Money that Haman had promifed to pay the King's Treafuries for the Jews to deftroy them.

8 Alfo he gave him the Copy of the Decree that was given to destroy them, to fhew it unto Efther, and to charge her that the fhould go in unto the King, to make Supplication unto him, and to make Request before him for her People.

9 Then Hatach came and told Efther the Words of Mordecai.

10 Again Efther fpake unto Hatach, and gave him Commandment unto Mordecai.

11 All the People of the King's Provinces do know, that whofoever Man or Woman, fhall come unto the King into the inner Court, who is not called, there is one Law of his to put him to Death, except fuch to whom the King fhall hold out the golden Sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the King, these thirty Days.

12 And they told Mordecai Efther's Words.

13 Then Mordecai commanded to answer Efther, Think not with thy felf that thou fhalt escape in the King's House more than all the Jews.

14 For if thou altogether holdeft thy Peace at this Time, then fhall there Enlargement and Deliverance arife to the Jews from another Place, but thou and thy Father's House: fhall be deftroyed: and who knoweth, whether thou art come to the Kingdom for fuch a Time as this?

15 Then Efther bad them return Mordecai this Answer.

16 Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shufhan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three Days, Night nor Day: I alfo and my Maidens will faft likewife, and fo will I go in unto the King, which is not according to the Law; and if I perish, I perish.

*Note, it is evident, that many of the Pfalms have a Relation to the State of the Jewish and Chriftian Church, in their several Captivities, and Perfecutions under the Pagan and Christian Empires.

It may be prefum'd that this excellent Princess was animated to so hazardous an Undertaking, by reading and meditating upon the 27th Pfalm, in which are many Expreffions, which seem to refer to the great Affliction the Jews were under at this Time, The Decree being for the Destruction of Man, Woman, and Child. Their Deliverance by the Divine Providence was so very wonderful, that the Jews have in all Ages fince, and do to this Time celebrate both the Fast and Feaf, which they call Purim.

17 So Mordecai went his Way, and did according to all that Efther had commanded him.

CHAP. V.

Efther adventuring on the King's Favour, obtaineth the Grace of the golden Sceptre; and inviteth the King and Haman to a Banquet. 6 She being encouraged by the King in her Suit, inviteth them to another Banquet the next Day. Haman proud of his Advancement, repineth at the Contempt of Mordecai. 14 By the Counsel of his Wife, he buildeth for him a Gallows.

Now

OW it came to pass on the third Day, that Efther put on the Royal Apparel, and stood in the inner Court of the King's Houfe: and the King fat upon his Royal Throne.

2 And it was fo when the King faw Efther the Queen standing in the Court, that the obtained Favour in his Sight: and the King held out to Efther the golden Sceptre that was in his Hand: fo Efther drew near, and touched the Top of the Sceptre.

3 Then faid the King unto her, What wilt thou, Queen Efther? and what is thy Requeft? it shall be given thee, to the half of the Kingdom.

4 And Efther anfwered, If it feem good unto the King, let the King and Haman come this Day unto the Banquet that I have prepared for him.

5 Then the King faid, Caufe Haman to make Hafte, that he may do as Efther hath faid. So the King and Haman came to the Banquet.

6 And the King faid unto Efther at the Banquet, What is thy Petition? and it fhall be granted thee: and what is thy Request? even to the half of the Kingdom.

7 Then anfwered Efther, and faid, My Petition, and my Request is;

8 If I have found Favour in the Sight of the King, and if it please the King to grant my Petition, and to perform my Requeft, let the King and Haman come to the Banquet that I fhall provide for them, and I will do to Morrow as the King hath faid.

9 Then went Haman forth that Day, joyful, and with a glad Heart: but when he faw Mordecai in the King's Gate,

10 Nevertheless, Haman refrained himself, and when he came Home, he fent and called for his Friends, and Zerefh his Wife.

11 And Haman told them of the Glory of his Riches, and the Multitude of his Children, and all the Things wherein the King had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the Princes and Servants of the King. 12 Haman faid moreover, Yea, Efther the Queen did let no Man come in with the King unto the Banquet that fhe had prepared, but my felf; and to Morrow am I invited unto her alfo with the King.
