. The Son of God the fecond perfon in the Trinity, being very and eternal God, of one fubftance and equal' with the Father, did, when the fulness of time was come, take upon him man's nature k, with all the effential properties and common infirmities thereof, yet without fin : being conceived by the power of the holy Ghoft, in the womb of the Virgin Mary, of her fubftance m. Chrift. This is the true God, and eterternal life. Phil. ii. 6. Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God. Gal. iv. 4. But when the fulness of the time was come, God fent forth his Son made of a woman, made under the law.

/ Heb. ii. 14. Forafmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he alfo himself likewife took part of the fame, that through death he might deftroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil. v. 16. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the feed of Abraham. v. 17. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren; that he might be a merciful and faithful high prieft, in things pertaining to God; to make reconciliation for the fins of the people. Heb. iv. 15. For we have not an high prieft which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without fin.
