GOD of Ifrael liveth, before whom I ftand, there fhall not be Dew nor Rain thefe Years, but according to my Word. 2 And the Word of the LORD came unto him, saying, 3 Get thee hence, and turn thee Eastward, and hide thyfelf by the Brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.

4 And it fhall be, that thou fhalt drink of the Brook, and I have commanded the Ravens to feed thee there.

5 So he went, and did according unto the Word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the Brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.

6 And the Ravens brought him Bread and Flesh in the Morning, and Bread and Flesh in the Evening, and he drank of the Brook.

7 And it came to pafs after a while, that the Brook dried up, because there had been no Rain in the Land. 8 And the Word of the LORD came unto him, faying,

9 Arife, and get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a Widow-woman there to fuftain thee.

* Luke iv. 25 But I tell you of a Truth, many WIDOWs were in Ifrael in the Days of Elias, when the Heaven was shut up three Years and fix Months, when great FAMINE was throughout all the Land.

26 But unto none of them was Elias fent, fave unto Sarepta, a City of Sidon, unto a Woman that was a WIDOW.

10 So he arofe, and went to Zarephath: and when he came to the Gate of the City, behold, the Widow-woman was there gathering of Sticks: and he called to her, and faid, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little Water in a Veffel, that I may drink.

11 And as fhe was going to fetch it, he called to her, and faid, Bring me, I pray thee, a morfel of Bread in thine Hand.

12 And the faid, As the LORD thy GOD liveth, I have not a Cake, but an handful of Meal in a Barrel, and a little Oil in a Crufe: and behold, I am gathering two Sticks, that I may go in, and drefs it for me and my Son, that we may eat it, and die.

13 And Elijah faid unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou haft faid but make me thereof a little Cake firft, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy Son.

14 For thus faith the LORD GOD of Ifrael, The Barrel of Meal fhall not wafte, neither fhall the Crufe of Oil fail until the Day that the LORD fendeth Rain upon the Earth.

15 And he went, and did according to the Saying of Elijah and fhe, and he, and her Houfe did eat many Days.

16 And the Barrel of Meal wafted not, neither did the Crufe of Oil fail, according to the Word of the LORD which he fpake by Elijah.

18 And fhe faid unto Elijah, What haye I to do with. thee, O thou Man of GOD? art thou come unto me to call my Sin to remembrance, and to flay my Son?

CHA P. XVIII.

1 In the Extremities of Famine, Elijah being fent to Ahab, meeteth good Obadiah. 9 Obadiah bringeth Ahab to Elijah. 17 Elijah reproving Ahab: 41 By Fire from Heaven convinceth Baal's Prophets; by Prayer obtaineth Rain; followeth Ahab to Jezreel.

Ver. 1
ND it came to pafs after many Days, that the
Word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third
Year, faying, Go, fhew thy felf unto Ahab; and I will fend
Rain upon the Earth.

2 And Elijah went to fhew himself unto Ahab: and there was a fore Famine in Samaria.

3 And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the Governour of his House: (now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:

4 For it was fo when Jezebel cut off the Prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred Prophets, and hid them by fifty in a Cave, and fed them with Bread and Water:)

5 And Ahab faid unto Obadiah, Go into the Land unto all Fountains of Water, and unto all Brooks: peradventure we may find Grafs to fave the Horfes and Mules alive, that we leefe not all the Beasts.

6 So they divided the Land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one Way by himself, and Obadiah went another Way by himself.

7 And as Obadiah was in the Way, behold, Elijah met him and he knew him, and fell on his Face, and faid, Art thou that my Lord Elijah?

8 And he answered him, I am go tell thy Lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

9 And he said, What have I finned, that thou wouldst deliver thy Servant into the Hand of Ahab, to flay me?

10 As the LORD thy GOD liveth, there is no Nation nor Kingdom, whither my Lord hath not fent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an Oath of the Kingdom and Nation, that they found thee not.

II And now thou fayeft, Go tell thy LORD, Behold, Elijah is here.

12 And it fhall come to pafs, as foon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD fhall carry thee whither I know not; and fo when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he fhall flay me: but I thy Servant fear the LORD from my Youth.

13 Was it not told my Lord, what I did when Jezebel flew the Prophets of the LORD? how I hid an hundred Men of the LORD's Prophets by fifty in a Cave, and fed them with Bread and Water?

14 And now thou fayeft, Go tell thy LORD, Behold, Elijah is here and he shall flay me.

15 And Elijah faid, As the LORD of Hofts liveth, before whom I ftand, I will furely fhew myfelf unto him To-day. 16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

:

17 And it came to pafs, when Ahab faw Elijah, that Ahab faid unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Ifrael?

18 And he answered, I have not troubled Ifrael, but thou and thy Father's House, in that ye have forfaken the Commandments of the LORD, and thou haft followed Baalim.

19 Now therefore fend, and gather to me all Ifrael unto Mount Carmel, and the Prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the Prophets of the Groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's Table.

20 So Ahab fent unto all the Children of Ifrael, and gathered the Prophets together unto Mount Carmel.

21 And Elijah came unto all the People, and faid, How long halt ye between two Opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him but if Baal, then follow him. And the People

answered him not a Word.

22 Then faid Elijah unto the People, I, even I only remain a Prophet of the LORD; but Baal's Prophets are four hundred and fifty Men.

23 Let them therefore give us two Bullocks, and let them chufe one Bullock for themfelves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on Wood, and put no Fire under and I will drefs the other Bullock, and lay it on Wood, and put no Fire under:

24 And call ye on the Name of your Gods, and I will call on the Name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by Fire, let him be God. And all the People anfwered and faid, It is well spoken.

25 And Elijah faid unto the Prophets of Baal, Chuse you one Bullock for yourselves, and drefs it firft, for ye are many and call on the Name of your Gods, but put no Fire under.

26 And they took the Bullock which was given them, and they dreffed it, and called on the Name of Baal from Morning even until Noon, faying, O Baal, hear us: but there was no Voice, nor any that answered: And they leapt upon the Altar which was made

27 And it came to pass at Noon, that Elijah MOCKED them, and faid, Cry aloud for he is a God, either he is talking, or he is purfuing, or he is in a Journey, or peradventure he fleepeth, and must be awaked.

28 And they cried aloud, and cut themfelves after their

manner with Knives and Lancets, till the Blood gushed out upon them.

29 And it came to pass when Mid-day was paft, and they prophefied until the time of the Offering of the Evening Sacrifice; that there was neither Voice, nor any to anfwer, nor any that regarded.

[blocks in formation]

30 And ELIJAH faid unto all the People, Come near unto me. And all the People came near unto him. And he repaired the Altar of the LORD that was broken down.

31 And ELIJAH took twelve Stones, according to the Number of the Tribes of the Sons of Jacob, unto whom the Word of the LORD came, faying, ISRAEL fhall be thy Name.

32 And with the Stones he built an Altar in the Name of the LORD, and he made a Trench about the Altar, as great as would contain two Measures of Seed.

33 And he put the Wood in order, and cut the Bullock in pieces, and laid him on the Wood, and faid, Fill four Barrels with Water, and pour it on the Burnt-facrifice, and on the Wood.

34 And he faid, Do it the fecond time. And they did it the fecond time. And he faid, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

35 And the Water ran round about the Altar, and he filled the Trench alfo with Water.

36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the Evening-facrifice, that Elijah the Prophet came near, and faid, LORD GOD of Abraham, Ifaac, and of Ifrael, let it be known this Day, that thou art Gop in Ifrael, and that I
