Among the various branches of literature which expand the ideas, cultivate the minds, or improve the morals of mankind, History demands the most exalted rank. It is a subject which concerns every individual, as it furnishes models for our conduct in all the vicissitudes of life, without the hazard and inconvenience of actual experi

ence.

If general History has these advantages, that of our native state must be singularly gratifying, when the narrative proceeds from the pen of an impartial writer, who disclaims the idea of misrepresenting or distorting facts. More particularly at this important juncture, which demands all the ardour and energy of Englishmen to repel the insolence of an arrogant and rapacious foe, the natives of this island, when they contemplate the glorious actions of their intrepid ancestors at Poictiers, Cressy, Agincourt, Blenheim, &c. as recorded in the English History; and recollect the recent achievements of the Navy of Great Britain, will not be terrified with the supercilious vaunts of an imperious boaster; considering themselves as fully competent to hoist the Flag of Defiance to all their enemies.

In a word, every endeavour shall be exerted to render this performance, what we do not hesi tate to pronounce it, a Complete History of England.

*** This History, in one material respect, may justly claim pre-eminence of the productions of other annalists, as it includes the events of the present Reign to the rupture with France in 1803.

In a very early period of this Work will be given the following Embellishments and Illustrations, engraved by the first Artists, from capital Paintings or original Drawings. The Entrance of the French Troops into Amsterdam. The Death of Tippoo Saib, at the Sto ming of Sering patam. Bonaparte dissolving the Council of Elders at St. Cloud.-The Death of General Abercromby, at the Battle of Alexandria. --The Surrender of Harvey and Colclough, who had secreted themselves in a Cave among the Rocks near Wexford, after the Defeat of the Rebels at the Battle of Ross in June 1798.-The Seizing of Lord Edward Fitzgerald by Major Sirr.-Portraits of their present Majesties. This Day is published, by LAURIE and WHitTIE, No. 53, Fleet Street, London, The Traveller's Companion, exhibiting a complete and correct Survey of all the Direct and principal Cross Roads in England, Wales, and Scotland, as far North as Edinburgh and Glasgow. Arranged by Nathaniel Coltman, Surveyor. Beautifully engraved on 27 large Quarto Plates, neatly half bound. Price 11. is. or 11. 5s. in Morocco with a Tuck.

Advertisement.-The principal credit the Author attaches to himself, from the construction of this Work, is the case with which the fraveller may find his way from the Metropolis to any part of the Kingdom (as far North only as Edinbugh and Glasgow), and from one Market Town to another. It must claim a superiority over any Itinerary, from the Roads being kept so connected, that the Traveller may find his way to the most distant part, without the innumerable references which must unavoidably occur in all works of that description: it likewise has a great advantage over a Map of England, by the names of places reading parallel to the sight, whereas all the Southern and South-Western Roads in the General Map read upside down.

The Public may rely on the Roads inserted in this Work being the best, and those usually travelled (though not always Turnpike Roads), from the Metropolis to every City, Market Town, Manufacturing Town, and Sea-port in the King

dom. The Direct Roads from London are shewn by Plain Lines; and particular care has been taken to select those Cross Roads from one Market Town or Village to another, which may be travelled with safety at any season of the year; and, for the sake of distinction, they are expressed by dotted Lines, whether Turnpike or Bye Roads, as will be seen by a reference to the Explanation Plate. The figures in the Index refer to the paging of the Maps.

The Rivers, and the whole of the navigable Canals for which Acts of Parliament have passed) which intersect the Roads, are inserted to gratify the curiosity of the Traveller; but, as it is impossible to obtain an accurate knowledge of the intended course of such as are not yet completed, any information from Gentlemen Tourists, or Surveyors concerned in such Works, will much oblige the Publishers.
