lected by a most skilful observer; and the peculiar style and orthography in which the work is written, furnish a very interesting document to illustrate the History of the English Language.

The original Edition of the Chronicles of Holinshed, it is well known, was published by their Author in a mutilated state. A number of pages, which had obviously been printed with the rest of the work, were found to be omitted, except in a few copies, obtained by some favoured persons. In the present Edition, these castrations are faithfully restored; and in order that the Purchaser may depend upon finding an exact, as well as a perfect copy, it has been a law with the Publishers, not to alter a single letter, but to print the Work with the utmost fidelity from the best preceding Edition, with the Author's own Orthography. The only liberty taken, has been to use the types of the present day, instead of the old English letter of the time of Elizabeth.

The Polishers submit to the public this Edition of a curious and valuable Chronicle of our History, with a confident hope, that it will gratify both the Historical Student and the general Reader. If it meet with the reception which they anticipate, they will be encouraged to select some others of the rarest and most important of our ancient Chronicles, and reprint them, in like manner, for the convenience and gratification of the Public.

Bowyer's History of England Lottery.

London, Feb. 20, 1807.

The Public are earnestly requested to peruse the Reasons why

Mr. BOWYER'S HISTORY OF ENG LAND LOTTERY

Could not possibly be drawn sooner, as he is extremely anxious that his Conduct should appear in the clearest Light.

In the month of July last, Mr. BOWYER had made every necessary arrangement, and was determined to draw by the October State Lottery and it is perfectly clear that this was his intention, because his Act of Parliament would expire on the 1st of December, and therefore, if he had wished for any extension of time, the application to Parliament must have been made in the month of February preceding. No such application was made, because no delay was wished; but, when the October Lottery was contracted for, it happened (contrary to the expectation of even the Contractors themselves) that a State Lottery was permitted with only 20,000 Tickets, on which account it became, of course, impossible for Mr. BOWYER to draw his Lottery.

Mr. BOWYER's Act expiring on the 1st of December, it was necessary for him to petition Parliament for a new one, and this was done the very first day of its meeting. Not a single hour has been lost in getting the Act through, and as that has only taken place this day, the 20th of February, it must be sufficiently obvious, that the delay of drawing has not, in the most remote degree, been occasioned by Mr. BOWYER; but, on the contrary, he is ready to verify on

B

oath, if required, that, by the delay, he will Sustain a loss of at least Three Thousand Pounds.

He has it now, however, in his power to assure the Public, that his Lottery is unalterably fixed to be drawn on

TUESDAY, 14th APRIL, 1807:

and, for the complete satisfaction of those who have already, or may intend to purclase Tickets in Mr. BOWYER's Lottery, he deems it necessary to assure them, that he has voluntarily bound himself, in the new Act, to draw by the present State. Lottery, and, of course, that it would be impossible for him to delay it if he wished it: The Act of Parliament may be seen at Mr. BOWYER's Offices in Pall Mall and Cornhill, and at every Lottery Office in London.

Mr. BOWYER entreats those who have not already purchased Tickets will lose no time, as he has really but very few in hand.
