JOHN, Xviii. 38. Pilate saith unto him-What is truth? THIS question of the Roman governor has been repeated in our own day, in a manner which would seem to imply that there is no definite standard of truth, nor means of ascertaining it. Yet, surely, whatever excuse may be made for the heathen, who had not the means of ascertaining that standard, none can be alleged for those who possess, but neglect to improve, the advantage of divine revelation. Pilate spoke to One who was both able and willing to afford him satisfaction, and we know not why he neglected to improve the opportunity. Perhaps the impatience of the Jewish rulers, who clamoured for the instant condemnation of Jesus, abruptly terminated the conversation. But we are in very different circumstances; and nothing need prevent us from ascertaining what truth is, and where it is to be found. It may be feared that too many turn away, like Pilate, instead of devoutly waiting for an answer; because they have no sincere love for truth. When that love has really gained possession of the heart, it is not a dread of labour, nor any slight impediment, that will |
